Super Bowl is over - time for a mock draft
But I'll try and keep this short.
I've looked at the Broncos current roster and the ages of those included and think we need to consider this in making choices, especially at DT and CB and the need for back up and support in other areas - a RG to challenge Kuper (who could play across the line), A RB to complement McGahee who could push Moreno back to 3rd choice, a FB and a 2nd/3rd choice QB to compete with Webber as the back up to Tebow.
So here is who I would like us to recruit, I look forward to your response and criticism :-)
25 - Jerel Worthy - DT - 6'3" - 310
57 - Chris Polk - RB - 5'11 - 224
88 - Trumaine Johnson - CB - 6'2" - 204
120 - Kheeston Randal - DT - 6'5" - 305
129 - Lucas Nix - RG - 6'5" - 310
152 - Evan Rodriguez - FB - 6"2" - 242
216 - BJ Coleman - QB - 6'3" - 234

yep
Beadles needs challenged, not Kupe.
"If you went to the Fair with this guy and you played that game where you have to throw the ball through the hole..... he may never get it through the hole, but he's still gonna be walking away with all the stuffed animals!" Prime's commentary on our very own Tim Tebow!!!

"If I had to choose between an abundance of football intelligence, or football wisdom, I'd choose wisdom every single time...... John Fox has enough football wisdom to be carried in a dump truck." Me!
When Kuper (the oldest of our offensive Line) was injured I don't think
we had sufficient cover, hence my suggestion of someone who could play across the line and I think Lucas Nix ticks the boxes and would be a good long term replacement.

I will never support drafting a FB.

but not as a FB. I would draft a lot of players in hindsight.

Agree. Never draft a FB. Waste of a pick...
I think thats too early for Worthy. Would rather have Still, Brockers, or Cox before Worthy if you are set on drafting a DT in the first round.
I also hope Polk is available there but I just dont see it happening. I think he has good straight line speed so he’ll probably run well in his 40. And with a small class of top RBs Polk will go sooner rather than later.

there were 5 FBs taken in the draft in 2011
not that I am suggesting we do so

Well then 5 out of 32 teams thought it necessary. I personally don't and neither do 27 teams out there.
I know “never” is too specific of a term but I think you can find and develop a FB rather than have to draft one. Just my opinion.

When we're a run first team, a tough run blocking FB is a need.
Sure not many teams will draft a FB, because there’s alot of pass happy teams out there. But teams that run the ball alot, like the texans, titans, Ravens, Steelers, Jets, Jags, Niners, Falcons, Cardinals, and Browns have all either drafted a FB recently or paid decent money to sign a FA FB.
We’re going to be a run heavy team, so drafting a thumper to lead the way should be a priority.
I still think you can find a tough run blocking FB in FA or as a UDFA. I'd prefer to use that method than draft one personally..

I'd rather draft one, it would be cheaper
you can get a UDFA at FB. But if a tough run FB is there in the late rounds, id take him
Not too bad.
Worthy would be nice to get. However, to counter balance that, I would get Curry in the second. With Rio now, I can see him wanting a big and bad DT in the middle. When the jags defense was at its best, they had two huge DTs in the middle. Worthy would be like a poor man’s John Henderson. I only say that because Henderson is 6’7.
I think if the broncos go: Worthy, Curry, and Johnson in the first three rounds, the bronco’s defense will be good for a long time. Match Worthy up with Bunkley/Thomas and Curry with Ayers/Dumervil/Miller. Add Dan Connor in free agency and the broncos have one of the better front 7’s in the AFC. At that point, all Moore would have to do, is be an average Safety—hopefully he can do that much at least.

Some have said Jerel Worthy is lazy and does just enough to get by, some say he feels like he is entitled, some say he is 'worthy' of a first rd pick...
The NFL advisory committee said Worthy would be a “very high draft choice,” said Spartans coach Mark Dantonio, who followed up with calls to specific general managers and coaches to gauge what Worthy could expect.
Now that Worthy has made his choice, Dantonio is sad and happy at the same time.
“We wish him the best,” Dantonio said. “We will miss him tremendously. We’ll miss his smile around the building. We’ll miss his work ethic. We’ll miss his opportunities to lead as a senior. We’ll miss his play on the field.”
Whatever people say about him, Jerel Worthy will get his chance at the Combines in a few weeks to explain these questions and others before teams make their decision with him…

unless it is just Dantonio trying to bolster Worthy's draft position
his coach just said that [Worthy’s] work ethic would be missed. That doesn’t jive with a lazy player so either Worthy has changed since that lazy tag was slapped on him or Dantonio is doing his best used car salesman job on the NFL.

My feeling about as well, selling the player. I tried to find more on him, but not much to find other than his dad had a stroke and he wants to help his family...

Hasnt he been labelled lazy because that is what people perceive him to be because he might not have a great motor and that he sometimes goes missing. Granted this is often an indication of poor gym work but some people can be hard workers but just never develop that conditioning or motor to compete at the highest level.

I'd take Martin or Wilson over him if they're available. Even Pead or Pierce would be better options
Polk interviewed poorly and just looked slow and lacked explosiveness. I know speed isnt apart of his game, but id expect a 2nd round pick to have sort of explosion to hit the holes.
Will be interesting to see him at the Combine.
Yeah that would be my choice too, but at 57 I don't think they will be there...Polk will.

Instead of Randle at 120...
select Akeim Hicks there. He is 6’4" 325, former LSU recruit and very raw but let him spend a year on PS and a year rotating as a backup and he ought to be AWESOME!
Kansas Bob
I'm not sure if playing the last two seasons in Canada has helped his cause
- looks an interesting prospect tho!

gotta agree with kansas bob
I would rather have the upside of Akiem Hicks to develop into great player .One other thought at that slot would be D Tackle out of Baylor Nicolas Jean Baptiste 6’2’’ 335 lbs. to plug the middle and stop the run. I have seen him get after the QB on occasion this year .

Not a huge fan of this draft
I’d pick Cox, Poe, Thompson and even Reyes over Worthy at the moment. Like BF2B mentioned prior, people question his effort. So the combine will be important for him.
Polk i would have off my board. We need a back who can be explosive. McGahee is the power guy, a guy like Lamar Miller, Doug Martin, David Wilson, LaMichael James, Pead all seem to be better options then polk
I like the Johnson pick.
I don’t know much about Randall, but the scouting report on him sounds promising.
I’d love to get Chad Diehl, FB out of Clemson in the 5th. Guy is exactly what our run game needs.
Scouting Report on him:
Strengths: Has a stout physique and excels at blocking. Accelerates off the snap, stays low, bends knees, sinks hips, punches well, and almost always hits the mark. Has good power and will drive defenders back. Has a comfortable set in pass protection and knows how to use hands effectively.
I doubt Coleman lasts to the 7th.
I agree Worthy is risky
I saw him play a couple times and he had moments where he looked like N. Suh without the personal fouls, and times where he looked like A. Haynesworth (post big $$ contract). However, he is big, strong and very athletic for his size (sound like any Pats Dlineman that is awesome?). For me as a fan, the whole thing is a crap shoot – but when you look at the names: Worthy, Thompson, Reyes, Still, Poe and Cox it looks like 2 or 3 of those names will be on the board for our #1. The trick is rolling it right :)
I can't see why people are taking Chris Polk off their boards just because he had a bad week at SeniorBowl practice.
The guy has done nothing but improve his production every year and rushing for 1488 yds, 5.1 ypc and 12 TDs in 2011. He also ran for 147 yards, 4.9 ypc and 1 TD in the 65-56 shoot out against Baylor at the Alamo Bowl. For a guy who rushed for 5 yards per carry average throughout his career, I think I have a pretty high regard for as a powerback. One who could play behind McGahee for a year and take over. Knowshon can’t be depended on and we don’t know what Fannin or Omon brings yet. As for Ball and Johnson, I would keep Johnson and let him fight it out in TC or go to the PC…

I think people are concerned
b/c he struggled under a nfl coaching staff doing nfl type stuff. Traditionally, RB has been the position that college players can adapt to the pro game the quickest, so if his first forray into an nfl environment goes bad, talking heads will freak. If he looks good at the combine he will probably go in first tow rounds, and I hope we stear clear. Something about that guy says BUST to me. I’d prefer a couple FA backs.
I don't have a problem taking Worthy.
He went against one of the best o-lines every year he started—the Wisconsin Badgers btw. To me he is more tested against what he’ll see in the pros. When he can have success against them, then I have confidence he’ll have success in the NFL. Also from what I saw in the badger games, he showed up to play. He was always a force.

That's what I want to see...
I wish I could have seen how Still, Worthy and Mike Martin did against Wisconsin the last two years.
And I wish I could’ve seen how DaJohn Harris did against DeCastro.

Still....
Was a complete non-factor in this season’s game V.S. Wisconsin.
The Badgers rarely needed to double him as Kevin Zeitler completely took Still out of the game.
True.
In the biggest game of the year, Still lays down a big one. I thought Worthy did a better job in both games against the badgers.. He was more of load to handle. Still is more athletic, but Worthy requires a double team just about everytime.

I just don’t understand why he so highly thought of. Odd.

Worthy...
Plays well in stretches.. not so well in others. Space-eater regardless. Still is more athletic.
Small class of top tier DTs will naturally pull up the stock of the DTs. Supply and demand.
I think this would be a good haul
Assuming of course Worthy shows up, works hard and becomes a starter by the end of year 1 and can give us the pocket push we need. I know Scotty won’t like this [:)] but I would ask for a do over on round 2. We take Vontaze there, and we pick up a FA back. Heck we pick up 2 FA backs. A couple mid tier guys who are ready to make the ascent to starter caliber (ie. Tolbert and Tashard Choice (4.5 in 40) or Jackie Battle (4.4 in 40) – power runner with catching ability and a speed guy).
That would make me happy!!
Nice
Nice Mock but i don’t think Trumaine Johnson falls to the Third i think he slips in the second.
I agree with your positional priorities.
Maybe replace the second DT with an ILB to compete with Nate Irving/Joe Mays.
Also, I’m with BroncoMath on drafting a FB. I think this seems like a very low priority for us. Serviceable FBs are a dime a dozen. I think there are 18 draft-eligible FBs on CBS’s board. 16 of them will probably be available as UFAs.
I’d rather get a WR. I favor Marvin Jones.
And I agree with Scotty: B.J. Coleman will likely be gone before the 7th. But I like where your mind is at.
Also, I have to get this in: Chris Polk sucks. As deep as I’ve driven my stake into the ground about Chris Polk, if he ends up being the next Terrell Davis, I may as well ban myself. If anyone wants to buy a “Chris Polk Sucks” bumper sticker, you can find them for sale at “ChrisPolkSucks.com.” All proceeds benefit Agent Jerry Fletcher Charities.

One more thing...
Trumaine Johnson might not last until the third – I think there will be a huge run on CBs in the second.
If that’s the case, Coty Sensabaugh, a kid who’s really flown under the radar until recently, might be available. He’s gone from undrafted to being discussed as a future starter in the NFL. Some draftniks have him going after the third.
Here are some quotes (all from the same observer):
-Coty Sensabaugh (Clemson) equally impressed but for different reasons. Not as effective in press coverage, Sensabaugh missed his jam multiple times in 1 on 1 matchups but had the speed to recover consistently and still make a play on the ball. Recovery speed was the most impressive facet of Sensabaugh’s play today. Savvy corner when giving cushion, displaying a high football IQ and ability to decipher opposing routes; multiple times, Sensabaugh beat the receiver to the route. Displays great feel up close and backed off the line of scrimmage, and looks like one of the more NFL ready corners here in Arkansas.
Coty Sensabaugh looked every bit as good, if not better than [Jeremy] Lane this week. Extremely vocal, recognizes route combos, communicates pre snap information with teammates, and just comes across as a natural leader in the secondary. Has plus football intelligence, and has the long speed to last on the outside in the NFL. Coty Sensabaugh looks primed to be a future starter and instant contributor at the NFL level.
I first became aware of this kid when I was trying to differentiate some of this class’ receivers.
He might be a good option. Good size, “plus” speed. The talk on SB’s Clemson site is that he really came into his own as the season progressed. Maybe the switch finally flipped with this kid.

However I guess the whole defense did with the score of that Bowl game.
That Bowl game was the definition of giving up.

by Agent Jerry Fletcher on Feb 7, 2012 8:03 PM MST up reply actions
I could understand how you'd think that.
And I worried about that too. But Sensabaugh was one of the few (probably the only) Tigers who didn’t shit the bed in that game.
I’m not going to claim that when I watched that I game I was focusing on Coty. At that point, I wasn’t even aware of him.
But when I first became aware of him, I wondered how he performed in that game. I went out to the Clemson SB fan site and searched for references to him. All of them were positive, saying he was the only Tiger who played with any pride at all. The main thread was titled “Orange Bloodbath.” For some reason, it’s gone now. But here’s the only quote I could find:
The offense sensed this after ‘the fumble’, and collapsed mentally. The defense was lost all game (save Sensabaugh…kid uses every ounce of talent he was given every single play). This is the behavior of a young team and inexperienced coaching staff.
I’d love to know more about him. I saw he got a Combine invite, so at least we’ll learn more about his measureables there. The good folks over at the Clemson site claim he can run with anyone.

Good stuff Jerry
That was a orange bloodbath I hope for their sake that their new D.C. Brent Venables works out for them . Although a lot of Sooner fans weren’t that sorry to see him leave and glad to have Mike Stoops back running the Defense .
I like the mock
and for the people saying that a FB would be a wasted pick obviously did not watch Hynoski in the Super Bowl. That guy was blowing up huge holes.
