Giants 12 men on the field near the end of game intentional?
Late in the game Pats had to score a td and Brady took the snap Giants dropped all but the DL back in coverage Brady looked around and scrambled around for a quite a while before throwing an incomplete pass but there was a flag on the play. Giants had 12 men on the field. Did anyone think that the Giants put 12 men on the field intentionally to add another man in coverage. Sure the Giants were penalized for it but it made Brady run more time off the clock and made it harder to find someone open. I think 12 men on the field was intentional and I thought it was a shrewd move.

Hadn't thought about that....
but if it was it was a very smart move! I discussed with someone I was watching the game with and the fact they don’t get the time back and they said that the Giants should just keep 12 men on the field. Something that should be addressed via the rules committee this offseason. Unfair advantage.
Kyle Orton Sucks…except for practice
I wondered at the time
Why it took so long to call it. Don’t they do a head count?

if they did, it was genius. not just for thinking it through but for doing it in a panicky time crunch. i’d be wasting valuable time going all OCD (is it a five yard penalty? replay the down? do they get time back? repeat). i’d bet it was a happy accident for them, due to the pace of the game and trying to get the right personnel in place.
do NFL teams have rules experts in the booth? i mean, i know that all staff should understand the rules and all, but things like that makes me think i’d want an ex-ref or someone who can recite the rulebook backwards if needed.

Maybe not...
What if there was a turnover that would have been nullified by 12 men on the field? I don’t think 12 men on the field is a smart move in that case. The half does not end on a defensive penalty so the offensive team is actually in a pretty decent position.
Or they might have just messed up.
I’ve noticed that a lot of sports fans/analysts have a tendancy to over analyze everything. I think they just got caught with 12 guys on the field, they got penalized for it, and as it sometimes happens, being penalized worked out in their favor.
I can't even believe this is a topic
I read this and left it alone. NO it was not intentional. Seeing a flag gives QB’s more confidence in throwing the deep ball because they know it’s a free play and the clock would stop. Wipe off any turnovers and a better chance at a long play or pass interference. I’m saddened that people actually agree that this was intentional. I wonder why they didn’t leave 12 men on the field the very next play…….hmm
Von Miller and Dumervil are basically racing to see who's first to the QB...Love this feeling!!!
Really? You're saddened!! Calm down, bro. There is not a lot of other things to talk about in the offseason!
The real question is why did the refs take so long to make the call? We all have seen refs blow the whistle because the offense broke the huddle with 12 men. This should be a pre-snap penalty and if the refs can’t call this before the play begins then they should put the time back on the clock.
Your making something out of nothing
It wasn’t a shrewd move or anything like that. If you were watching the game, the replay clearly showed 12th man headed to the sideline, just not fast enough. That 12th man did not make Brady run around and use up more clock. What it did was stop the clock after the play was over. What if that penalty gave NE the chance it needed to score winning TD?

not sure if it was intentional, and i had never thought about it before
But I definitely considered how helpful it was and that it might be a good strategy when they called it. You could rush an extra man and still drop 8 in coverage, or drop 9 in coverage with a 3man rush. That extra guy is a big advantage and the 5 yds is pretty meaningless.
Go-Go Gadget Tebow!!!!
This is bigger than you think. Has anyone else noticed the increase in 12 men on the field penalties??
Its not a coincidence. There are a lot more sub-packages with guys rotating, and sometimes teams get away with have more guys out there.
I thought if you declined the penalty it was a dead ball foul
meaning a free play. Is this right
Winning
I thought of this as well and it was a shrewd move. Brady takes a look downfield more likely to throw a pass that won’t get caught and it made it very difficult to complete a pass against 12 guys. In the future why wouldn’t a team commit this penalty, it’s brilliant at the end of the game. I think they should make a rule that if this occurs by the defense in the last minute of a game the time should be reset on the clock.
If they don't change it for the whole game
then don’t change it at all. It just sucks if it happens to you.
Whatcha gonna do, brother, when the Broncos run wild on you!
