I was really hoping that the Broncos where going to be very active in this years free agency because they badly need to upgrade their offense with some plamakers and some recievers for whoever their Q.B. is going to be in 2012. I mean if they where really serious about winning the interest of Peyton Manning, they might want to quit flying him around on private jets, and wooing him with romantic tweets about his throwing ability, and start showing him they are willing to fork over the cash neccesary to bring in some top notch playmakers in free agency for him to work with.
According to most of the sources I have researched the Broncos are in good position as far as cap space, to make some major splashes in this years free agency. I dont think anybody would argue that the Broncos are lacking firepower on offense, and could definetly use an upgrade for the recieving corps after letting go of Eddie Royal, as well as letting go of their best reciever and one of the best recievers in the league in Brandon Lloyd midseason last year, all for a whopping 6th round draft pick. Way to go on that one! So while most of the big fish have already been picked up at this point, there is still one reciever left that could be very exciting, Mike Wallace of the Pittsburg Steelers. Now Im sure its going to take some major chips to get him to come to Denver, but he is one of the premier recievers in the league, he has improved his stats every year since he came into the leauge, and is one of the best game breaking recievers in the NFL period. The last 2 years he has averaged over 1k yards recieving to go along with averaging about 10 touchdowns a season. Now if you want offensive fire power, this guys a flamethrower.
Not to mention Mike Wallace is a burner and he is the biggest threat catching the deep ball, which just so happens to be the ball the Broncos current Q.B. Tim Tebow throws the best. Think back to all of those passes that Tebow aired out to Eric Decker that he just didnt quite have the speed to get under. Wont have that problem with Wallace, he will burn past defenders and run down the field like an olympic sprinter. Pick up Mike Wallace, and then the Broncos front office would be making a statement, yes we do want to be contenders. Now I know Im probably dreaming to think that the Broncos top brass would ever make a serious move like that to bring an offensive threat in of that caliber, that might actually improve their passing game, which would in turn help the running game, as well as ensure Demaryius Thomas will have plenty of oppurtunites in single coverage, because of the double coverage defenses would be affording Mike Wallace. But hey I can dream cant I.
Well quite a step down from Mike Wallace, but somebody who would still be an upgrade to the current roster is Visanthe Shiancoe. He may never put up the 11 TDs he did with the Vikings in 09 again, but he averages about 500yds recieving a season, and is at least a solid target for Tebow, or whoever to look for near the redzone. But I wouldnt get him unless he could be had for a very reasonable value but given he is nearing the end of his career he may be willing to sign for a bargain price. Then the last guy I see left available in free agency who could be a valuable commodity to Denver is former Chargers RB Mike Tolbert, an underated player that can probably be acquired at a good value. As much as Ryan Matthews was hurt last season Mike Tolbert filled in and didnt miss a beat. He catches the ball well out of the backfield, he is a great blocker, and he runs low to the ground and is hard to tackle, but is deceptively elusive in open field. He would definitely be a guy I would keep my eye on if i where Denver.
Running the ball was the Broncos bread and butter last year, so adding a guy like Tolbert who is a durbable, hard nosed, every down kind of back would be a great addiction. Fingers crossed Willis Magahee will have another great season like he did last year, but even so it would be better if he had somebody to share the load with like Tolbert, and somebody who could also be a great diversion in short yardage plays where teams would alway expect for Tebow to pound it in, instead Tolbert could pick up some of that dirty work, as well as play a great decoy on bootleg plays. I really hope Knowshown Moreno is able to come back from his knee injury at some point, and stop getting in trouble with the law, because he really shows flashes of brilliance sometimes and he would be a great duo with Magahee hitting on all cylinders again.
But so far, it isnt looking like the Broncos are going to make any major moves, aside from thowing everything but the kitchen sink at Peyton Manning, who is all but already signed with the Tennesse Titans. Who by the way not only offered him the keys to the offense, but they offered the guy part ownership of the team when he retires! Now thats throwing the kitchen sink. Now Im sure if it were possible John Elway would offer Peyton, Tebows parking space and even offer to trade him to the Alaskan Malamukes if it would win him over but it looks like this thing is all sewn up. So I guess the best we can hope for now, is that the Broncos continue to make good moves in the NFL Draft as they have been in the past few years. Picking up studs like Demaryius Thomas, Von Miller, and a guy who most call a stud but Elway calls a dud Timmy Tebow. So heres to a good 2012 NFl draft for the Denver Broncos!
