Let me start by saying that I was as excited for this year's draft than I have been in a long while. Despite the overwhelming opinion on MHR, I am still pretty pleased. While many will disagree, I saw nothing wrong with their selections, regardless of reach/value. The Broncos knew who they wanted, and they got them.
The Broncos managed to add arguably the best DT in the draft in Derek Wolfe. He has been rising on draft boards for weeks, and had even risen into the 1st round in Kiper's mock. While a DT such as Worthy or Still may have been a sexier pick, it is easy to find a major negative with each of them. It is difficult to find much not to like about Wolfe. Easily the best pass-rushing DT in the draft, and has a non-stop motor. I don't know about you guys, but I feel like this is the type of DT that the Broncos have needed for years.
Now on to the selection of Brock Osweiler. Was this a reach? Most likely. But that in no way makes this a bad selection. While he is a raw QB, he has the most upside of any QB not named Luck or RG3. I'll admit I wasn't a fan of this pick to begin with. But after watching several highlights, and reading several scouting reports, I think this is the perfect QB to sit behind Manning for 3-4 years. He is the prototypical pocket QB that Elway has yearned for since joining the Broncos front office. He has a cannon of arm, and he appears to be pretty mobile in the pocket, which is a great asset considering his size. For those that think it's ridiculous to draft a QB to hold a clipboard for 3-4 years, Aaron Rodgers would most likely disagree with you. Osweiler may not be Rodgers, but it goes to show that there is nothing wrong with a young QB sitting and learning behind a great QB. I'm no expert, but I like what I saw out of Osweiler, and I am optimistic that he can be the Broncos franchise QB after Manning retires.
I am a huge fan of the Hillman pick. This was another selection that was/is considered a reach by many. I'm most definitely not in that group. The Broncos have needed a homerun threat in the backfield for a long time. Most on here wanted either Lamar Miller or LaMichael james, myself included. Clearly Miller is a concern for every NFL team up to this point in the draft. James is the same height as Hillman and 5 lbs lighter. Hillman's 40 time was only .05 slower than James, so I don't quite understand the uproar over passing on James. Hillman is explosive, elusive, can catch out of the backfield, and return kicks. While it can be argued that Hillman played against lesser competition, there is nothing to prove that he can't be the same player in the NFL.
I have no issue with someone disagreeing with any of the Broncos selections, because I did the same to begin with. But I think the cheap shots being thrown at the front office are ridiculous. None of us are draft experts. I am willing to bet that EFX can evaluate talent a hell of a lot better than any of us can. I love this blog, and it has shown me that the Broncos have the most passionate fanbase in the NFL. Without a doubt. All I ask is that everyone steps down off their high horse, steps off the ledge, and relaxes until we can see these guys on the field. I'm looking forward to seeing what new Broncos are drafted today, and I hope you guys are too.
