Competition for a final roster spot: Defense edition

Continuing to analyze the competition of our players on the Training Camp for a spot on the 53s final roster, let's now take a look at our defense. For those who want to see the Offense Edition, THIS IS THE LINK.

People say defense wins championship. So, despite we have an elite QB at the helm on the other side of the ball, we need to keep improving our D and have at least a strong one to hold the opposite offenses and don't allow them to burn the clock running all over the day against us. Here we are:

DE: Robert Ayers, Jamie Blatnick, Jeremy Beal, Elvis Dumervil, Jason Hunter, Malik Jackson

No major changes here from last year. Dumervil and Ayers are likely going to be the starters. Hunter will be our excelent rotational player and the others will compete for the only spot available. My favorite one to make it is Malik Jackson over both Beal and Blatnick.

Unit Grade: A-

DT: Justin Bannan, Ben Garland, Jeremy Jarmon, Silver Siliga, Mitch Unrein, Kevin Vickerson, Ty Warren, Derek Wolfe

This group is a big question mark in my mind, but I think Bannan and Warren will make the starting jobs anyway. They are experienced and expensive players and we expect them to excel this year. Wolfe has a certain spot as our interior pass rusher besides playing NT when we use a nickle formation. I think Vick is the best of the other names and, if we carry 5 DTs to the final roster, the others will battle for the last place.

Unit Grade: C+

OLB: Elliot Coffey, Steven Johnson, Von Miller, Cyril Obiozorm, Danny Trevathan, D.J. Williams, Wesley Woodyard

Von Miller is a sure name playing sam and rushing the passer from the edge. DJ is suspended for 6 games and he should work hard to don't be cut and give the starting job to Woody. Trevathan, our new draftee, is expected to be the 4th OLB and I think all the others are going to be cut.

Unit Grade: B+

Jerry Franklin, Nate Irving, Joe Mays, Mike Mohamed

I think Franklin is the only guy who doesn't make the roster. Nate Irving starting, Mays playing some running downs and ST. Mohamed is only going to be there because of his versatility to play the 3 spots and because of DJ's situation as a will.

Unit Grade: C

CB: Champ Bailey, Omar Bolden, Tony Carter, Chris Harris, Coryell Judie, Joshua Moore, Tracy Porter, Robinson Ramzee, Syd'Quan Thompson, Cassius Vaughn

I'd be shocked if the starters aren't Bailey and Porter. Harris has a spot as our nickle and STer and Syd'Quan as our dime and returner. I think Bolden makes the 5th CB and the others will be cut.

Unit Grade: A

S: Mike Adams, David Bruton, Rafael Bush, Quinton Carter, Duke Ihenacho, Rahim Moore

This group really need to step up for the next year. Considering Carter and Moore didn't have a full offseason to improve last year, I still believe them. On the other hand, Dawkins retired and we are going to face a bad time trying to play without him. Mike Adams is an experienced and good player, though he isn't Brian. I think Bruton is the 4th name at safety and Bush and Ihenacho are going to be cut.

Unit Grade: C-

How do you think our defense will play in 2012? Are you confident on this side of the ball? Can we win a Super Bowl trusting our defense?
