77 AFC Championship Game

Since we've gone so long without football, my "significant other" ordered a DVD from Netflix of the Broncos' greatest games. We watched disc one, the 77 AFC Championship Game against the oakland raiders last week... My first thought was that it was good to see Broncos football again, even if it was not live action. All the crowd shots brought back memories of the Orange Crush. Although I saw the Super Bowl and the Division Playoff Game against the Steelers, I had missed this one, and don't remember why. A second impression is just how terrible the kicking game was in comparison with today's game. Short kickoffs, shanked punts, and missed field goals and even extra points seemed to be the norm, not the exception. The Broncos' kicking game was very poor, but the raiders' kickers weren't a whole lot better. The third thing that stuck out in my mind is that while the Broncos may not have had an all-around great team, they certainly had some playmakers on both sides of the ball. Haven Moses, Bob Swenson, Randy Gradishar, and Tom Jackson could all play today. My final notable impression was the lack of creativity in the running game. About half of the offensive plays were quick hitters between the tackles. No motion, no lead blockers, no misdirection, just running it up the gut. Of course, I didn't complain when the Broncos were running out the clock in the fourth quarter, successfully converting third downs. Go Broncos!
