The Bronco's Drafts Vs. Player Longevity.

We must always keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule, and that those exceptions can raise the expectations for what follows. In the NFL there will always be those players who are so exceptional that they blow away all the expectations and thus they raise the bar for all that follow.

We will still always have the averages that we can continue to use to measure the degree of the successes and failures, and it is the NFL's AVGY (Average Years of tenure) that I'm interested in comparing to the Bronco's drafts of the past 19 years. Nineteen ninety four is when the seven round draft began.

First of all, I wanted to make a point to share the following list of the Broncos drafted during these 19 years who stood out from the rest, and so here are the 1st Team All-Pro, & Pro Bowl players, along with some rookie sensations, who were drafted by the Broncos from 1994 - 2011.

The 2001, & 2003 - 2005 Drafts didn't produce any players of note what so ever, and there are very few front offices on NFL teams that will survive many consecutive bad drafts without some change taking place. Take a look at the combined AVGY for the 2003 - 2005 seasons.

Of the 26 players selected, just 4 were still on a roster last year. 77 years / 26 players = 2.96 AVGY. We found out from the last article that the league wide AVGY is actually 4.87 years, and so you can see the problem with those three years. Someone failed to do their home work.

The down side of the Mike Shanahan era has definitely arrived in full force. The fact that the Broncos made the playoffs those three years, and 05' was a 13 win season, helped to hide the dark clouds that were forming. Of course it took three more years to actually see that the 03' - 05' drafts weren't going to "WoW" anyone, and then the fact that the 2006 class held so much promise made it seem like Shanny might ride out the storm.

Cutler, Marshall and Dumervil certainly is not to shabby a recovery for Shanny, but it was just a little to late at that point. Then the fact that we had traded away all but 4 of our 2007 picks couldn't have helped his case.

via cdn.bleacherreport.net YOU ARE JUST GETTING STARTED VON, AND I FOR ONE COULDN'T BE HAPPIER!

In 2010 we won the "muck it up for Miller contest" and got a first year Pro Bowler! The draft class from 08' on are all still in that "short timer" (4 years or less) group, so they may still get a chance to impress us.

I needed to come up with a system to show how each year compares to the high and low of the NFL AVGY, and hopefully it will be easy to follow. For those of you who missed the articles on the longevity of the different NFL positions, those articles and the final article are what this information is based upon.

We know that the AVGY of each round of the draft decreases from the first round on down, and so we have to use the tables for each round to see how the selections measure up. The easiest way to do that is to give each selection and A or a B. The A means that the selection was Above the AVGY for that round, and so the B means it was Below.

A quick review of the first round chart will simplify explaining the additional information we will add that will hopefully give this grading system a little more depth.

FIRST ROUND

Position...# Drafted................AVGY

P/K.................01...............12 years............A 1
O-line..............41...............7.85 years.........A 2
LB's................40...............7.73 years.........A 3
QB's...............32...............7.72 years..........A 4
RB's...............25...............7.64 years..........A 5
DB's...............65...............7.58 years..........A 6
D-Line............76...............7.51 years..........A 7
FIRST ROUND SPLIT (AVGY = 7.48 years)
TE's...............18................7.16 years..........B 8
WR's..............47...............6.51 years..........B 9

Any player cut in camp gets an automatic B 10.

CUT's...........................................................B 10

Since drafts vary for the number of picks per team, we must total the numbers and then divide by the number of players selected. With this system, the lower the final # the better the draft was based upon the AVGY. The best possible grade would be an A 1, and the worst would be a B 10. As we grade each round we can easily show if the position selected in that round was an above (A) the AVGY pick or below (B). Let's do the 2012 draft to see how it scores. There were no 1st or seventh round picks in 2012 as you may remember.

Broncos 2012 draft (0 years ago) 7 players

2 Derek Wolfe..........DT............2012 B 5
2 Brock Osweiler......QB...........2012 A 1
3 Ronnie Hillman......RB...........2012 B 7
4 Omar Bolden.........CB...........2012 A 5
4 Philip Blake...........C.............2012 A 4
5 Malik Jackson.......DT............2012 A 1
6 Danny Trevathan...OLB........2012 A 3

TOTAL...................................26/7 = A 3.71 (Maybe this new FO knows something!)

The draft gets an A 3.71 since the majority of the picks fell into the A category. The 3.71 is the sum of the highlighted #'s divided by the # of players selected. Now for the rest of the years.

Broncos 2011 draft (1 year ago) 9 players

1 Von Miller...............LB..........2011 01 years A 3
2 Rahim Moore.........FS...........2011 01 years A 3

6 Mike Mohamed......LB...........2011 01 years A 3
7 Virgil Green...........TE...........2011 01 years B 8
7 Jeremy Beal..........DL...........2011 01 years A 3

TOTAL...................................................39/9 = A 4.33 (A good first year for this new FO!)

These first two years of the John & John era flat out blows away all the other years in this 19 year study! The 2012 draft is by far the best of them all! This is precisely why I began this entire 14 article study. I was sick and tired of listening to certain people whine about the Elway/Fox drafts simply because they didn't draft "Their Guy!"

I wanted to know if the whiners had a leg to stand on, and it is obvious that they are clueless. As I ran through the years it simply confirmed what this study established. If you draft based upon the projected league wide AVGY, you will be successful. Fox and Elway have obviously done their homework in this area.

It's easy to see that the TE picks heavily affected the totals in 2011. Hopefully these two guys will be exceptions to the AVGY. Neither of them showed us much last year, but they didn't have a Manning under center nor did they get OTA's.

You will see that some of the years below actually were able to beat the NFL's AVGY even though the draft was marginal or average at best. This is where my opening statement comes into play.

That cut hurt, along with that ghost that was picked in the 6th round! How could Shanny have three bad drafts in a row after this year? He didn't select a P/K.

Broncos 2000 draft (12 years ago) 10 players

TOTAL...................................................35/7 = A 5.00
AVGY for this group to date is (39/7) 5.57 years. Another above average draft.

Nash certainly showed why you don't pick a WR in the 1st round, and the cut helped Nash hurt this draft!

Broncos 1997 draft (15 years ago) 3 players

1 Trevor Pryce.........DT............2010 14 years A 7
3 Dan Neil................G............. 2004 08 years A 2
4 Cory Gilliard..........DB...........1997 01 years A 5

TOTAL...................................................14/3 = A 4.67 Great draft for a three man gig, and look at the AVGY!
Final AVGY for this group is (23/3) 7.67 years. Perhaps less picks to waste is a good thing.

A 4 time Pro Bowler will always help the draft class, but to get both Pryce and Neil with only a 3 pick draft was great luck! Neil sure was a steady guy on our line and was highly underrated in my opinion.

Broncos 1996 draft (16 years ago) 12 players

1 John Mobley..........LB........... 2003 08 years A 3
2 Tory James...........DB........... 2006 11 years A 3
3 Detron Smith.........DB...........2003 08 years A 5

5 Patrick Jeffers.......WR.........2001 06 years B 7

7 Leslie Ratliffe........T..............CUT................. B 10
7 Chris Banks.......... G............. 2000 03 years A 1
7 L.T. Levine............RB...........CUT................. B 10
7 Brian Gragert........P............. CUT................. B 10

TOTAL...................................................62/12 = A 5.17
Final AVGY for this group is (50/12) 4.16 years. The cuts hurt this years totals. AVGY = 5.56 without the cuts.

Someone stole my list on this draft, but then forgot about it for 3 picks in the seventh round. No one really needs 4 seventh round picks do they?

Broncos 1995 draft (17 years ago) 7 players

4 Jamie Brown.........T..............1999 05 years A 4
4 Ken Brown............LB............1995 01 years A 3
5 Phil Yeboah-Kodie.LB........... 1996 02 years A 5
6 Fritz Fequiere........G.............CUT................ B 10

7 Steve Russ...........LB............2000 06 years A 4
7 B. Chamberlain..... TE............2003 09 years B 8

TOTAL...................................................42/7 = A 6.00
Final AVGY for this group is (30/7) 4.28 years. Not good! Another high A group to go with a cut. AVGY = 5.0 minus the cut.

Broncos 1994 draft (18 years ago) 5 players

2 Allen Aldridge.........LB............2001 08 years B 7
4 Randy Fuller..........DB...........1999 06 years A 5
7 Keith Burns...........LB............2006 03 years A 4
7 Butler By'not'e.......RB...........1995 02 years B 7
7 Tom Nalen.............C.............2007 14 years A 1, 2) 1st Team All-Pro, 5) Pro Bowls

TOTAL...................................................24/5 = A 4.80 EXCELLENT DRAFT!
Final AVGY for this group is (33/5) 6.60 years. It isn't hard to see why Tom Nalen fits the A1 7th round category to a Tee! He also helped a short draft year a great deal with his ability to extend his career.

The correlation between a low draft # and a high AVGY is unmistakable. If a team drafts with the known longevity statistics in mind they will increase their success rate. It is when those statistics are ignored that they will undoubtedly fail. The rare occasion where an unexpected exceptional player pops up out of the norm can be expected, but the Tom Brady's in the sixth round simply will not be there so don't plan your draft around it.

Here is the comparison:

Fox/Elway Average = 4.02

Shanahan Average = 5.79

McDaniels Average = 6.61

I'll wrap this up by providing you all with the 7 rounds of tables that I used to "grade" these draft years, so that any of you who wish to use them to look at other teams may do so.
