A Valuable Role For Knowshon?

As everyone around MHR is aware, Knowshon Moreno has become a very controversial player. Much of this stems from the fact that he was overdrafted by McDaniels, and a lot of it also has to do with the fact that every time he starts to show some productivity, he has been injured. If he had been drafted in the third round and had been able to stay healthy and put up the type of numbers he has shown when he wasn't injured, I think he would be viewed as a valuable backup running back. But he was drafted higher than he should have been drafted, and he hasn't been able to stay on the field.

So what should we do with him? There have been a few around here who have advocated for cutting him outright and using the roster spot on someone else. Others have proposed trading him for whatever we can get. I have another idea, and I think it would potentially solve two problems.

My proposal is to use Knowshon as our punt and kick returner. He has shown good hands, and he is at his best when he is in space rather than churning through the line of scrimmage, so I think we have every reason to believe that he would be good in this role. But the real value of this move, in my eyes, would be to relieve Eric Decker of his punt returning duties. Decker is still listed as the only punt returner on the official Broncos depth chart. Don't get me wrong, Decker is a great punt returner. But he's too valuable as a WR to have him returning punts. Moving Moreno to this position would reduce the risk of Decker being injured, and it would also allow us to get some value out of a RB who is currently 4th on the depth chart.

My feeling is that there is very little downside to this move. Knowshon returned punts a few times in college, and I don't think that fielding the ball would be a problem. As we all know, the punt returner faces significant injury risk, so why not transfer that risk to a player who isn't contributing in any other way? If he gets hurt (again), then we'll know that he is just one of those players who can't stay healthy. If he doesn't get hurt, then maybe we've found a valuable role for him, and we can keep Decker healthy at WR where he belongs.

What say you, MHR? Should Knowshon return kicks and punts for us? Why or why not?
