After watching the preseason, like many of you, I was extremely concerned about our depth (or rather, lack thereof). However, those concerns are being quickly erased. Attempting to guess the 8 players that will be inactive in week one is pleasantly difficult. Here's my guess:
Offense
-Brock Osweiler: Unlikely we would carry three active QBs come game day.
-Lance Ball: This may come as a bit of a surprise but seems more likely now that he has lost his backup spot to Moreno and since the staff is heavily vested in Hillman.
-Phillip Blake: His preseason struggles have been well documented. This coupled with the fact most teams only carry 7 offensive lineman on the game day roster makes him a logical choice. Side Note: Given his upside and flexibility (can play C or G), it's disappointing to see him progressing at such a slow pace - particularly given his age.
-Chris Kuper: Injured
Defense
-Mitch Unrein: More or less an educated guess here but carrying 3 DTs makes sense given the versatility of Wolfe and Jackson.
-Steven Johnson: With Irving and Brooking having the ability to play MLB and Trevathon coming in on Nickel, I could see Johnson sitting. Side Note: If and when DJ comes back, it will be very interesting to see who gets cut from our current LB group.
Tony Carter: Bolden gets the nod over Carter because of his return ability although I could see us carrying 5 corners, in which case an additional DL or LB would sit.
Quinton Carter: This is a really tough call but carrying 5 safeties on game day just seems excessive. Plus, Carter may not 100% after sitting much of camp. Once he is back to full strength, safety will be an interesting position to watch. He is too good of a player with too much upside to be a healthy scratch.
This is just my best guess. Any thoughts?
