Chip Kelly Coaching Rumors: Browns Back Out, Kelly To Stay At Oregon

USA TODAY Sports

Chip Kelly spent all weekend talking to the Browns and Eagles before deciding to stay in college football

Chip Kelly was wined and dined, but in the end his heart just wasn't in it. After meeting with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles about their coaching vacancies this weekend, Chip Kelly decided being the head coach at Oregon was a pretty good deal after all. Kelly decided after meeting with the two teams that he wasn't ready to leave the college game.

It comes as a bit of a surprise since Kelly has been tied to NFL jobs since last offseason when he nearly agreed to become the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kelly eventually turned down the Bucs and Tampa hired Rutgers coach Greg Schiano instead. Add to that the fact that the Ducks face possible sanctions from the NCAA due to recruiting violations and the time seemed right for Kelly to jump ship.

With Kelly gone, both the Browns and Eagles must start their head coaching search from scratch. Cleveland is said to be interested in Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians while the Eagles flew to Denver on Sunday to talk to Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.

Another team that was going to talk to McCoy - the Buffalo Bills - cancelled that meeting when the hired Syracuse football coach Doug Marrone to take over for Chan Gailey. Marrone has NFL ties, spending time as the Offensive Coordinator of the New Orleans Saints before heading to Syracuse.
