Early in the season, I replied to a post and mentioned that the Broncos had spent large dollars on an offense, and they had spent the money well because the offense was very good. I also said it was too bad they had not spent as much on defense because that was their Achilles, and it could keep them from winning a Superbowl.
My comment was not warmly received.
Five games in and the Broncos are 5-0, and they are 1st in points scored, 1st in passing yardage, 1st in total yards and 15th in rushing. So their offensive money was well spent.
On defense, the Broncos are 24th in points averaged against them, 28th in overall offensive yards gained against them, 32nd in passing yards accumulated per game by opponents and 1st in rushing yard defense. The first in rushing defense isn't surprising since every team is throwing for season high yards against a poor secondary.
The Broncos have to hope that they can simply outscore all their opponents. That almost didn't work out against Dallas.
I'll stand on what I said at the first of the season. The allocation of money toward the offense is working just fine, but the defense got left out. Scoring a lot of points puts fans in the seats even without a Superbowl win, so a high scoring offense is good business, but if you can't stop the other team it may not be enough to win it all.
I've read the posts on the injury issue. I don't think the missing players are that big a factor. I think the defense is not going to improve much after everyone is back. Moving from 24th to 19th isn't good enough.
