I just got done watching Jack Del Rio's Monday press conference. Mixed in among the many informative and downright effusive answers to reporters' questions were a few words he offered about Von Miller … At first Del Rio seemed a little uneasy when a reporter asked if Von's added weight has affected his play. He said 'I can't answer that directly." Then he volunteered a nuanced exhortation for Von to step it up in the games ahead this year. He gave just the right amount of encouragement mixed with high expectation. (By the way, JDR did not mention any injury Von may have had in the Chiefs game.)
I really want Von to succeed and be awesome again. I’m not denying that he’s had positive effect in games — getting a couple sacks, making a couple tackles, getting double-teamed and freeing up other defenders, breaking up an Alex Smith screen pass — but no one seems to be talking much about the elephant in the room, i.e. the lack of the big-time, significant, game-changing impact we expected from him.
- Has the added weight slowed him down?
- Is he still rusty?
- Are there lingering mental effects from the suspension and all that went with it?
Whatever it is, I’m rooting for him to get it figured out … I have hopes he’ll adapt to his new BIG body and get some quickness back. Is that so wrong?! :-)
