As my big brother has reminded me (way too many times) over the years "Sometimes your 'smooth-ometer' gets stuck, meaning my mouth outruns my thinking. A good number of my posts over the last several weeks have returned in some way to the theme that I see us taking a RB, O-lineman, and DT early in the draft. That's all well and good but why? Well, reading other people's posts, like Rodney, Digger, Broncomath, Metalman, Scotty, McGeorge, and a host of others moved the rust and crust from my mind to discover that answer. Here's the underlying picture to the general theme of my comments which are/were:
I have a feeling the draft is going to come to us this year, meaning someone rated pretty highly will fall to us from one round to the next.
While our O-line performed exceptionally well through the season, despite injuries, there are still those, including me, that thought bigger D-lines pushed them around ala Baltimore in the playoffs. If we had had one or two more elite level or close O-lineman Holliday could have been a feature back. In other words, give me some hogs up front and dang near (cleaning up my language Kap;O) anyone could run behind them. Give us a Banger RB and we kick Baltimore's ah.....butt. Give us a pocket collapsing DT and we dominate all the way to and through the SB.
So, having said all that, here's how I see/hope the draft goes this year: We see either an elite O-lineman (I mean a road grading terror with room to grow) fall to us in the 1st or one of the higher rated DT's slide to that pick. Realistically, it appears Eddie Lacy/Lacey (seen it spelled both ways) is on the bubble as a 1st round pick but I sure would like to see that Banger RB no matter what round he comes in). So, my guess is we'll see either a RB or DT slide back to us in the second giving us more value to that pick, same for the 3rd round depending which one we pick up in the 2nd. Even if we trade back again this year, which I think is very possible, I see us getting value for our 1st three picks.
The proof is in the pudding so we'll see when the picks are actually made. Just remember this amateur is predicting an O-lineman, RB, and DT in the first 3 round, in no particular order.
