Drafting a Mike early has been a popular choice around these parts as it has been in the MSM. However Elway has said Irving and Johnson will have their shot at the starting position and Bradley has been added in what seems to be either veteran competition or veteran depth. With only a third of snaps taken in the base and the players currently in the roster who could play Mike, I amongst others have argued Mike isn't worth spending a high pick on and maybe it isn't. However we have failed to address who is going to line up in the Nickel which is probably run as often as the base package if not more often.
Woodyard is a certainty and Trevathan would be my guess to join him. Trevathan impressed last year but are the Johns going to be content with a 6th round pick from a year ago playing so many downs? Also who rotates with them? Irving, Bradley or Johnson. Yes there are numbers in this group but is this a group the Johns will be confident in? Do these players have the coverage skills suited to the Nickel? Is there sufficient depth if Woodyard or Trevathan go down?
If there is doubt to any of these questions then a linebacker of some description could well come early in the draft if they have those coverage skills which are becoming more more desirable for linebackers.
