Examining the Numbers: Jacob Hester

USA TODAY Sports

First of all, I've been engaging in a few discussions about the effectiveness of having Jacob Hester on the roster. I've disagreed with Calikula on this before and I was talking with Gelder about it today, so I decided to go through and do the number-crunching. All stats are from the excellent Pro Football Reference. I wanted to look at his short-yardage capabilities specifically, so I sorted it to show all stats from a down and distance of any down and 3 or better to go.

Here is the full list of carries that match that requirement:

Total stats: 40 carries, 147 yards, 3.7 yards per carry, 3 TDs. The real stats: 65% first down percentage, 7.5% TD percentage. Those are some pretty impressive numbers there, which lead me to believe that he will be the short-yardage back without a doubt. He already played that role in the Ravens playoff game.

EDIT, Monday 8:40 PM Also, keep in mind that a lot of those carries (in fact, all but three) were behind a perennially dismal San Diego offensive line.

Kudos also to BroncoCUBuffs for pointing out that the Broncos might be trying to hide Hester in the preseason and under-use him before the regular season gets under way. I think this is a huge element of things as they stand.

Finally, a quote on Hester from Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase:

"It should help our short-yardage, goal-line, four-minute packages," Gase said of Hester’s hard-nosed running style. "It’s been a big point of emphasis this offseason to figure out how we get him on the field and use him a little more, whether he’s playing tailback, fullback, an F-tight end and H-back. We’re going to try to use him as many ways as possible."

Thanks for reading! I'm happy to answer questions.
