I just wanted to share my opinion on how i think the roster breakdown will look to start the season compared to how it looked at the end of last season. And offer how i came to form my opinion. Let's take a look:
5 RB/FBs (counting Chris Gronkowski)
6 WRs (counting Trindon Holiday)
My 2013 prediction:
5 RB/FBs (CJ and Lance fighting for 5th spot)
7 WRs (DT, ED, WW, King, Holliday, McDuffie, and Orton)
3 TEs (Tamme and Green fighting for 3rd spot)
6 CBs (Champ, DRC, Harris, Carter, Bolden, Webster)
This is what I think we likely see come regular season. The main difference is that we don't have a 3rd QB eating up a valuable roster spot, keep an extra WR and an extra corner, and lose a TE.
Why only 2 Quarterbacks? Because (as McGeorge pointed out this morning) what is Dysert really going to do for us if both Manning and Oz go down in a game? Chances are, not alot. We could use this spot somewhere else this year like WR. I have us keeping an extra WR this year partly based on McDuffie's health and partly off of our formations. I think he makes this team as a viable backup for Wes Welker. It is my opinion that with more 3 WR sets that we would really benefit by having 6 "true" receivers and 1 punt/kickoff returner that gets used here and there on offense.
With more 3 WR sets, the less likely we need 4 tight ends which is why I think (as long as Dreesen is healthy) that Tamme and Green are fighting for one roster spot. Lastly, I think we carry 6 corners this year. I think Tony Carter (love him or hate him) brings play making ability which locks him as our 4th corner. That leaves Bolden and Webster both of whom are Elway guys hand picked. That makes me think we keep 6.
All in all, as it is every year, this year will leave us missing someone who we really would love to have on our roster. This is true every year but this year I think will stand out because we have so much talent everywhere. This is a good problem for us to have. I can get on board with any 53 management decides we should keep because I know they have the Broncos' best interest at heart. Sometimes it may be tough though to see fan favorites or players we personally like leave the team. This is the year that it will sting the most when we make cuts. But this is the year where every player on the 53 man roster can say they contributed both on and off the field to be able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
