The Broncos are really in a QB quandary right now going into Mannings third year. Will Manning play out his contract? Will Manning survive the 2014 season and it's inevitable land mines? Is B.O. the former second rounder and very, very inexperienced quarterback (least experienced QB on the roster) ready to take the helm if Manning is hurt or does retire or God forbid go play for another team? Does Elway think that Brock is the QB of the future? Is it true that Brock has photos of John Elway's son wearing girls panties? Will the Duke draft a QB this May? Everyone is talking Safety and SAM and WR and the OG but we all know that this is a QB driven league and this team isn't going to drive very far without a quality play caller. These are all questions that need to be asked, that need to be answered and need to be discussed sooner rather than later.
Here's one option. It was recently announced that the Washington Native Americans are willing to trade Cousins for a 2nd round pick in the 2014 draft. The Skins also recently said that they had no intentions of letting Cousins go unless a team made an offer they couldn't refuse. I'm not sure what that means but it sounds like Dan Snyder is unsure that this RG3 experiment is going to work out and if he lets Cousins walk then he will be starting over at the starting QB spot. Cousins wants out of the nation's capital and I can't blame him but he stated that he wants a chance to start in the near future. Would Cousins be willing to ride the pine until Mannings exit? I doubt it but from what I saw from Cousins in College and in relief of RG3 last year it looks like Cousins has the ability to be a starting QB in the NFL. Cousins would be a good fit for the current broncos considering he could learn from an actual QB in Manning and Cousins wouldn't have the pressure of winning with a bad team when Manning finally hangs them up.
Cousins was drafted late in the 4th round by Mike Shannahan knowing that RG3 would spend most of his time on IR. Some thought that was a steal as some had Cousins going in the 3rd round and as high as the 2nd round. It's kind of the opposite of what the broncos did with B.O. in that draft when they took a 4th round QB early in the 2nd. Cousins was battle tested at MSU and gained a lot of valuable experience as a Spartan. He is the winningest QB in MSU history and does just about everything well. Good arm strength, quick release and has the ability to make plays outside of the pocket. He is about the same size Elway was back in his playing days weighing in at 6'3" 210lbs.
So what's a 2nd round pick worth? What are the chances of hitting on a 2nd rounder? No one really knows and it's mostly a crap shoot so I'd rather take a shot at Cousins than some draft crap shoot. Thanks to the hard working folks at ProFootballReference, here is a look at the broncos history in the 2nd round. A few hits (Chavous, Fletcher, Lytle, Jones and arguably the most talented RB in team history....Clinton Portis) lots of misses and even a couple Hall of Famers that got away.
