Report: Broncos, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie's reps met during NFL combine

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Broncos said they will let their free agents test the market, but perhaps that isn't quite true when it comes to their 27-year old cornerback.

The Denver Broncos met with representatives of cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie during the combine, according to Fox Sports' Ross Jones, citing a league source. Jones calls Rodgers-Cromartie the Broncos' "top priority" in free agency.

Rodgers-Cromartie, who has played for three teams in six seasons, is valued as the team's top priority, though other prominent players such as wide receiver Eric Decker and running back Knowshon Moreno are set to hit the market.

While a deal for the veteran cornerback isn't imminent, the sides have agreed to keep in touch in the coming weeks.

DRC is an interesting case. In one year in Denver, he hasn't quite shown enough to justify a mega-buck multi-year deal, but he was still one of the best cornerbacks in the league in 2013.  He ranked fifth among all cornerbacks in the league in 2013, according to ProFootballFocus.com, just one year after ranking 98th with Philadelphia.

This, along with Jones' "top priority" comment adds credence to speculation that DRC could be a "sleeper" franchise tag candidate for the Broncos. If Rodgers-Cromartie excels when playing in one-year deals, why not give him another one?
