Don't get me wrong. I like Britton Colquitt. He's a fantastic punter. He's no longer super cheap, though.
We have a team based on the premise that not only do we have Peyton F. Manning slinging it out there, but that he's doing it very well. If either of those things is not true, we have no chance anyway. See: every loss in 2013-14 including the-game-which-shall-not-be-mentioned-here.
If we have PFM, I submit that we don't really need to punt from anywhere on the field. Many statistical analysis support this for any team, but especially for teams with very good offenses. See: Denver 2013-2014.
OK, I get that few fans, front offices, or coaches are really ready for this approach. So we punt once in a while, OK? See I can be reasonable! How bout the best UDFA we can get our hands on? Doesn't have to be as good as Britton Colquit. Doesn't even have to be as good as his brother or dad. On those rare occasions where we decide to , sigh, punt the ball instead of light it up, an average punter with decent hang time should still allow us to play the situation in a (yawn) conservative manner. Or we go super-crazy like me and free up a roster spot for a non-kicker. Whatever.
Why does any team pay more than the UDFA minimum for a punter? In the salary cap era, doesn't make sense to me to tie up cap space on a guy who statistically speaking we shouldn't really use ever anyway. Just sayin'. Feel free to roast my terrible opinion and reckless manner. I can take it.
Wouldn't that change the playcalling options if we were constantly in four-down territory? Wouldn't defenses be even more scared of us? The mind races...
