My take on how Denver should play the Draft.

I heard it brilliantly said in the comments sections not long ago that a team with Peyton Manning pretty much can count on not having a 1st round pick. Their point was that picks below 25th overall historically produce comparable talent/pro production to a 2nd round pick. So we can almost always count on the guys we would really want to draft being gone before we pick every year. We have seen this play out differently in the past two drafts. In 2012 we traded back and grabbed Wolfe and used the extra picks to move up and grab Hillman. In 2013 we had someone who was rated pretty high by most experts drop to us so we pulled the trigger, classic case of BPA drafting.

With that in mind, let's assess our needs heading into the draft. In no particular order I think we need CB, OL, ILB, and WR and FS depth. I have seen a lot of people talk about our lack of depth at RB and how we should draft another one, but over the last 5 years we have spent a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick on as many RBs in a league where their value is plummeting by the day and free agents are cheaper than ever. So I will be pissed if we spend yet another pick on RB this draft. I apologize for that rant, moving on.

I purchased the premium version of Fanspeak's mock draft tool that includes trades (Yes I'm that nerdy). Btw, if any of the MHR staff wants to use my account for mocks or an article let me know I will happily give you my info. In my mock I traded back at the beginning of the first round with the Jaguars for their 2nd (39th), 4th (105th), and 4th(114th). This works out perfectly because the Jags didn't get a QB in the 1st so will be wanting to trade back up and they have two 4ths. My plan was to grab a guy at 39 that would have been available to us at 31, and then use my two new 4ths as ammo to move up in the second. My original plan was going to be Morgan Moses and then Jean-Baptiste or something like that, but Moses was gone at 39 so here's what I ended up with.

39 Jason Verrett CB
55 David Yankey G
95 Demarcus Lawrence DE/OLB
105 Donte Moncrief WR
5th Bryan Stork C
6th Avery Williamson ILB
7th Jeff Janis WR

I was super excited about how this played out and would love to see Denver do this in the draft. Lets break it down.

39 Jason Verrett CB

I have seen Verrett mocked to us a few times at 31 and I didn't like him that early and thought he was too short. However, I recently watched some tape of him against Baylor and he absolutely shut his man down. They left him on an island all game and he had one pass completed on him for around 10 yards. He ran a 4.38 at the combine and was top 3 in the vertical jump, which is what you need from a guy who is 5'9". He is active in the run game and I saw some good tackles and blitzes from him on his highlight reel. I think our need for a CB has been lost a little bit in all the O-line and ILB talk. Lets not forget that we currently have Kayvon Webster as a starting CB, the guy that was constantly picked on and beaten by Rivers and Brady when our starters would go down. Not only that but what happens if injury prone Talib goes out or Harris isn't healthy at the beginning of the season? Plus, Harris is up for big money next year so unless we want 18-20 million locked up in our two CBs, we need to have backup plan in place. Some say Verrett is the best cover guy in the draft and the 2nd best corner behind Gilbert. I'm willing to take a chance on his height at 39.

55 David Yankey G

I think our needs at interior O-Line have been well documented, and I really like Yankey. What I love even more is that we're getting him at 55 not 31.

95 Demarcus Lawrence DE/OLB

One of the best natural pass-rushers in the draft. Is a little small but could develop behind two of the best in the game and rotate into Nickel/Dime situations in the future

105 Donte Moncrief WR

Another benefit from the Jacksonville trade. I traded our 4th(131th) and the Jags other 4th(114th) to move up for Yankey so we still had the Jags 4th round pick which is considerably higher than ours, allowing us to get a wideout that I love at a good position.

5th Bryan Stork C

Best available O-Linemen at this pick. He's the 4th ranked C in the class and has some experience at G. Here's what CBS had to say about him

6th Avery Williamson ILB

I did a fanpost on him a few days ago here. I think between him, Irving, Jamar Chaney (who Ozark recently brought to my attention with this fanpost) we will be ok. For what it's worth I think Shazier and Mosely will be long gone even at 31 and none of the other mid round guys impress me. Side note: if I see one more person say we should take Borland in the first or second round I'm going to lose it. We might as well re-sign Joe Mays or Lenon.

7th Jeff Janis WR

The obligatory pick of everybody's favorite late round, small school WR prospect. I like him too, he has size and production. Not sure he actually lasts this long but he did in my mock.

So there you go. What do you think MHR? Do you love it? Hate it? What would you do different? Let me know in the comments!
