Orlando Franklin - 4th Most Penalized NFL Player - 2013

Orlando Franklin, the 4th (tied with three others at 11 penalties each) Most Penalized Player in the NFL during the 2013 season is angry. Clean up your penalties my friend! Focus your anger on THAT!

This breakdown begins with a few penalty facts you may not know:

The Kansas City Chiefs held the record for getting the most penalty yards in a season, 1,304 in 1998, and finished the season 7 - 9. The Raiders won second (1,274) in 1969 and third place (1,266) in 1996. I'll bet you can guess what happened next.

The Raiders set a new all time record in 2011 with 1358 penalty yards in a season. Is it any wonder that Bronco fans hate these two teams? On the flip side, Miami holds the record for the most consecutive seasons leading the league (9), for the fewest penalties committed. (1976-1984)

The most penalties called on one team during a game has a three way tie at 22. The most recent was San Fransisco (22) vs. Buffalo in 98. But, the highest penalised team in a Bronco game goes to the Oakland Raiders (20) on Dec. 15, 1996. I really hate those guys.

The Fewest Penalties (Both Teams combined) in a game is a four way tie: A big fat ZERO, and that hasn't happened since 1940.

By the #'s:

Three players received a dozen penalties last year.

Of the 35 NFL players who went without a penalty last year, none of them are Broncos.

A quick glance at the % of NFL players column above will show you that about 73% of the players in the league get 3 or fewer penalties.

When players are singled out as being in the top five tenths of one percent of the league, it tends to make them stand out in the group. I'll bet they hope it isn't THIS list.

That's where Orlando Franklin finds himself!

Below are last years TTL for the "Most Frequent Penalty Types" Called in 2013.

False Start & Offensive Holding are the two most frequently called penalties EVERY year.

During the last 15 years, False Start topped the list (13 years in a row) until Offensive Holding took over during the last two years (2012 & 13).

Offensive holding always tops the list for most penalty yards awarded each year averaging 5,636 yards/year over the period. That's equal to an average of 3.2 miles of yards lost per year on that penalty alone.

Let's see how the Broncos ten most penalized players scored on these primary penalties last year. They all ended up with total penalties higher than 70% of the league. (The Table Below Includes Declined Penalties, so the total for O.Franklin shows 12 instead of 11)

That concludes this week's look at the Denver Broncos penalties. Next week will compare the Fox years to the McDaniels years.

I was able to agregate the above information from the links list below. Much thanks to these sites for compiling this data:

Shows total penalties and yards per team from 1932 – 2013.

(Interesting stuff! Compares the "Best & Worst" teams in different categories throughout history. I had to update my stats though. Last updated 2007. Come-on-man! This is the official site!)

Although this site does a great job on nitty gritty details, you must watch it for accuracy. You must be careful though, as I found that some of it's stats didn't jive with what NFL.com has listed.

I believe that the difference is the totals on this site include the declined penalties since they also show a "yes or no" adjacent to each penalty in the "declined" column.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2013,

The totals of individual penalty types for the league (that I could find) are here. It breaks down the league totals on each penalty on a weekly basis, but it only covers the past 15 years, and doesn't give breakdowns for individual players or teams. (1999 - 2013)

If anyone knows of a more detailed source for penalty stats please let me know.
