Now that we've got the East-West Shrine Game, the Senior Bowl, the Combine, free agency, and most if not all of the pro-days in the books prospect rankings are pretty well set. The first version of my Broncos mock draft looked like this:
Round 1 - Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
Round 2 - Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
Round 3 - Christian Jones, ILB, Florida State
Round 4 - Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor
Round 5 - Jeff Janis, WR, Saginaw Valley
Round 6 - Tyler Larsen, C, Utah State
Round 7 - Marqueston Huff, FS, Wyoming
But now things have changed and it's time for an update. I still believe the biggest holes in our roster are at cornerback and middle linebacker with additional depth needed at defensive end, wide receiver, offensive line, running back, and free safety. Here are my final picks for the 2014 MHR mock draft contest:
Round 1 Pick #31 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
I think most Bronco fans would love to get Ryan Shazier late in Round 1 but I don't think he slips past the Packers at #21 and I personally don't want an overrated Alabama player with a significant injury history like C.J. Mosley. In my previous mock draft I took another cornerback, Bradley Roby, with this pick but I think he will be off the board too. Kyle Fuller doesn't have Roby's speed but he's not as raw either. At 6'0" 190lbs with a 4.49 sec 40 Fuller is the perfect candidate to be our shutdown corner of the future. *We did bring in Fuller for a private workout*
Round 2 Pick #63 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Trent Murphy, DE, Stanford
When I saw that Trent Murphy is now the 71st ranked player overall in this year's draft according to CBSSports/NFLDraftScout I was giddy as a schoolgirl. Just a few short months ago Trent Murphy was a sure 1st round prospect but after a disastrous Senior Bowl and a very average Combine his stock has fallen and we're going to be the beneficiaries. We lost Robert Ayers in free agency but I never thought he was that good, Murphy would be a tremendous upgrade.
Round 3 Pick #95 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Christian Jones, ILB, Florida State
If we can get Christian Jones I won't be sad about missing out on Ryan Shazier. Jones is the kind of player we need at middle linebacker, fast and excellent in pass coverage. I think it's comical Jones is the 123rd ranked player overall in this draft just because Florida State misused him as a defensive end this year out of pure necessity but it's to our benefit so I won't complain too much.
Round 4 Pick #131 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Devin Street, WR, Pittsburgh
Seeing Eric Decker go to the Jets hurt a little bit but I do think he's very replaceable. Devin Street is 6'3" 198lbs with a 4.50 sec 40 and catches everything that comes his way - the perfect guy to help us forget Decker.
Round 5 Pick #171 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami
This big fella cost himself a lot of money having a little temper tantrum at Miami's pro-day but his loss is our gain. Seantrel Henderson is a 6'7" 331lbs behemoth who would fit nicely at right tackle or left tackle in a pinch. If John Elway and company really want to kick Orlando Franklin inside this is the guy I want as his replacement.
Round 6 Pick #207 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Rajion Neal, RB, Tennessee
I think Rajion Neal could be one of the biggest steals of the draft, just a solid running back with no major strengths or weaknesses. Unfortunately, scouts have noticed what I saw in this kid and his stock is rising - I hope we can get him in the late 6th round.
Round 7 Pick #246 - Our beloved Denver Broncos select Marqueston Huff, FS, Wyoming
Marqueston Huff is undersized but tenacious, I believe he could put a little pressure on Rahim Moore and be an excellent backup at free safety.
There you have it! Fell free to rip it apart and tell me who you guys would take instead. GO BRONCOS!!!
