Name: Jacob Dearlove
MHR Staff since: March 2014
Bio: First of all, my name is Jacob Dearlove, which is usually a conversation-starter on itself. "That's such a cool last name", or "Do you love deer?" are typical responses that arise upon introducing myself to someone. The answers to those responses are "yes" and "not particularly", in case you were wondering.
Anyway, some people have already picked up on my extra "u's" in colour and favourite and other words, and have asked what country I'm from, so I guess the word is out; I'm from Canada (eh), where we really like our u's. I'm originally from London, Ontario, but currently live in Waterloo, Ontario. The reason I live in Waterloo is that I'm currently in university, working on a degree in journalism. I'm hoping to translate my experience on MHR and my journalism degree into a career in sports reporting, preferably football obviously. I grew up with two sisters, who are two and five years younger than me. Growing up in Canada, I played hockey from a very young age, but started playing football in high school. I played corner all four years of high school, and wore number 24 to rep Champ Bailey.
As far as my love for the Broncos goes, it's not a terribly exciting story, but it's worth telling anyway. My dad is a big Broncos fan himself, and I grew up watching the games from a very young age. I was only four and five years old for the Broncos back-to-back Super Bowls, unfortunately, so I don't remember them very vividly, but I've watched them enough times since that it's probably fair I claim to remember them. When I was ten years old I started avidly following the Broncos, watching every Sunday's game out of my own volition. My favourite (there's that u again) current Broncos are Chris Harris Jr., Von Miller, Demaryius Thomas, and Peyton Manning of course. In the past, I was a big fan of Brandon Marshall (still am), as well as Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins, John Lynch, Terrell Davis, and John Elway of course. I've converted my girlfriend into a Broncos fan now as well. It was easily done with Eric Decker on the team, but she'll need some new favourite players because all of her favourites left this off-season (Decker, Moreno, Woody, Champ). I am an active hater of the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens (mainly just Joe Flacco), and the Broncos' AFC West foes. I also tend to hate on the Niners and Seahawks because I live with fans of each team (it's safe to say that the playoffs got pretty heated in our house this year).
Football is not the only sport that I follow, but I definitely follow it more in-depth than anything else. The other teams I cheer for are predominantly Toronto teams, due to the fact that they are closer than anyone else and I grew up cheering for them. I'm a die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) fan, and I've suffered through far too many years of mediocrity from them. I also am a Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) fan. If I have to choose an NBA or MLS team, it would be the Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC, but I hardly really pay attention to those leagues, so I can't claim to be a fan. Since beginning to write for MHR and becoming more and more involved in the Denver sports atmosphere, I can't deny the little bit of fan-hood that is growing within me for the Colorado Rockies and Colorado Avalanche.
Other quick tidbits about myself:
- I enjoy video games. Mainly Madden, NHL, and other sports games, but I'm also a fan of thriller games like the Bioshock series.
- I drink 2-4 cups of black coffee a day, it's the only way to drink it.
- I'm a big fan of craft beer. Amber beers and IPAs are usually up my alley.
- I have an ever-growing collection of fitted hats and jerseys.
- Favourite movies: Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight Trilogy, I Love You Man, Remember the Titans.
- I suck at writing biographies about myself.
Anyway, I'm really excited to be writing for Mile High Report, thanks for the reception so far, I look forward to continuing to interact with each and every one of you guys on the site. Follow me on Twitter and interact with me there, I'd love to discuss anything Broncos or NFL-related (@jacobdearlove).
Favorite post: If you haven't had the chance to read anything that I've written before, here is a link to my favourite post on MHR so far. It's about Chris Harris' versatility at cornerback.
Cheers, Broncos Country!
