Good Penalties

I'd like to purpose that there are definitely some very good penalties, and I'd like to see MORE of them committed this year!

Offense:

Offensive Holding – 10 yards

Offensive Holding is a good thing if it keeps the quarterback from getting hit, but it indicates that the O-lineman to blame was getting beat. Hey, no one is perfect during any season, but some are much better than others, and every O-lineman would rather be called for holding than be charged with a QB sack, hit or hurry.

Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 - O.Franklin & C.Clark tied at 7 each.

2012 - R.Clady & C.Kuper tied at 4 each. O.Franklin & M.Ramirez tied at 3 each.

2011 - R.Clady 11, O.Franklin 5

2010 - R.Clady 5, J.Walton 4

2009 - D.Graham 5, B.Hamilton 4, R.Clady & C.Kuper with 3 each.

During Clady's 2011 season, he was hampered by a shoulder injury that didn't show up on the injury reports but it showed up in holding penalties.

Offensive Pass Interference – 10 yards

Offensive pass interference can be good, if it is the only way for a receiver to stop an interception, and I'll take the 10 yards to keep the possession every time.

Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 E.Decker 3, K.Moreno 2, D.Thomas 1

2012 E.Decker 2

2011 E.Decker 1, M.Willis 1

2010 D.Graham 1, E.Royal 1, D.Thomas 1

2009 T.Scheffler 2, E.Royal 1

Defense:

Defensive Holding – 5 yards and an automatic first down!

Just like Seattle taught us, the men in stripes will only call so many of these, and if it gives the DB's an edge that's a good thing in my book! It would be nice if all of our DB's could be like Champ Bailey in his prime, but we know that isn't happening.

Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 - C.Harris 4, D.Ihenacho 3, T.Carter 2

2012 - C.Bailey 4, D.Trevathan 1, M.Adams 1

2011 - C.Harris 2, Q.Carter 1,

2010 - R.Fields 1, Ja.Williams 1

2009 M.Haggan 2, W.Woodyard 1, B.Dawkins 1

Roughing the Passer – 15 yards and an automatic first down!

This is a penalty that I think is a good one under the right circumstances. If it's the result of a player (Von Miller, Ware etc.) who is "Bringing the Wood", "Fired Up", or "Making a Statement" then I say bring it on! I'd like to see a few of these against the NFC & AFC West this year for sure!

Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 - K.Vickerson 1, V.Miller 1
2012 - V.Miller 3, R.Ayers 1
2011 - R.Ayers 1
2010 - M.Thomas 1, R.Fields 1, J.Hunter 1
2009 - R.Fields 1, E.Dumervil 1, V.Holliday 1

Defensive Offside – (& Encroachment) 5 yards

"How could this be considered a good penalty," you ask? Simply because it will naturally happen when we have guys with a great jump off the snap who are monsters at rushing the passer.

Von Miller's only two penalties in 2013 were one of these and a roughing the passer. If we never have these penalties, then you can bet we have no pass rush either.

Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 - D.Wolfe 2, S.Phillips 2, V.Miller 1,
2012 - E.Dumervil 6, V.Miller 4, R.Ayers 1
2011 - V.Miller 2+ E2, R.McBean E3, E.Dumervil 2,
2010 - M.Haggan 1, M.Thomas E1, J.Hunter 1, K.Vickerson E1, R.Ayers 1
2009 - E.Dumervil 2, R.Fields 1, A.Smith 1, D.Williams 1, R.Hill 1

Unnecessary Roughness - 15 yards; automatic first down if committed by defense.

I would love to see more "Good Unnecessary Roughness" penalties this year! What's the difference in good and bad? Good is when it happens from a player who is fired up and just trying to do his job while making a physical statement.

2010, 11 & 13 were big years for Broncos players on this penalty. Even our punter got one in 2011, so who says punters don't have some moxie? Bad is when the player is intentionally trying to cause an injury.

Defined as: "A conduct- or safety-related infraction: such as hitting a ball carrier after he is already out of bounds, "piling on" a ball carrier who is already down, or violent contact with an opponent who is away from and out of the play."

Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 - K.Vickerson 2, O.Franklin 1, D.R-C 1, K.Moreno 1, M.Jackson 1, R.Moore 1, M.Adams 1

2012 - J.Mays 1, M.Adams 1, W.Woodyard 1, R.Moore 1

2011 - Z.Beadles 1, V.Miller 1, D.Williams 1, C.Harris 1, E.Dumervil 1, R.Ayers 1, B.Colquitt 1, R.Moore 1, Q.Carter 1, L.Ball 1, B.Bunkley 1,

2010 - J.Walton 1, M.Haggan 1, K.Vickerson 1, E.Decker 1, J.Mays 1, W.Woodyard 1, D.Williams 1, N.Jones 1, S.Thompson 1

2009 - R.Ayers 1, D.Williams 1, E.Royal 1

Special Teams:

Delay Of Game – 5 yards

Most of the Broncos Delay of Game penalties are intentional. Bad Delay of Game penalties could be labeled "The Tim Tebow Factor". Tebow was penalized 8 times in 2011, and they were all for the same reason. Bad clock management.

B. Colquitt intentionally uses the penalty to get a bit more room for his big leg to punt in. Here are the Broncos biggest offenders during the past 5 years:

2013 - B.Colquitt 3, P.Manning 1

2012 - B.Colquitt 2,

2011 - T.Tebow 8, B.Colquitt 4

2010 - K.Orton 5

2009 - K.Moreno 1, M.Berger 1, K.Orton 1

I'd like to see many more of the "good versions" of these penalties this year, because to me at least, it will mean that this team is playing with a "fire in the belly" – "A mean streak" - A greater desire to "make a statement" to the other team. What do you think?
