Broncos sign seventh round pick LB Corey Nelson

Justin Edmonds

The Denver Broncos have signed rookie Linebacker Corey Nelson to a contract.

The Broncos signed their first 2014 NFL Draft pick today. That player being seventh round pick, Linebacker Corey Nelson.

Terms of the deals have not been released, but should trickle in any moment now.

Nelson's 2013 season at Oklahoma was cut short by injury. Nelson suffered a partially torn pectoral muscle early in the season, but he still managed to total 27 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, four pass breakups and an interception that he returned for a touchdown that season.

Nelson had a very good 2012 campaign. He was an Academic All-Big 12 second-team member in 2012 and honorable mention All-Big 12 honoree in 2011. During his career at Oklahoma Nelson totaled 153 total tackles in his career, including 17.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

"I have a knack for finding the ball. Explosive, fast, can run sideline to sideline, pretty strong," Nelson said on his first conference call with the Denver media. "And I would say covering and playing inside the box, I can do both of those well since I played in two separate defenses at Oklahoma."

Corey Nelson looks to compete for a roster spot at the weak-side linebacker spot, and on special teams. Nelson has the skill set to fit in as a coverage linebacker in Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio's defensive system.
