Worth the Investment - Cody Latimer

I don't normally write during the offseason, but the overwhelming reviews day-in-day-out regarding our second round pick has been too much to be left unmentioned. Denver traded away their second-rounder (No. 63), fifth-rounder (No. 171) and a 2015 fourth-rounder to the 49ers in exchange for San Francisco's second-rounder (Which turned out to be Cody Latimer at No. 56) and a seventh-rounder (No. 242). I had no idea who the kid was so I was neither excited nor disappointed in the pick. I just thought it was a little early to pick a WR on a WR rich team. All I heard was we traded away a few picks to move up which put even more responsibility on the rookie to perform. I just had to have faith in the front office for making the right pick.

So far, from what I've been hearing, it was a wise investment. It seems like he's beating someone DEEP at every single practice, including our first round pick more than I'd like to hear. It's a double edged sword, our 2nd round pick is constantly beating our 1st rounder. Kind of hard to get too excited at the sound of that. There have been mixed reviews regarding Bradley Roby in terms of play and more disappointingly, attitude. That's just not the case for Cody. Apparently he's got his head on straight and has been more than you can ask for as a rookie. Consistently staying after practice with Peyton Manning to improve his game. I'm not in Denver(for now) so I don't get as much of a feel for the new players until the live bullets start, but to the remote fan he's a stud in the making. Another possible homerun pick by the Duke.

Many proclaimed that we actually upgraded our passing game by letting Decker and his 1288 yards along with 11 TDs walk in free agency along with his magical disappearing act in the biggest game. Everyone thinks it is Emmanuel Sanders that is the upgrade overlooking the possible contributions of our newest rookie weapon. What's not to love about the kids measureables and attitude? All I'll say is we DEFINITELY won't be missing Decker one bit. I don't see how this offense wouldn't actually be better this time around. It's unbelievable to even fathom the greatest offense in NFL history to actually upgrade over the offseason.

Cody Latimer is my most intriguing pickup in the draft at this point. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Roby is a bad pick. I think it was the right pick at the right time. Sure he gets beat in practice, but I hear he is also quick to rebound from those mistakes. I just don't like hearing that he blew off Chris Harris Jr. when he was being given some pointers. Cody on the other hand has steadily been improving and is constantly in the notes of the beat writers attending practice. What really pushed me over the edge to write a post is the newest information I've come across. Now I hear that he actually sought out our special teams coordinator, Jeff Rodgers, EARLY and asked to be a part of the unit. How many "diva" receivers would even consider playing special teams. Cody actually played on the kickoff unit in college. Shows his toughness if you ask me. Soon we'll hear about how he set a Super Bowl record with a separated shoulder too. "I just feel like the more you can do, the better it is," Latimer said. "I think I can do it with a little work." All the things I want to hear from our young prospect. Good luck to the youngin. I'll be paying close attention in these preseason games.

And in closing, when was the last time we heard of a rookie WR come into camp and dominate like we've been hearing of Cody? Demaryius didn't get this much press. Nor did Decker. I remember hearing about Brandon Marshall as a rookie, but not as consistently. The sugar on top is that our defense is actually supposed to be pretty good this year. Oh, and he's still nursing a bad foot. I'll leave it at that.

Go Broncos!
