How Much Of Elway's Presser Was Coach Speak?

images.0.jpeg

I took the time to transcribe (from Elway's latest press release) some very interesting responses that John Elway gave regarding the status of Peyton Manning's future as a Denver Bronco. I believe that there were some eye opening items, both in what was said, and also in what was omitted!

The highlighted areas were extremely interesting.

Q, "John last week you said that [PM] was going to be involved in the process of finding a new HC, how much of that actually was the case, and now just [8 or 10] days later, do you feel better about knowing where [PM] is at or if he is going to come back?"

Boom! This guy doesn't mess around folks!

JE; "I told you a week ago [that] I'm not talking about to [PM] about what his plans are, because I don't think he's ready to talk about that.... He may think he is, but I just think that the more time that he has to get away the better chance he has [of making] the best decision."

That sounded to me like John wasn't about to LET PM make a snap decision about next year even if he wanted to.

"I will say this, I talked to [PM] Saturday and kind of gave him an update, said we're going down to talk to Gary on Sunday, and It's been a whirlwind since then, but I also want to emphasize here, there are 52 other guys that we have to worry about here, and I think that, you know we win this thing as a team..."

"and so, I want to emphasis the fact that, sure we do want Peyton's input and I do understand Peyton's side of it, what he want's to do and all that, but it really is too that,

And here we go again with John stressing this point!

"There's 52 other guys on this roster (Oswieler is one of those ;o) and 10 on the practice squad (Dysert is one of those ;o) and now guys that we've signed to futures contracts, and you know, "

"those guys are really really important too, and I think this organization's important, & so my job again as I say... "

"I want to try to do everything I can to help [PM] in his decision.."

'but it's also very important that we take care of those other guys that are under contract that are on this football team because they're just as important! "

That was the most telling of all the combinations of points he made.

Later John did a good job of side stepping the same guy who asked that question, with another Q involving [PM] and him coming back etc. & John said they have to be careful in their off season involvement with [PM] due to league rules,

And then he said this:

"I'm going to be a good listener to Peyton, I want to be a listener, and so if he asks questions then I'm going to answer questions for him, and hopefully that will help him to come to the best decision for him...

"The bottom line is, I don't think PM needs to know if we want him or not, I mean PM needs to figure out what he can do, what's best for him, and what best for this team, and the big picture of his life", ...

Wow, there are several ways you could read that statement.

"I mean, it's a big step. As I, when I retired, the first 95% of decisions of whether your going to retire or not, that's the easy part. The last 5% is the hardest step because that's actually the step where you're saying, 'I'm not playing what I love to play any more, and I can't do this any more'".

"So, you get 95% there... [but] that final step, when you step across and say I'm retiring, that is a big step."

It really sounds to me like John is trying to "help" PM to make the decision to retire, just like he tried to "help" Champ make that decision. Of course, Champ had to find out from the rest of the league that it was time. He didn't trust Elway's wisdom in the matter.

I wonder how this will play out. I wonder if JE will 'recommend' that PM retire, and indicate to him that the Broncos are 'going in a different direction'? If he does, I wonder if PM will decide to check the rest of the league to see if another team want's his services.

How embarrassing would it be if, like Champ, he got beat out in training camp by a young mobile QB? What do you think will happen?
