How I became a Broncos Fan, Jan. 1, 1978

I was at a family party on New Year's Day, 1978 in St. Louis. The game between the Broncos and Raiders was on TV and the whole gathering was watching the game. A game of "squares" was going on and I had several of the squares bought for me by my grandpa. A great game ensued and I won $25 because of the Broncos scoring. As an 8 year old in 1978 I thought I was rich! I went out and bought a Broncos hat and shirt because they were playing the Dallas Cowboys in the Superbowl.

I got to go to another football party and root for my new team. The hated Cowboys beat my Orange Crush as we all know 27-10 but I was hooked. Our family then got transferred (military) to Albuquerque, NM. The games on Sunday (back then you got an 11am game and a 2pm game, Mountain Time) were mostly the now hated Cowboys early and my Broncos late. I loved Sunday afternoons. Putting that shirt and hat on and listening to Dick Enberg and Merlin Olson call Bronco games. Steve Foley, Rick Upchurch, Haven Moses, Riley Odoms, Randy Gradishar, Tom Jackson. The Broncos of my youth.

It kinda grew to a "slight obsession" I like to call it. Through the years I have enjoyed many family gatherings watching the Broncos with all the ups and downs. Now almost 40 years after that first Broncos game on New Year's Day, I still look forward to watching my team. Still partial to those Sunday afternoon games, especially when they are in Denver. Go Broncos!
