Tales From Across The Pond

Mark and Kev's Most Excellent Adventure

Day 2

Central Time Zone

In yesterdays post I forgot to mention the video screen image that the Chicago Bears used to get the crowd to make some noise on 3rd downs. It was a cadence chant of "Lets Go Bears" that was repeated over and over, while showing the image of a bear pounding down on a door that lay across John Candy's body. This image was taken from the film"The Great Outdoors". It was hilarious to watch and really got the crowd going.

Woke up at 06:00 and felt fully rested. I would have liked to sleep later but I think that my body is still on UK time.

I tried to use the time productively by writing my fan post , Tales From Across The Pond, which I published this afternoon, but I experienced a few technical difficulties in accessing the hotel wireless internet connection. I did type up the document in word so  that I could use the time productively, but failed to execute cutting and pasting it, to my post, hence the bold print.

Went down and had breakfast about 0900. It was lovely, but I would have to see the size of the eggs they used for my 2 eggs scrambled because it was extra large. I had about 3 cups of coffee. I think that it will take a while for me to get used to American coffee because it tastes so different to European coffee. Overall I was very pleased with my meal and I particularly loved the crispy bacon. We don't seem to get that in the UK anymore.

We decided to have a touristy day and headed back over to Soldier Field to get the touristy photos. Our first imediate impression was that it was a lot coldernow than it had been during the game. Soldier Field is not an aesthetically pleasing ground. The two stands down the side line do not go together and look as though someone has taken two separate stadia and put them together to make one. However, the exterior of the original Soldier Field that still surrounds the stadium is very beautiful. It is made from a light coloured stone and is reminiscent of the colloseum in Rome because of the Doric Columns. It is spectacular to look at and overwhelms you with its size. I do have photographs of this, but have not yet mastered the technical skill to post them. I would definately advise and recommend a visit. We thought that it had the same majesty as the Twin Towers of the old Wembley Stadium in London.

We then took a walk along the lake front. I know this should normally only be undertaken by romantic couples, but I really enjoy looking at panoramic views and I was not disappointed, looking at Downtown across the lake from East Solidarity Drive was stunning. All of the skyscrapers were wearing their blankets because of the low cloud cover (or mist) and it looked just like it does in the professional photos. We then walked through Grant Park and headed for the Loop. I am not sure if we were mad but I think we must have walked about 7 miles in total.

I like the cleanliness of Chicago and the big wide streets. It kind of reminds of mainland European cities, particularly Paris and Lyons which have wide boulevards. However, I think that crossing the road will probably kill me before I go home. Not only do I look the wrong way, but I makethe wrong decisions on when to walk and when to wait. I am a fairly impatient man and back in London I will cross the road when traffic appears to be gridlocked or some distance away. Here the drivers appear to take great delight in speeding up to hit the pedestrian. I will have to learn patience and wait for the flashing white man to tell me to cross.

We fancied a slice of Pizza for lunch but after n hour of walking around we couldn't find anywhere that sold it. I know that we must be really bad not to find pizza in the Loop, but the hungrier we got, the angrier we became. Of course the obvious thing to do woul dhave been to ask someone for directions, but being men we will never do that. We finally settled on Ada's Famous Deli on South Wabash Street. We had a cream of broccoli soup and a Baja sandwich. The food was excellent value, but thesandwich was overfilled. I think I will have to get used to this. The staff were welcoming and friendly and we both felt that the food was value for money. We did not know about the City Tax which basically adds 10% to the published price. This would be illegal in the UK and will take some getting used to. I do understand that this tax helps keep Chicago the clean and excellent placde that it is and I don't resent having to pay it, I just wish that it was included in the publishjed price. We headed back to the hotel for an hour to get cleaned up and give me a chance to email my girlfriend and put my post on MHR.

We had difficulty in deciding whether there are more Starbucks, McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts in Chicago, but they appear to be on every block. We did have a few Starbucks coffees and I don't think my body has ever contained this much caffeine in it. Maybe thats why I'm buzzing?

In the afternoon we went shopping on the Majestic Mile. I brought a few Christmas gifts and gambled on some clothes for my girlfriend. I do hope they fit, but if they don't then please let it be it is because they are too small and not too big! This area compares very well with Oxford Street and Regents Street in London and the Champs Elysees in Paris. I spent too much money again and also forgot about the 10% local tax. It's getting expensive for me, but it is worth every penny.

About 17:30 we finally head for a bar and the first beer of the day. Our guidebook recommended the Clark Street Ale House and it was close to where we were shopping. We started off with 4 pints of Goose Island Honkers each. We were very impressed by the flavour of this beer and it compared favourably to the beers we get in England. It was probably too drinkable because the 4 pints went down very quickly indeed. We then tried a Wisconsin beer that had the world's longest name, which I can't remember (not that this had anything to do with us drinking alcohol). This beer was very hoppy and had a slight fruity aftertaste. Mark really enjoyed this beer (he is the proper beer drinker, I mainly drink lager in the UK) but it was too strong in flavour for me. We still had 2 pints each of this! The last beer that we tried was the house Pale Ale. This was not as light in colour as I am used to in a Pale Ale, but Mark assured me that it was of the highest qualityand we had another 2 pints each. At this point I started to lose any sense of objectivity and we decided it was for the best to try and get soemthing to eat.

We headed to Joe's Crab Shack on Grand, but decided that our legs could not take anymore walking and took a cab. This decision not to walk was probably alcohol inspired because I think we would still be walking around Chicago looking for the restaurant if we had not taken the cab. We had 18 oysters for starters. They were very tasty but had a bit if shell in them from where they had been shucked. This is not a criticism because I almost chopped my hand off when I tried it at home. We were back on the Goose Island Honkers for our alcoholic drink, but also imbibed large quantities of water to try and counteract the effects. For my main I had the blackened Mahi, which I can highly recommend. The portion size was normal which was a relief to me. Mark had crab cakes and he "waxed lyrical" about how great they were. The meal was excellent value for money at $115 and it did have the Titans@ Texans showing, but I can't remember too much of the game. This was because of a combination of alcohol, conversation and eating, but I will leave it to you to decide on the proportions of responsibility. After the meal we headed back to the hotel for a long deserved sleep. Tomorrow we will visit some of the establishments recommended by the MHR faithful on my first post asking for advice.

I hope you get a sense of the pleasure and excitement I am feeling on this journey to America. I feel like a child on their first trip into the city. Everything is a new experience, including taking a bus ride, where I had my face pressed against the glass, gawping at the sites. My only regret is that I waited until I was 38 to make this journey. I will endeavour to make my next post briefer, but my enthusiasm for the adventure is too great, Excellent!

Why are we freaking out guys?

Ok, I'm generally just a reader, but i decided to create an account simply to get something off my chest, and its not a rant about how disappointed or ticked off i am. This is quite the opposite actually.  Yes, im just as heartbroken by the losses as all of you. If you need proof just ask my girlfriend. I curse and yell non sensical profanities all game long, and then the anger quickly turns to depression (i know, its sad. Get a life right?) but i am very upset by the way you guys are freaking out! Yes i think we can play better, and yes its disappointing, but lets be rational and keep things in perspectinve.

This team is a work in progress, but one that can garner success along the way. Thats pretty awesome, and we're a bit lucky as fans considering all the other teams that are a "work in progress". We're the type of team that is good and competitive (despite the deceptive and misleading scores of the last 4 games), but lacks the depth and talent to win games when we make too many mistakes. I know, i know. They should never fumble, never throw an int, never commit a costly penalty, and certainly never lose a ball game. But this is the NFL my friends, and that stuff happens to the best of teams. The defense is paid too. The difference is, the elite teams are strong enough to battle back despite the mistakes. Thats what makes them elite, and frankly we're not there yet. I do however believe that we will be within a year or two. We're certainly heading in the right direction anyway, and we've got a lot of cap room, draft picks, and talent on our team to work with. My guess is that next year we are not only a playoff contender, but also a force to be reckoned with come december. So we lost a few games. BIG DEAL!!!

McDaniels has repeatedly said that we weren't rebuilding. We're trying to win now, and he believed that we could. And though we've had a bit of slide, i still don't think its a stretch to say we're a solid team when we play cohesively as a team. However, we have to play pretty close to mistake free, and we haven't even come close to that this season, let alone the last four games. I think that McDanies has done an excellent job as HC so far, but he too can improve. My biggest issues with him have been quick, and not so good challenges throughout the season. We have guys in the booth with tv feeds, and rewind for a reason. My biggest problem this season was leaving Orton in during crap time on sunday. IMO, he should've been pulled when it was 20-3, and seemingly out of reach. What a great time to let Simms try to regain some confidence, or let Brandstater get his feet wet. (though im more opposed to the latter) Either way, i think it was absolutely ridiculous to leave Orton, who was deemed unready to start due to injury, and who is a vital part of our offense, in the game during junk time, further increasing his chance of worsening his already injured ankle. I find it hard to understand what he was thinking by doing that, and i dont think its excusable but I still have faith in him as a coach, and i think he will be here a long time, perhaps even longer than shanny, and bring this organization great sucess.

Bottom line, there's a lot to look forward to as a Denver Broncos fan, and i for one am ecstatic about the future (that includes the remainder of this season, which many of you have already deemed "over"). We will bounce back, and we will play better. Whether or not that translates into a W remains to be seen, but thats what makes this game so amazing.

In closing, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your work, and time spent on this site. Not just Guru and the gang, but also all of you who post here on a regular basis. I am on this site every single day, without fail, and its a godsend for those who bleed orange and blue, or on occasion brown and yellow.... =) So Thank You MHR!

Gasp...The First Broncos Mock Draft of the Year!  Maybe...

For me, the NFL Draft is never too far away.  If I have said it once, I have said it dozens of times.  This is the single greatest event of the sports year in my opinion, and it's one of the most fun to speculate on.

The Denver Broncos' recent struggles have given way to lofty criticism, and they have exposed various obvious weaknesses on the team as well.  As of now, this team has five draft picks.  They own the rights to Chicago's first round pick, and they traded away their own to the Seattle Seahawks.

If the season ended today, the Broncos would have the 11th overall pick in the draft, which is the same pick they took Jay Cutler with back in 2006.

I firmly believe at this point that the Broncos need to look to an elite quarterback prospect with this pick, and this is the perfect year to do so.  This year's quarterback class is very talented at the top end, featuring four or five legitimate potential first round picks.

As it stands, the teams that could potentially be looking for a quarterback who would theoretically be picking ahead of the Broncos are the St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, and the Washington Redskins.

To get a moderately accurate idea of what the Broncos could be looking at in terms of prospects, let's mock the draft until the proverbial 11th overall pick, in which the Broncos will be selecting in this case.

1.  Cleveland Browns:  Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee

2.  St. Louis Rams:  Jake Locker, Quarterback, Washington

3.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers:  Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska

4.  Detroit Lions:  Gerald McCoy, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma

5.  Buffalo Bills:  Russell Okung, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State

6.  Kansas City Chiefs:  Rolando McClain, Middle Linebacker, Alabama

7.  Oakland Raiders:  Carlos Dunlap, Defensive Lineman, Florida

8.  Seattle Seahawks:  Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Notre Dame

9.  Washington Redskins:  Taylor Mays, Safety, USC

10.  Tennessee Titans:  Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida

The Denver Broncos are now on the clock.

A lot of really good prospects off the board, and quite a few of which the Broncos will be keeping a close eye on come draft day.  Still, this draft is extremely deep at almost every position, and the Broncos need to take advantage.  Here are some of the top available prospects they could be looking at in this situation.

  • WR Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State
  • RB C.J. Spiller, Clemson
  • DE Derrick Morgan, Georgia Tech
  • OLB Navorro Bowman, Penn State
  • QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

Ultimately, general manager Brian Xanders and Josh McDaniels have the final call of which player is picked.  McDaniels has not been known to be part of a team which selects a quarterback very high, but the only constant in this world is change.

McDaniels and the Patriots never picked a quarterback very high, but they never really had to either.  Drew Bledsoe was the quarterback of the team early in the 2000's, and he was a former first overall pick.  He was replaced by Tom Brady, who is a once in a lifetime gem found late in the sixth round.

The Broncos picked quarterback Tom Brandstater in the sixth round in 2009, but it's unhealthy at best to assume he is the long-term answer at the position.  He seems to have the tools to potentially excel at this level, but you can't really bank on it.

Thus, this pick is an absolute no-brainer.

With the 11th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select...Sam Bradford, quarterback from Oklahoma University .

I love the sound of that, and Broncos fans would too.  Bradford has a great head on his shoulders, and because he suffered a season-ending injury this season, he could wind up as the biggest steal of this draft.

Bradford is a near perfect fit for the Broncos' offense.  He is the most accurate quarterback in the draft with above average arm strength, and he is a great leader on and off the field.

The Broncos likely will part ways with Chris Simms after this season, and if the price is reasonable they could retain Kyle Orton.  In fact, they probably should.  That way, Orton could be good insurance in case Bradford's development is slow, or if the Broncos simply do not want to start a rookie quarterback.  Denver would then hold three quarterbacks in Bradford, Orton, and Brandstater.

After this pick, the Broncos have to wait a little while to select again.  They would be in line for a mid-late second round pick with their 6-4 record.  As it stands, that pick would fall somewhere in the early 50's, and right now at exactly 51st.

Using Scout's Inc.'s rankings, the top available prospects are:

  • G Jon Asamoah, Illinois
  • TE Aaron Hernandez, Florida
  • DE/OLB Jerry Hughes, TCU
  • G Mike Iupati, Idaho
  • RB Joe McKnight, USC
  • DE Corey Wootton, Northwestern

At this point, there is no real standout prospect the Broncos have to have.  A wise decision here would be to trade down for a second, fourth, and sixth round pick.

Let's say the Broncos move down ten spots, to the bottom of the second round.  They have acquired an extra fourth and sixth round pick to potentially maneuver again if they wish.

In this case, the Broncos still get the guy I would have taken with the 51st pick.

With the 61st pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select...Corey Wootton, Defensive End, Northwestern.

This is a player I really like for the next level.  He has outstanding size for a defensive lineman at 6'7" 280 pounds, and he could be a good five-technique prospect.  The Broncos are a little thin on depth and youth at the defensive end position, and Wootton would be an ideal addition at this point in the draft.

The Broncos' next pick would come a little way past the middle of the third round, somewhere around the 83rd overall selection.

This pick may be a bit of wishful thinking on my part, but I'm going to go for it.  Scout's Inc. rates this kid as the 75th best prospect in the draft, but the one thing I know about the NFL Draft is that the 75th best prospect could go in the first round, and the 10th best prospect can sometimes fall to the third.

With the 83rd pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select...Vince Oghobaase, Defensive Lineman, Duke.

What in the world?  A Duke football player?

You heard it here first.  Vince Oghobaase is a very solid defensive lienman who is athletic enough to play inside in a 4-3 or as a five-technique in the 3-4.  He and Wootton would give the Broncos a good pair of young defensive linemen with great athleticism, versatility, and intelligence, something which is valued very highly by this coaching staff.

In the fourth round, the Broncos have, as this situation has played out in this mock draft, two picks.  This is a place where they can certainly address a wide variety of areas.

After taking their quarterback of the future and solidifying their defensive front, the Broncos can now focus on other areas of the team.

With their two fourth round picks, I like the Broncos to take Florida State safety Myron Rolle and Oregon cornerback Walter Thurmond .

Myron Rolle is a very intriguing prospect to me.  He was a top prospect for the Seminoles coming out of high school, and showed why in his first three years at Florida State.

He graduated from FSU in 2009 and accepted a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University, and has been studying there for what would have been his senior season at Florida State.  According to Rolle, he planned on maintaining football shape in his time in England, and he would return to the United States for the NFL Scouting Combine and a career in the NFL.

This is a man who has very lofty goals and dreams, and one who is inspiring.  He gave up millions of dollars in the NFL to research in England a potential cure for cancer.  He is an outstanding student who would have an opportunity to learn from the very best in Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey.

Thurmond is a very underrated prospect.  He has been a four year starter for the Ducks and he will go later in the draft than he should because of a knee injury he suffered earlier this season.  He is a very good tackler and has 12 career interceptions, and when he gets the ball he certainly knows what to do with it, scoring six career touchdowns.

In the sixth round, I think the Broncos will turn back to the offensive side of the ball.

Since they have two picks in this projected situation, they have a lot of flexibility in the earlier rounds.

With their first sixth round pick, I think the Broncos should take Iowa tight end Anthony Moeaki.

Moeaki has been oft-injured in his Iowa career, but head coach Kirk Ferentz calls him, "The best tight end I have ever coached."  Those are some high praises considering Dallas Clark once roamed Kinnick Stadium.

Moeaki is undoubtedly a complete tight end.  He could very well go higher than the sixth round, and he probably should simply based on his skill set.  His biggest asset is his ability to run block, which often goes unnoticed.  That being said, he is also a very good pass receiver.  He does not have great speed, but he finds a way to get open.

The need for a tight end could come up if the Broncos lose Tony Scheffler to free agency.

With their other sixth round pick, I think the Broncos need to address the center position.  I think the best senior center prospect in the draft is Baylor's Justin Walton, and the Broncos could go after him.  Walton has good size for the center position, and would help the Broncos greatly with inside pass protection which is really lacking at the moment.

To recap, here are my projected draft selections at the moment if this situation were ever to play out.

  1. Sam Bradford, Quarterback, Oklahoma
  2. Corey Wootton, Defensive End, Northwestern
  3. Vince Oghobaase, Defensive End, Duke
  4. Myron Rolle, Safety, Florida State
  5. Walter Thurmond, Cornerback, Oregon
  6. Tony Moeaki, Tight End, Iowa
  7. Justin Walton, Center, Baylor

I think this would be a very solid draft for the Broncos.  Not only do they get their quarterback of the future, they solidify their defensive front as well as add much needed depth, speed, and youth to their secondary.

Obviously, this is all just my speculation and maybe a little bit of wishful thinking.  The holiday season will do that for a guy.

Brett Kern, the difference maker?

The post regarding Ryan Bean from chopperpilot got me thinking last week.  Maybe he was the huge difference maker that the team had been lacking.  Nope, turns out he wasn't.  So who was it then?  Who else are we missing?  Tonight it hit me when I saw a familiar foot.  Brett Kern!  When the Broncos released him they were 6-0, the Titans?  0-6.  Since then the Titans have won four straight and the Broncos...nevermind.  I don't really think Brett Kern is a difference maker, but it's pretty funny.  That punter sure knows how to win.

Rookie Odds

The odds of any draft pick making an NFL career is not that great. See this article from Bleacherreport

My opinion? For what its worth:

Round 1, 12 overall — Knowshon Moreno — He is doing just fine. He needs to work on not fumbling the ball, but he has improved considerably. He will have a good career.

Round 1, 18 overall — Robert Ayers — He has contributed to this team. Sitting out one game is not cause for alarm.

Round 2, 37 overall — Alphonso Smith — A controversial pick, he will always be under the microscope. He showed early flashes of greatness and has not been the same player after he injured his ankle. It is not cause for great alarm when Ty Law, a proven multiple award-winning veteran, comes in to play. CB’s generally take more time to become impact players.

Round 2, 48 overall — Darcel McBath — Coming along nicely.

Round 2, 64 overall — Richard Quinn — His day will come if we just wait awhile.

Round 4, 114 overall — David Bruton — Coming along nicely.

Round 4, 132 overall — Seth Olsen — I have not seen much from him so I do not have an opinion.

Round 5, 141 overall — Kenny McKinley — His early career has not been good. He is a project, imo.

Round 6, 174 overall — Tom Brandstater — He looked good in the preseason.

Round 7 – 225 overall – Blake Schlueter — I’m glad we got rid of him.

CFA – Chris Baker – He made the active roster and is being brought along. While I would like to see him get more playing time, I believe he will get playing time when he is ready.

CFA – Marquez Branson – TE – too early to tell but he is on the practice squad.

CFA – Tony Carter – CB – too early to tell but he is on the practice squad. Remember though that he was kept on the squad when the team released Jack Williams .

CFA – Mitch Erickson – G – too early to tell but he is on the practice squad. But he was drafted in ’08, so it is time for him to prove himself. (much like Carlton Powell).

CFA – Kelly Braxton – LB – too early to tell but he is on the practice squad.

CFA – Everette Pedescleaux – too early to tell but he is on the practice squad injured list.

Other additions that I consider much like the draft:

Coach McDaniels – I give him a B+ thus far
Coach Nolan – I give him a B+ thus far
Coach Priefer – F (we need to dump him)
Coach Barone – C
Coach Gase – C+
Coach Donatell – B+
Coach Martindale – B
Coach Phifer – B
Brian Xanders – B+

Coaching holdovers:
Coach Turner – B
Coach Dennison – C

Some will proclaim a player a “bust” in their first 8 games. Some will proclaim a player a “superstar” in their first 8 games. I believe either extreme is unwarranted unless supported by the facts. I believe Coach Priefer, for example, is a bust. I cannot think of any rookie this year on any team that is an unqualified “superstar” regardless of where they were drafted. Finally, I believe all of our draftees still on the roster are progressing nicely.

My last point is about the team. We are, in fact, a rookie team composed of veterans and rookies. This is the first year under a new coach and composed of a LOT of new players. Our midseason slump is baffling and upsetting. Yet I am behind the team 100%. GO BRONCOS!

Understanding the Wildcat:

"Over the years, young coaches who want to get their teams to throw the football have written to me to ask about the best way to get started. My professional advice never includes my personal secret - knowing the single wing."

-Lavell Edwards BYU Head Coach 1972-2000

Last season the Miami Dolphins began to run a formation called the Wildcat.  While many announcers and seeming many NFL coaches were very confused the Wildcat is based off the single wing offense, an offense almost as old as the game of American Football itself.

Some general questions and thoughts...your thoughts?

Does anyone else wonder why we don't establish some sort of tough running up the middle with Peyton Hillis?  I think if we did, it would open up those screen passes (and outside runs) McD likes to run so well.  I am so sick of seeing them get blown up at or behind the line of scrimmage.  On another note about Moreno, I like him and think he has a lot of potential, but I think at this point Buckhalter is the better back.  I understand he is a rookie and still learning but,  Correll runs stronger than Moreno who typically goes down on first contact.  I will give it to him, he has been getting stronger as the year goes on.  I think Moreno will be a great back in this league if he can learn to hold on to the ball and block better.

On another note, I heard McD say in the press conference that SD was in there nickle while we were in our two tight end set.  We didn't fool them because we were behind an needed to pass.  I cant figure out why we would be in the two tight end set in that situation to begin with?

I liked seeing Orton come into the game in the second half even though he was hurt.  He showed heart, leadership, and provided the spark we needed.

I know hind sight is 20/20 but I really don't understand why we went for an onside kick in the 3rd quarter?  By doing so, we practically handed the game over to the Chargers.

One last thing, it was nice to see us go deep against Washington.  I would like to see more of that along with some punishing runs up the middle.  I think adding those two aspects to our game plan would open up McD's playbook to run all those short passes he likes.  What do you all think?

P.S.

I have seen some post about the Broncos fans being band-wagoners.  I have always thought we have one of the best fan bases in all of pro sports.  Lets stand behind the team and be loud!
