"There is one certain way," replied the Prince [William of Orange] "by which I can be sure never to see my country's ruin, -- I will die in the last ditch."
The young and battered Denver Broncos go into Qualcomm Stadium as underdogs. They have led the division after every game this year and beat the Chargers earlier this year, but nobody will give Denver any chance of winning this game. Does Denver have a chance of winning this game? Is there any way our beloved team avoids ruin?
Join me. We will break down the game together, and then on Sunday night each of us can find his or her comfortable couch to watch the game. As one, we will all fight the good fight, and perhaps avoid having to die in the last ditch.

Denver Broncos 39 - San Diego Chargers 38 - Making The Grade
One last look at the Chargers game before moving full throttle to Week 3's Home matchup with the Saints. We'll talk much more about that, but it is time for this week's edition of "Making The Grade" where I will grade the Broncos performance from the day before. The most important "grade" is the one on the scoreboard, and for the Broncos this week it was another W. What about the players performance? Let's take a look....
| QUARTERBACK | |
B |
Jay Cutler -- 36/50 - 350 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT It was another monster performance for Cutler. He was on target all day long, and to throw 50 passes and complete 72% of them is simply amazing. I can't, however, give Cutler anything better than a B because of the Red Zone pick. That play could have easily cost the Broncos the game, had things turned out differently. These things are going to happen with a young quarterback, however, and it is his effort at making a play every time he takes a snap that enables him to make 25 good plays before he makes 1 bad one. The hope is he learns from it and doesn't repeat it. Cutler knows this, and I am confident that we won;t see many more plays like this going forward. As an offense, the Broncos are still rolling, and through two games the team has scored points on 13/19(68%) possessions, with 10/13(77%)scoring possessions resulting in touchdowns. |

So you thought week one was important? Well, it was. After all, Denver was playing a division rival (ok, ok, the division rival), it was a Monday Night Football game, and the first game of the 2008 season. Still, this week's game goes well beyond all of that.
-
Denver leads the AFC West. With a win against SD, Denver takes a commanding lead over the team many "experts" pick to represent the AFC West in the playoffs.
-
Along with NE, this is supposed to be one of the toughest games on a weak schedule. Did I say NE? They of "Bradyless" fame?
-
More than any other game this season, this game should indicate the readiness of Denver to get back to the playoffs. SD is a better team than Oakland.
While many Denver fans waited for the season to start on Monday against the hated Raiders, this is perhaps the game fans have really waited for. Monday was the game we wanted emotionaly. Monday's game was a test. Now the season really starts. This is the game where Denver answers the question, "Are we for real?" This is the game where the quest really takes off.
Let's take a look at both teams; the systems, the players, the Xs and Os, the match-ups. The last game was nice, but against a basement team. This game is against the current AFC West Champions, and we need to know what's in store for the game.

NFL Week 2 - San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos - A Primer
For all your San Diego Chargers News, check out Bolts From The Blue
The Denver Broncos (1-0) face a divisional team for the second consecutive week when they host the two-time defending AFC West champion San Diego Chargers (0-1) on Sunday in their home opener. Kickoff at INVESCO Field at Mile High is set for 2:15 p.m. MDT, and the game will be televised by CBS with Dick Enberg and Randy Cross calling the action.
Denver began its 2008 season with a 41-14 win in Oakland on Monday Night Football, scoring its second-most points in a divisional road game in franchise history. Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal registered the sixth-most receiving yards (146) by a player in his NFL debut since 1960 while quarterback Jay Cutler posted a Week 1 AFC-best 299 passing yards, two touchdown passes and a
137.3 passer rating.
Looking to snap their four-game losing streak to the Chargers, Denver faces a San Diego squad that lost its season opener at home to Carolina by a 26-24 margin. The Panthers scored the game-winning touchdown on a 14-yard, fourth-down pass as time expired.
Since 1984, the Broncos are 21-3 (.875) in home openers for the league's best record during that time. Head Coach Mike Shanahan (1995-Pres.) has guided the Broncos to a 12-1 (.923) mark in home openers and is 14-1 (.933) in those games for his NFL coaching career. The Broncos enter Sunday's game against San Diego having won their last eight home openers dating back to the 2000 season.
Through the opening week of the 2008 campaign, Royal leads all NFL players in receiving yards (146) while ranking third in the league in combined yards (185) and yards from scrimmage (155). The Broncos' offense averaged 7.5 yards per play and registered 441 yards against Oakland on Monday with those totals both placing
fourth in the NFL for Kickoff Weekend.
Defensively, the Broncos opened the year by holding Oakland to 2-of-12 (16.7%) success on third downs, forcing the Raiders to an average third down attempt of 7.2 yards.
The Broncos lead the all-time series with the Chargers 52-43-1, and enjoy a 34-13-1 record in Denver. Only 4 points seperate the two teams over that 96 game stretch (Denver 2014 - San Diego 2010).
