2009 NFL Draft

Denver Broncos Select C Blake Schlueter, TCU

This is a smart move, even we don't see immediate dividends.

He is a bargain basement fill in at center, with the agility and quicks to make you feel confident in his upside.  His scouting report from NFLDraftcountdown:

Strengths:
Good athlete...Quick and agile...Terrific balance...Excellent mobility and range...Smart with nice awareness...Tough, aggressive and plays with a nasty demeanor...Great motor...Nice work ethic...Experienced.

Weaknesses:
Severe lack of bulk...Average strength and not real powerful...Isn't stout at the point of attack...Gets rag-dolled at times...Doesn't get a great push...Not a good fit for every team...Durability may be an issue.

Notes:
Was a three-year starter for the Horned Frogs...Named 2nd Team All-Mountain West as a senior...Was selected a team captain in 2007 and 2008...Had surgery to repair a torn labrum in 2006...Undersized but athletic pivot who could excel in a zone blocking scheme...Wowed scouts at his Pro Day workout and might have gotten himself drafted.

Denver Broncos Trade Up Yet Again to Take QB, Tom Brandstater, Fresno State

Well, looks like the #3 QB spot has been effectively filled.  I know Ted has looked at this player and will be adding his thoughts when he gets the chance, in the meantime, here is the scouting report on him from Mocking the Draft:

6'5, 225 pounds | Fresno State | Quarterback

Strengths: Brandstater certainly looks the part. He's tall with a solid frame and knows how to adjust pre-snap. Unlike most current college quarterbacks, he goes through his progressions nicely and often looks to the second and third receiver. Protects his receivers by placing the ball in stride. Very good timing on his throws. Throwing mechanics are sound and consistent. Excellent on short and intermediate routes. According to reports, Brandstater was the most impressive quarterback throwing at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Weaknesses: In the pocket, Brandstater is a statue. He lacks any mobility and struggles to avoid sacks. If he's on the move, Brandstater has problems adjusting and releasing the ball. Is not especially poised in the pocket and will force bad throws, which turn into interceptions. Lets the long ball sail too often.

Final word: Brandstater showed intelligence and resolve at Fresno State after playing for four offensive coordinators in four years. Because of that, he's something of an unknown as a pro prospect. He has the size and mechanics to make it at the next level, but regressed some as a senior. He threw only 18 touchdowns, compared to 12 interceptions while completing less than 60 percent of his passes. Started 36 games, playing in 45.

Round projection: 4

Denver Broncos Trade Up Eight Spots, Select WR, Kenny McKinley, South Carolina

This is a pick Broncos fans will learn to dig, just give it a little time.  After seeing the WR board devastated in the third round, Denver waited like a crouching lion to pounce on McKinley.  they just had to knock some other teams out of the way to do it, is all.

At A Glance
Position 1: Wide Receiver Height: 6-1
Position 2:  Weight:  189
Class:  Senior Age:
Projected Round:  4th-5th  40time:  4.37
Combine/Proday Results
Bench Reps:  X Vertical:  37
20yd Split:  2.53 Broad Jump:  9'5"
10yd Split:  1.46 20yd Shuttle:  4.10
3 Cone Drill:  6.96

Pros:  Good initial quickness off the snap. Not a real physical player, but uses his hands and lateral quickness well to get a clean release off the line of scrimmage. Savvy route-runner. Good short-area burst and is a cognizant route-runner. Varies his speed and utilizes his good body control to generate separation against tight coverage. Reliable hands for the reception. Strong hands to snatch the ball out of the air. Good body control to contort in space and make the difficult reception. Knows where the sticks and sidelines are. Can take a pop and hang on. Wastes no time getting upfield after the reception. Good vision in the open field and can generate positive yards after the reception.

Cons:  Lanky, almost skinny build that could use additional mass, but not at the expense of losing speed, another area of concern. Lacks the straight-line speed to challenge deep or to break away after a short or intermediate reception. Can be caught from behind. Characterized as a tough player, but can be intimidated with a good pop early. Can get alligator arms going over the middle.

Denver Broncos select Seth Olsen, G, Iowa

The newest Bronco. Seth Olsen and his boiler!

The newest Bronco. Seth Olsen and his boiler!

The Denver Broncos made their 7th selection of the 2009 NFL Draft, targeting the offensive line by taking Seth Olsen from Iowa.  Olsen, has good size at 6-6, 305, but has had some injury concerns.  Here's a deeper look at Olsen --

Positives: Naturally large man with good weight distribution. Good initial quickness off the snap. Very good hand placement and upper-body strength. Seems to enjoy the physical hand-to-hand combat inside the trenches. Good strength to latch onto the defender, turn and either sustain his position or toss the defender onto ground for a pancake block. Underrated short-area lateral quickness and balance to hold up in pass protection. Plays with good leverage despite his height. Versatile blocker who has started at right guard, right tackle and left tackle over the past two years. Impressive week of practice at the East-West Shrine game.

Negatives: Strong and technically refined, but isn't an elite athlete. Only phone-booth quickness. Struggles adjusting in space at the second level. Lumbers after a few steps and is forced to lunge at defenders. Lacks the deep kick-step and elite lateral quickness to handle the left tackle position, though he has experience there. May struggle on the outside at right tackle.
