Rumor Mill
According to Chris Mortensen, Shanny would have cut Brandon Marshall
On Sunday NFL Countdown, Chris Mortensen just reported that Mike Shanahan would have cut Brandon Marshall following the 2008 season, had he not himself been fired. I'm not sure I believe that myself, but it certainly is an interesting peek into the state of the Broncos' locker room last season. Mortensen said that Shanny believed Marshall cost the team more games than he helped them win in 2008. Well, no matter what Marshall does today in Cincinnati, this figures to be a story that will not go away...

Your Call - Brandon Marshall for David Harris and a 3rd-Round Pick
You've heard the reports, you've seen the Tweets. The Broncos have reportedly let the New York Jets know that any deal for Brandon Marshall would require the inclusion of ILB David Harris. Harris, a former 2nd-round pick from Michigan, has been a solid starter for the Jets and would instantly unseat Andra Davis as the inside backer next to D.J. Williams. The Broncos defense would get younger and more athletic.
The reports have also said the deal could include a 3rd-round pick as well, providing the Broncos the chance to acquire more talent in the 2010 Draft.
The downside? Trading a dynamic young Wide Receiver who could be entering the prime of his career. Of course, we all know the baggage. Brandon Marshall has practiced just a handful of times since the Pro Bowl in February and admittedly has no clue what is going on in the playbook. Even if Marshall changes his attitude and returns this weekend a new man, how long would it be before he could contribute?
He is coming off two different off-seasons of serious injuries and there is all of the off-field risk as well. Did I mention he likely wants a new contract somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 years / $50 million??
All of those things have to be accounted for, so I ask you Broncos Country -

D.J. Williams on the move again??
An interesting tid-bit from Pro Football Weekly(a must have for football junkies like me...) --
One of the repercussions of Denver’s transition to a 3-4 defense is yet another change of positions for D.J. Williams, who has not played at the same spot in back-to-back seasons since 2004-05. Sources say having Williams, who is athletic enough to play inside or outside in a 3-4, gives the Broncos some flexibility in the draft and free agency. If the team decides to use an early pick on a linebacker, it won’t have to stew over whether to take someone who can play inside or outside. Instead, Denver can take the one they deem the best available, regardless of position, and then alter Williams’ position accordingly. The constant changes have made things more challenging for Williams, who recently underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, but he has played well no matter where he lines up and he doesn’t seem shaken by it.
Not a complete shock, but an interesting look at what the Broncos might be thinking. Without really, really looking at the tape, Williams isn't a "great" fit at any position in a true 3-4. Perhaps that is because he hasn't been asked to, and as WIlliams has shown us in the past, he is talented enough to play anywhere.

John Lynch Visiting With Patriots
John Lynch was looking for a different situation. He may have found it with a team that hasn't lost a regular season game in a year and a half. Lynch is in New England, visiting with the Patriots about an opening the Patriots at safety --
The Patriots are hosting free-agent safety John Lynch on a visit at Gillette Stadium today.
The 36-year-old Lynch, a nine-time Pro Bowler and one of the grittier, more durable safeties to play in the NFL, was released by the Broncos on Aug. 1.
This isn’t the first time the Patriots have expressed an interest in Lynch.
When Lynch was a free agent in 2004, the Patriots visited with him before he signed with the Broncos.
The potential addition of Lynch could lessen the blow of losing Tank Williams to a season-ending knee injury.
That would be one aging safety crew, with Lynch and Rodney Harrison, though last season's 1st round pick Brandon Meriweather is in play for a roster spot as well.
While I wasn't crushed by Lynch's departure, this is the type of shrewd move the Patriots have become known for. Whether it works or not is another question.

Broncos Look To Bring In Koutouvides
It won't be much fun to type it over and over in 2008, but the Broncos have more important things to worry about than my Carpal Tunnel. Should Niko Koutouvides actually get to the airport and on a plane out of Tampa before being signed, his next likely stop would be in Denver --
The Broncos are using the free-agent market this offseason to pursue linebackers, safeties, defensive linemen and receivers who are proven special team contributors while awaiting the opportunity to break through the starting lineup.
The team also is interested in Green Bay free-agent Tracy White, who backed up A.J. Hawk the past two seasons at strongside linebacker.
If playing time is a major factor for Koutouvides, he might have a better chance with the Broncos, who are open to the idea of shifting middle linebacker D.J. Williams to the outside.
It is now obvious that what we heard about the Broncos plan heading into Free Agency was the truth. Solid B-type players that won't command top dollar.....

The MHR Rumor Pit -- Broncos In 'Three-Way'???
ProFootball Talk has reported the Broncos could be involved in the three-way deal once the trade embargo is lifted --
As the 2008 league year quickly approaches, there's talk of a possible three-way trade.
We're told that the Jets, Lions, and Broncos are talking about a deal that would send Detroit defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to New York, Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Broncos, and Denver cornerback Dominique Foxworth and a second-round pick to the Lions.
The Lions also are looking at a trade for Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
As far as the Broncos are concerned, that deal would be Foxy for Robertson. Would you do it?? I think I would, I really do....

With Losing Comes The Inevitable Rumor Mill -- Shanny To Falcons??
ProFootballTalk.com is not one of my favorite sites. I'm just being honest. For the most part, their "rumor mill" seems nothing more than uneducated guessing. I could sit here and do that, but what's the point. Mike Florio and the boys have gotten the ear of some of those in the MSM, however, and Florio himself has even written for the 'darkside'.
That said, I tend to leave it alone, until a rumor involving a particular Head Coach, who already has a job, pops up on PFT. This was posted yesterday afternoon --
As the rumor/scuttlebutt goes, Shanahan would run the show in Atlanta, as the head coach and de facto G.M.
Though he's still under contract with the Broncos, the thinking is that owner Pat Bowlen might be happy to let him leave, given the struggles of the team in 2007.
Another name that has emerged in Atlanta is Chiefs V.P. of player personnel Bill Kuharich. It's possible that both Shanahan and Kuharich could join the Falcons, with Kuharich serving as the G.M. but Shanahan calling the shots.
First off, if a 'League Source' is the one who let Florio know, maybe this 'League Source' should remind that Falcons that any type of discussions like this, should they become anything more than internal dialog, are considered tampering, something taken very, very seriously in the League.
Second, let's take a minute to look at the rumor. Shanahan to the Falcons. Now, I will admit that this season has been extremely tough on Shanahan, as it has on all of us. But why leave Denver to go to what might be the worst situation in football?? The Falcons have zero talent. NONE. A look up and down their roster shows a team that may not be competitive again for 3-5 years. Is Denver that far away??
Next, the owner involved, Arthur Blank, is highly respected in League circles. He has not deserved the fate he has been dealt, his only fault being he has been too loyal at times. Why would Blank do to Pat Bowlen what so many have done to him? I just don't think Blank would do it. Plain and simple.
Now, could there be a bit of truth to the rumor that Bowlen is growing weary of the Shanahan-run Broncos? I think so. Pat Bowlen is, at his core, a business-man. A highly-successful businessman. The Broncos are a business, right now, that simply is not performing. Bowlen will not take this lying down and will see to it that things get turned around. Do I think Bowlen wants to dump Shanahan? No. Do I think the reigns might get pulled back a bit. Definitely. How Shanny responds to that could go a long way towards determining his future in Denver. We need look no further than Mike Holmgren in Seattle. When the Personnel responsibilities were removed from Holmgren's title there was a lot of speculation that he would leave. He did not. Focusing solely on coaching, the Seahawks improved immediately on the field and were in the Super Bowl a short time after.
There will be alot of time to discuss what comes next for the Broncos. The rumor mill, however, has already started. Get used to it, rumors are a nasty side-effect of losing.

***RUMOR***Henry To Be Suspended
A source has told me that Travis Henry will lose his appeal and be suspended for a year for failing a drug test earlier this year. This announcement could come as early as tomorrow, and despite Henry's attempt to appeal the positive test with Lie Detector and Hair Follicle tests, the NFL's powers that be have no interest in some things and consider their policy fair and just.
This is just a rumor, though the source is solid...
