Packers @ Broncos -- Monday Night Open Thread -- Fourth Quarter

     @

Date: Monday, October 29, 2007

Time: 6:00 p.m. MST

Teams: Green Bay Packers (5-1) at Denver Broncos (3-3)

Location: Invesco Field @ MileHigh - Denver, CO

Packers Seventh Drive cont.....

--The Packers line up near mid-field to start the 2nd half.  The Broncos season could hang in the balance of the next 15 minutes... --Does this defense ever shift before the snap?? They get in position, and stay there...
--The defense stands tall again, and the Broncos will get the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead...

Broncos Seventh Drive --

--The Broncos will start from the 20, and once again we'll have to deal with a guest in the booth. This is just STUPID. No other way to describe it...
--Scheffler makes the catch and is slow to get up...I think that will be every play...
--Stokley saves Cutler from his first "you-know-what" of the night....
--What a catch by Stokley! Hopefully the football gods are smiling on the Broncos for the Favre love-fest...
--A huge run by Young is on it's way back because of a holding penalty on Brandon Marshall. That is AWFUL. He pushed the defender, that's all....HORRIBLE!
--As it stands the Broncos are still moving the ball, and are closing in on field goal range...
--What an effort by Marshall, though all he had to do was throw it away...Now the Broncos have a third and long...There's a time and place for all that, now isn't the time...
--The time-out mis-management begins...How huge is that penalty now. Just plain bad....
--Another penalty...this time a false start on Lepsis....Not looking good right now...Hell, take a shot at the end-zone...
--Again, the Broncos cannot break a tackle. Huge play-call coming up and Shanny will try and force the Packers deep. Sauerbrun needs to step up here...
--Great job! Packers start inside the 5.

Packers Eighth Drive --

--Broncos need to get off the field now...
--They can't...instead of bringing pressure the Broncos sit back and Driver makes the grab. Another Packer first down...
--With all the struggles the defense has had, I find it interesting that Shanny has put the game, and season, in their hands...
--Another first down..This is just too easy...
--It has been the pass defense tonight, folks, that has let the defense down...
--If anything, the Packers have done a great job taking the clock down to near two minutes...
--Ball-game right here...the defense stands again, and Champ was again that close to a pick. The Broncos will have a chance...

Broncos Eighth Drive --

--Every game seems to come down to the end like this, so Cutler should be used to it...
--I believe the Broncos have two timeouts, but will start all the way back at their five...
--More penalty action against the Packers, and that will give the Broncos a first down, and give the offense room...
--Nothing doing on the run, and the Broncos will let it go to the 2-minute warning...
--TWO-MINUTE WARNING -- PACKERS 13 - BRONCOS 10
--Tipped pass, and the Broncos now looking at 3rd and 10
--3rd and ten, run an 8 yard route...
--4th and two, and the Broncos are now down to one timeout...
REMINDER -- MHR RADIO TO FOLLOW!!!
--Stokley comes up big once again. Solid job by the O-Line to give Cutler time...
--Pears is getting owned by Kampman....
--Brandon Marshall is frickin' awesome!!!
--Marshall needs to be careful here not to try too much, but the Broncos need to score the TD here...
--What a run by Young!!! Getting inside the 5 to the 3.....First and Goal BRONCOS!!!
--Second and one, actually, though that is not important...The Broncos have two shots to get it in...In the end-zone or in the stands...
--The play was there...Marshall was open, the pass was slightly behind....3rd and 1....
--Cutler tries to run it in, cannot, and the Broncos have to settle for a scramble field goal, for the second time this year, Elam gets on the field and ties the game....

END OF REGULATION -- BRONCOS 13 -- PACKERS 13

OVERTIME --

Packers Ninth Drive --

--The Packers win the toss and will receive. Will the Broncos inability to get into the endzone for the second time inside the 5 come back to haunt them? Can the defense make a stand.....AGAIN? Here we go Broncos Fans!!!
--Broncos have to find a way...Any way...to get this done...
--Great coverage by Hall. Favre came up small in Super Bowl XXXII, will he come up small now??
--Hoe won't....Dre Bly, the Broncos big free-agent acquisition, gets beat deep by Greg Jennings and just like that the game is over.....

FINAL SCORE -- PACKERS 19 - BRONCOS 13

Now Vince Vaugh in the booth
Ugh. This is completely annoying.

Vince Vaughn
How is he related to Favre?

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 8:58 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

but hey!
we get to hear all about Fred Claus! Sweet!

The Best Part
We won't miss any Favre magic since it will be over a Bronco drive!!  Yay!!

OMFMG!
Please, can just anyone kill those stupid people in the booth!?

by DjBroncos on Oct 29, 2007 9:00 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Another weak holding call
But good to see Young burst through like that.  And it actually had the announcers talking about the game which was a bonus

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:02 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Terrible holding call
Or we are probably up in this game by 4.

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:04 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Guru - only second down
They got the first on that short run on 1st and 2 after the hold.

Would have been nice to get a replay showing the GB defense and if they reacted well to cover Cutler but I was obviously not expecting one from this crew.

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:05 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Easy on the timeout, Guru
I think it was a wise choice.  Let's all just get cool here.  Make these plays count.

by Jeremy Bolander on Oct 29, 2007 9:05 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

ugh
if it wasn't for the asinine holding call we'd be up  by 4....

by binford04 on Oct 29, 2007 9:09 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Great punt!
Now the D really needs to go 3 and out. One awful call away from being up 4 in this game.

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:09 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder what the score is
when they have a guest in the booth versus when it is just the 3 stooges.  It seems like nothing but bad things happened when both Deanna Favre and Vince Vaughn were in the booth.

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:10 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

i thought bly was a good cover corner...
Rod Smith is a Hall of Famer.

by Jake The Stash on Oct 29, 2007 9:12 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

man up
get out of the damn zone.  The run D has been decent recently, but Favre is ripping the zone apart.  Play some man and get some pressure.

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:16 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Not that I don't appreciate the late Elam FGs
But let's the the Broncos stuff one in the end zone and win the game outright.

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:18 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

umm, that's not English
how about "let's have the Broncos stuff one in the end zone"

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok, I was greedy
I'm sorry.  how about "let's have the Broncos get a first down here"

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

this team has NO weapons...
Rod Smith is a Hall of Famer.

by Jake The Stash on Oct 29, 2007 9:25 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

a big problem
is that we are using two TE which ties up the middle of the field where Stokely works best.

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Staring another home loss in the face
Hopefully they can get it done here on 4th down.

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

time for two shots
fade to Marshall
out from the slot to Stokely

Selving Young!
I love that guy

Son of a b!tch
I wanted a TD there. That sucks.

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:33 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Just in time.
Get it done early in OT.

by Russ Oates on Oct 29, 2007 9:33 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice drive
Damn should have been a TD though...

by binford04 on Oct 29, 2007 9:34 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

very scared of Favre right now
despite all the mocking earlier.  I see them taking a shot with play action pretty early on, especially if we have 8 in the box.  Be smart corners, be smart.  (but pick one off)

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:36 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

No play action
But you were right. We put 8 in the box and got burned deep.

You gotta be kidding me

Season over

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:38 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Say what you will about Bly
and it was bad BUT...

No safety help (Ferguson was terrible all game)...

and no pass rush (single most unimaginative scheme by Bates yet this year.)

by ohnokoolaid on Oct 29, 2007 9:39 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

It was Cox back in the middle
on that last play with Foxworth in the slot and Ferguson as the 8th man in the box.  (but that is not really the issue) The really discouraging thing is how predictable it all was.  Bly has to stay deeper than Jennings on that play knowing that he's essentially on an island.  He can be more aggressive when they have a pair of safeties back there to cover for him.

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:46 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Had our chances
You have to score a touchdown in the situation the Broncos were in. Didn't get it done. Start looking to next year right now. This team is just not good enough as it currently stands.

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:42 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Touchdown
for sure.  I wonder why they didn't feel they could spike it on the first down play at the end?

by Jeremy Bolander on Oct 29, 2007 9:45 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

same as the Buffalo game
couldn't be sure it was a first.  That was a terrible third down play call.  It had zero chance of scoring a touchdown.  Why not just throw one more quick one to the end zone?

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 9:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

UGH
welp, we gave up the deep ball tonight. looks like our corners aren't as threatening as everyone thinks.

Great, not the rest of the NFL is going to be challenging Champ and Bly deep.

by binford04 on Oct 29, 2007 9:43 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Ferguson
Must be replaced. He was absolute horseshit tonight. May be one of the worst safeties in the game.

by Make It Rain on Oct 29, 2007 9:44 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW
Why cant we score a effin touchdown and win the fuckin game.  Fuck this shit!!! season over im pissed.

by TommyTSlice on Oct 29, 2007 9:47 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

and shit
where was the fucking pass rush tonight

by TommyTSlice on Oct 29, 2007 9:48 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Blow It Up!
Can we start talking about blowing this defense up yet?  Let's do something crazy like move Champ to safety and Lynch to OLB, just for kicks.  Add to them (after those moves) Williams, and the youngsters up front, and you can get rid of the rest.  Terrible... just terrible.

By the way, I'm mostly kidding here guys.  I'm just upset.

by ejruiz on Oct 29, 2007 9:48 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

One blow up that should happen
or shred I should say, is the remainder of Rice's contract.

The guy hase two moves, a speed rush that takes him upfield and out of the play, and a bull rush that gets two feet of push into the backfield.  Add this to his unproductive me-first attitude (those quotes from two weeks ago should have embarrassed Shanahan into leaving him inactive for the rest of the season) and we have a guy seriously hurting this team.

Dumervil stunk tonight as well, but he's earned mulligans.

Moss and Crowder, two guys that played very well against Pittsburgh, had to watch for most (or all) of the game while Engleberger and Rice played like ends on a Division II bottom feeder defense.

by ohnokoolaid on Oct 29, 2007 9:54 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed
Cut Rice.  Sign Grady Jackson and see if he fits the team and system.  (even better would be to activate Rod Smith but I think that is still wishful thinking at this point)

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 10:00 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

BTW, it is kinda ironic
that Dumervil's best play (and possibly only good play) may have cost the Broncos the game.  Had he not tipped Favre's elbow on that last third down, it really looked like Champ had it lined up to jump the route and take it back for six.  (Not that you can blame Elvis for doing his job and Denver definitely had other chances to win, but it seems like an apt metpahor for the entire season)

by MattR on Oct 29, 2007 10:09 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cutler
Was fantastic tonight and had no picks. That said, he should have had the pass to Marshall in the end zone.

This was a shitty couple of days to be a sports fan in Colorado.

by binford04 on Oct 29, 2007 9:48 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Thank God I'm a Reds fan!
Not sure what my baseball affiliation has to do with such a disappointing game, but what the heck.

BTW why was there a lineman out there named "Rice"?  Was he someone they brought in off the street to imitate pressuring the quarterback or was he given the reps to justify the D-line youth movement?

by Arctic Bronco on Oct 29, 2007 10:50 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

was listening to Cutler speak after the game
and it sounds like he did not have the ability to audible out of that last play.  The QB draw was designed to spread the defense out wide across the field and then run it up the middle but GB had two LB's in the middle.  Another possibility is that Cutler had the authority to audible but misread the D.  Either way, it would have been nice to have switched to another fade or some other pass into the end zone.
