Chargers 41 - Broncos 3 -- Post Game Comments

I have a lot to say about tonight's game, but we really want to hear form the coaches and players.  Here is what they had to say after the game....

Mike Shanahan --

General --
"I did a very poor job getting this football team ready.  I don't want to take anything away from the [San Diego] Chargers.  But we're a much better football team than what we were today.  We had some turnovers early; we had to overcome that adversity.  It's my job to get these guys ready to play, and obviously we didn't play at the level we should have...I don't know if I've ever been more embarrassed; I don't think our players have ever been more embarrassed to put on that type of show.  But, like I said, it starts with me and I did a poor job getting them ready."

On the Early Fumbles --
"We gave them some opportunities.  We had the fumble for the touchdown and the kickoff return to the nine-yard line.  They had some opportunities early and we didn't play very well, and we got behind, and didn't play very good catch up."

Level of Concern --
"Well, we've got a lot of work to do.  Anytime you give up the type of yards that we gave up in the running game, there's a concern there, so, we'll work at it extremely hard this week.  Obviously, in our bye week we'll do it for a couple days and hopefully improve.  Against a team like San Diego, you can stop them for a couple of plays, but you make one wrong mistake at linebacker or defensive end and they can turn it into a big play."

On the Chargers' Touchdown Run at the End of the First Half --
"We had a person right there, we had a defensive end that had containment."

On Bouncing Back after this Loss --
"You've just got to do it day by day.  We've got the personnel.  I just have to do a better job getting them ready."

On RB Travis Henry's Off Field Distractions --
"I don't think it was a distraction, to be honest with you.  I think it was a distraction for him because he's got to talk about it.  Obviously I had to address it, but, besides that, that was no reason for the performance we had.  That had nothing to do with it."

On CB Champ Bailey's Injury --
"I don't know.  It was serious enough for him not to go back in the game.  That's not good, because Champ usually plays hurt.  For him not to be in there is a big concern."

On DE Simeon Rice --
"He's just not one hundred percent yet.  We're going to keep on trying to watch him play and watch him practice.  His shoulder is probably about eighty percent, and we thought it was in our best interest to go in a different direction.  When he is healthy, he brings a lot to the table, but he isn't right now."

On Playing Poorly at Home --
"Hopefully we can do something about it next time we play at home."

Did any of the Players Quit Today? --
"No, I didn't see anybody quit, did you?  You had some guys who aren't normally in there at the end of the game.  Like I said, it goes back to me doing a poor job getting ready.  We have to regroup.  It's a long season, and we have to play much better than we have."

QB Jay Cutler --

General --
"It's a team game, and it takes a lot of players to make it work. We have to work everything out top to bottom."

"We have too much talent on this team. Guys are frustrated right now. We have a lot of talent and a lot of character in this room."

On The Bye Week --
"I think it will be good for the guys to get away and think about what it's like to be on this team. I know we will go straighten things out and come back."

TE Tony Scheffler --

General --
"We didn't come out the way we wanted to, but it felt good for me to get out there and get my hands on some balls and even on a punt."

On Improving --
"We probably have more talent than them (San Diego), that's what hurts the most.  I have no doubt this team will be good this year. We are a half game back (in the division) and there are a lot of ball games to be played. We have to come back healthy after the bye week and fix our mistakes.

LB Ian Gold --

General --
"How do you explain 41-0 or whatever it was? You don't. We have our work cut out for us, but we are grown men and we know what we have to do to get back to the top.

"I've never gotten beat like this in my entire career--even dating back to high school."

On stopping the run --
"Anytime you have 11 guys who put their best effort out there and coaches working for us, you have a chance to do good things. I think we will get the run thing sorted out and come back."

On the bye week --
"It will allow us to get some guys back. We need to mentally re-evaluate ourselves. We pride ourselves on going out and giving our best effort. Today it wasn't good enough."

WR Brandon Stokley --

General --
"There is nothing good about this game--all three aspects; offense, defense and special teams. We just have to get better.

"I'm very embarrassed. We worked hard this week but we just couldn't get anything going. There are a lot of mistakes to be corrected and we have to get healthy in time to face Pittsburgh."

On bye week --
"I would rather play right away and get this bad taste out of my mouth. But we have to us this to our advantage and take this week to improve as a team."

WR Brian Clark --

General --
I've never had a game like this; I've never experienced a loss like this. But as Coach Shanahan always tells us, it's a marathon, not a sprint. We are just coming around the curve."

On his fumble returned for a touchdown --
"The guy put his helmet on the ball and I wasn't technically sound with the ball. I tried to bite off more than I think I could chew. It takes 11 guys to make a return work and the other 10 guys didn't necessarily know what I was doing."

WR Brandon Marshall --

On his fumble --
You can't do that. That play could have changed the whole game. I think I'm trying to do too much instead of just taking what is there."

On WR Javon Walker not playing --
"It takes 11 (on offense) and one guy is not going to stop a show. We have to get it done and we didn't.

DE Jarvis Moss --

General --
"There is no doubt in my mind we will get this thing turned around. We have a lot of great leaders and veterans on this team. This is not acceptable."

On the fans booing --
"It's sad, but you can't blame them. We didn't get it done today."

On bye week --
"It's going to make us hungry. As a competitor, if you can't go back to the drawing board and correct your mistakes, you should be doing something else."

I'm tired of all the talk
They say after every week, well this is unacceptable, we're going to turn this thing around, etc.. why don't you prove it on the field for once guys? This was the most embarassing loss I can ever remember. My deepest fear right now is that the team has quit on Shannahan. A team that's trying out there doesn't get beat 41-3 by anybody in the league. This is the NFL.

Why'd they ask Moss's opinion?
What can he do standing on the sidelines?

The poll on the website:
What has been most disappointing about the Broncos' 2-3 start?

» Lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks - 11.4%
» Red zone offense - 14.7%
» Rushing defense - 49.3%
» Special teams - 2.5%
» Tackling - 10.6%
» Turnovers - 11.7%

LOL, it's just all of it! But it's not possible to choose more than one point, what a pitty.

I would have added...
players not having heart and no leadership in the locker room.

Looks like the Mile High Magic moved northeast from Mile High Stadium to Coors Field!

Maybe the magic can come back in November after the Rockies win the World Series??
