Horse Tracks - 11/14/07 -- 'He's Back' Edition

Nothing like the fresh smell of Orange and Blue coffee in the morning!!!

We start with some more on the return of Kenny Peterson.

Former Texans RB Wali Lundy was among those who the Broncos worked out during their off-day Tuesday.

Former Bronco WR Brian Clark was signed by Tampa Bay and placed on their practice squad.

John Elway is finding more time to be a dad.

Jeff Legwold looks forward to the Broncos attempt at National TV redemption.

The Broncos of today are a bit different than the one who broke Training Camp.

Vince Young is finding his second season to be a bit tougher than his first.

At least someone thinks the Broncos are on the upswing.

The Pac-Man Jones saga continues with news of a plea deal.

Here is the Titans V. Broncos Game Center.

He may have gotten the upswing portion right, and I can't help but hope he's right when he says that Freguson has lost the starting safety job (that seems doubtful to me), but when looking for "Who's Hot" on defense he should have rewatched the game instead of looking at the box score.

He calls for Crowder to get the nod, and yes 2 sacks are great for the rookie.  But there is not a more obvious hot hand on Denver's D right now than the King himself, Doom, da-doom, doom, DOOOOOOM!

Tomahawk Chop!  Knock that ball outta there!!!

Young will get his first rushing TD against the Chiefs. Go Broncos!!

I think...
Ferguson has lost the job.  Hamza and Foxy will keep getting the start, until Lynch comes back, then I think it will be Hamza and Lynch....

Random thought on our injuries
I was bored last night and figured out the salary cap figures (as best I could) of the 8 guys who are on IR.  Jarvis Moss was the toughest as I could not find out how his bonuses were broken up (just that he signed a 5 year, $15 million deal with $8 million in guarantees) so I assumed his bonuses would prorate to $1 million this year.  Based on that assumption, I calculated that we have $17,169,762 in cap space being taken up by guys that got hurt this year.  I believe the salary cap is $109 million this year so that is about 15.75% of the Broncos cap space that is wasted through no fault of their own.  To be honest, I have nothing to compare that to and no way to put it in perspective, but it seems like a large percentage to me.

Nice Work!
So that is 8 guys on IR:

Ekuban     16   games missed in 2007
Holdman    16
Rod        16
Hamilton   16
Nalen      11
Alexander  11
Jackson    10
Moss        8

That equals approx. $165,000 per man-game missed, which can be extrapolated out and applied to any injury, with a moderate accuracy, to give us the following list:

Week 1:  $2,145,000
Week 2:  $2,145,000
Week 3:  $1,980,000
Week 4:  $2,145,000
Week 5:  $1,815,000
Week 6:  $1,650,000
Week 7:  $1,815,000
Week 8:  $1,980,000
Week 9:  $1,815,000
Week 10: $1,485,000 !
Week 11: $1,320,000
Week 12: $1,320,000
Week 13: $1,320,000
Week 14: $1,320,000
Week 15: $1,320,000
Week 16: $1,320,000
_______
TOTAL:   $26,895,000
+/- 13%= $23,398,65 to $29,391,350

!=In Week 10 (this week) I assume that only Walker will be out, and then no injuries outside of who is already on injured reserve will occur from then on out.  HA, HA!!  I'm so damn funny!

So, according to this, in addition to the $17.2million lost to the guys on injured reserve, we have additionally lost somewhere between $6.3mil and $12.2 mil in man-games to weekly injuries.

So we will have spent at least 22% to 27% of our alloted salaries, and gotten nothing in return this year.  Sounds like my old job.

Young will get his first rushing TD against the Chiefs. Go Broncos!!

Your estimate might be a bit high
Just because the guys on IR are disproportionately high salary guys.  I am trying to put together a list of cap figures for the entire roster, but it is slow work.  At this point, I would guess that there are 10 Broncos with cap figures over $2.75 million this year.  Four of them are on the IR.

Another random factoid:  Based on the guys I have made it through, the Bronco with the highest cap figure for 2007 is Matt Lepsis at 6.75 million.

Solid source of cap info found
I found this guy's website and he seems to be using the same info I was using (and then some), plus he is way ahead of what I had done.  He has spreadsheets and documents with notes for most teams as well as info about recent draft classes.

I considered this
Which is why I included the +/- 13% which represents the approximate percentage of the $109 million salary cap that you were working with.  If you want to be conservative, the low number is the way to go.  But the median at approx $26mil might not be too far off when you consider that J-Walk and Champ are both accounting for missed man-games, as well as Henry.

Or, maybe you mean that the $165,000 per man-game is a bit high.  Definitely a possibility.  Can 4 haves outweigh six have-nots by that much?

I am interested in seeing what you pull together out of the salary cap info you're gathering.
