'Skins Taylor Shot; In Critical Condition
According to multiple sources, including our own Hogs Haven, Washington Redskins Safety Sean Taylor was shot, possibly twice, at his home in Florida during an apparent home invasion.
According to ESPN.COM --
The Miami Herald reported paramedics found Taylor with a gunshot wound to the groin. A family friend who did not want to be identified told ABC-TV 10 in Miami that Taylor was shot twice.
A brief statement from the Redskins said Taylor was undergoing treatment at the Miami hospital and that police were investigating. His family has asked that no information about his condition be released at this point, said hospital spokeswoman Lorraine Nelson.
Taylor has a home in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay that he bought for $900,000 two years ago.
Taylor, 24, is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.
Knowing first hand about a tragedy such as this, our thoughts are with Taylor, his family, the Redskins and their fans.

How awful!
I think it would be a good idea and show a lot of class if a lot of us go register at the Redskins blog and send our prayers to the Redskins family. Look for the comments section under where the story of the shooting shows up on their blog site. Register at Hog's Haven, then drop a note here:

shot to the groin
Les Carpenter, who is working the story for us in Miami, heard rumblings that Sean may have opened his eyes.I have not been able to get that confirmed but just heard from a team offical that Sean is now responsive, which is obviously a turn for the best. I will continue working away to get more details, but this is obviously a turn for the better after Sean spent much of the day in a "non-responsive and unconscious" state.
As the person put it: "Finally, the first good news all day." Let's hope it's the first of more to come.
UPDATE: Vinny Cerrato just called us with confirmation.
"He was responsive to the doctor's requests to squeeze his hands and showed facial expressions. The doctors were very happy about that," Cerrato said " ... Two doctors came and told us they were excited about that."
Cerrato also confirmed my earlier reports about Sean being "non-responsive and unconscious."
Cerrato said: "We'd heard all that and what they told us was to hope foir a miracle."

Good stuff MattR
The responsiveness is a great sign! If he's responding by following directions to the doctor's spoken words he has more mental capacity than someone just responding to pain, sound, or some other stimulus. It may still not be a full recovery, but this sign is the best you can get while the guy is still under.
Kudos to you for going over to Hogs Haven to offer your words of support. You beat me there earlier today. : )

Latest I've heard
Sean did lose a lot of blood from what seems to be two gunshot wounds. One was near the groin, so I'm assuming he either had massive vascular bleeding from a genitillia wound, or a femoral bleed (the femoral artery is the major artery for the leg, it runs through the groin). His blood loss and his continued unconsciousness are concerns about possible brain damage in some reports, but I think that's jumping the gun. From what I've read he hasn't been conscious since the attack though.
For right now I feel optimistic. He's out of surgery and in intensive care and I'm sure he's receiving excellent care. If he were unstable I might expect him to still be in surgery. If he is "serious" that is better than "critical". As long as he is stable in either event he should pull through.
The fears about any brain damage from oxygen deprivation (from the blood loss) may just be because everything else is fine. If he doesn't have any other major wounds (and I haven't read about any) that is the only thing left to worry about. Without a brain injury (or emotional trauma associated from being a victim) he might even be ready to play before the end of the season.
It's too early to jump the gun. Anything can happen at this point, good or bad. It's nice to see some Cowboys fans and Broncos fans sending the love to Hogs Haven. I again ask anyone with a moment to drop by their and give your prayers or regards.
