Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

IT's Official, Plummer To Retire And Other Stuff

Earlier in the day Mike Shanahan moved forward with the propsed deal to send Jake Plummer to Tampa after negotiations with the Houston Texans broke down.  The thought was the Buccaneers were going to turn around and trade Jake elsewhere, most likely Oakland, after they signed Jeff Garcia.  It even got so far as the NFLPA filing a mystery grievance over the Tamps deal.  After all the cock-jousting it appears not of it is going to matter.

Jake Plummer made it official today, annoucing his retirement on the Jake Plummer Foundation website.  Upon visiting the website you will see a letter from Jake stating the following -

Jake Plummer, who started 136 games and threw for 29,253 yards as a quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos, announced his retirement today.

First, I want to thank my family and close friends for their loyal support through all these fun-filled, rollercoaster years.  Second, I owe all of my greatest achievements in football to the men who stood by my side as my teammates and coaches.  Also, a big thank you to all the fans that have rooted for me through the ups and downs of my career.  Football has been awesome to me in many ways.  I leave the game with my health and happiness, and look forward to the future; I've got many rivers to cross

At last there appears to be an end to this bizarre saga.  As a Bronco fan I'd like to thank Jake Plummer for four great years and 40 wins.  Surely things didn't go the way we all wanted them but Jake gave it his all and the Broncos are better now than when he arrived 4 years ago.  Good Luck to Jake with whatever the future holds.

The Broncos actually made their first Free Agent signing of the year by coming to terms with former New Orleans Saints' offensive lineman Montrae Holland.

Holland started 30/52 games played over 4 years with the Saints.  He has impressive size at 6'2-322, and will fit into the zone-blocking scheme the Broncos employ.   Holland was a 4th round pick of the Saints out of Florida State and never started fewer than 7 games in any season.  He give the Broncos needed depth along the offensive line in case Chris Kuper cannot make the transition into the starting lineup. The signing completely closes the door on the return of Cooper Carlisle to the Broncos.

I think it is a bit more
He got a 7 million signing bonus when he signed the 7 year deal in 2003.  That is 1 million a year for each of the 3 years remaining.

USA Today (I think this is a good source for player's salary data although I wish there was a more comprehensive and up to date one out there that includes all the salary cap implications going forward) shows he got a 6.76 million option bonus in 2005.  Since there were 5 years left on the deal that would be 1.352 a year.

Lastly, this Denver Post article says he got a $2 million bonus when he restructured his deal alst year (4 years remaining at the time so it counts as half a million a year).

Totalling it up, there is $3 million left from the oriiginal bonus, 4.056 million left from the option bonus and 1.5 million left on last year's bonus for a total of a $8.556 million hit on this year's cap.
