That's Why They Play The Game

Just a quick mention here to another feeble attempt by the talking heads at ESPN to have an opinion.  To pass the long span of time called the NFL off-season, the NFL gurus over at the evil-empire have put together an Ultimate Depth Chart, ranking the offense and defense of each team, division by division.

The AFC West was second on their list, and yesterday it was released for public consumption.  To be honest there really aren't any surprises.  Here is the breakdown --

Best Offense In AFC West --

Mark Schlereth - San Diego
Merril Hoge    - San Diego
Joe Theismann  - Denver

Best Defense In AFC West --

Mark Schlereth - San Diego
Merril Hoge    - San Diego
Joe Theismann  - San Diego

Best Team In AFC West --

Mark Schlereth - San Diego
Merril Hoge    - San Diego
Joe Theismann  - San Diego

If this were the judges card in a boxing match this would be called a unanimous decision.  I can't really complain too much about it, San Diego did go 14-2 last season, while the Broncos faltered to a 9-7 season.  I just don't see the same type of season for both teams in 2007, however, and we all know Norv Turner will do something stupid to cost the Chargers a game here and there.

To his credit(or pure lunacy) Joe Theismann did say the Broncos had the best offense in the division --

Denver has the best offense in this division. This team is consistently able to run the ball effectively and now we get to see Mike Shanahan really start to do the things he likes to do offensively because of the presence of Jay Cutler. Shanahan is still one of the best offensive minds in the league and he is salivating at the opportunity to utilize Cutler's strengths. Get ready to see the return of consistent big plays in Denver.

Good thing these things aren't decided on paper in June.  Just another bullet to add to the chamber come September.  Forgive, but never, ever forget.
