Predicting The Broncos Roster - The Final 53(54....55)

I had promised you my projected 53 man roster, and what better time than after the first roound of cuts?!?!  Actually, there wasn't a really big surprise on the list, though we are still awaiting 3 more names to come out today.  I told everyone that Darrell Hackney would be the #3 quarterback and he will be.  I told everyone that David Kircus was a goner after his arrest.  My big miss during my position breakdowns was on Kenard Lang.  I though Lang woould provide leadership to the young guys and actually start opposite Ebenezar Ekuban at DE.  After getting cut yesterday, Lang couldn't even make the team after Ekuban was lost for the season.  Meatloaf said it best, I guess, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Now that we are days away from the final roster cuts, let's see how close I get to nailing the final 53-man roster.  While I am reletively confident, Shanny is as unpredictable as anyone.  Here goes....

Pos Offense Pos Defense
QB Jay Cutler
Patrick Ramsey
DE Elvis Dumervil
John Engelberger
Tim Crowder
Jarvis Moss
RB Travis Henry
Cecil Sapp
Mike Bell
Selvin Young
DT Sam Adams
Amon Gordon
Jimmy Kennedy
Marcus Thomas
Alvin McKinley
WR Javon Walker
Brandon Marshall
Brandon Stokley
Domenik Hixon
Brian Clark
Quincy Morgan
OLB Ian Gold
Louis Green
Nate Webster
Wesley Mallard
TE Daniel Graham
Tony Scheffler
Stephen Alexander
Mike Leach
MLB D.J. Williams
D.D. Lewis
T Matt Lepsis
Erik Pears
Adam Meadows
CB Champ Bailey
Dre Bly
Domonique Foxworth
Karl Paymah
Jeff Shoate
C
Tom Nalen
Greg Eslinger
SS Nick Ferguson
Curome Cox
G Ben Hamilton

FS John Lynch

FB Kyle Johnson
Paul Smith
P/K Todd Sauerbrun

A fun excercise....When I was done with my first pass I actually had 54 names in the chart above.  Not bad for one pass, but it left one more cut I had to make.  When I looked over the roster, I simply had too many Tight Ends, becuase Mike Leach, who isn't going anywhere is "officially" a Tight End.  That meant I had to sacrifice one more.  That made my last cut Nate Jackson.

Here are a couple of other "predictions" for the roster....

**LT Ryan Harris will be placed on IR.  He simply has missed too much time to be a realistic option at any point this year and I like what I have seen from the guys already on the roster.  Let Harris get healthy, get stronger, and come into camp next year ready to compete.

**My practice squad list includes -- QB Darrell Hackney, C Mark Fenton, LG Emmanuel Akah, WR Marquay McDaniel, DT Stephen Harris, S Roderick Rogers, K Brandon Pace.  That leaves two spots for players cut from other rosters

**Andre Hall is going to get caught in a numbers game.  I would love to stash Hall on the PS again, but I don't think we can.  No matter how impressive someone is in college, or in practice, ya gotta perform in games and Hall has not been able to because of injuries.  Conversely, Selvin Young looked great, taking advantage of the opportunity before him.

**You'll notice there is no Rod Smith. With Smith on the PUP List until Week 6, the Broncos will have time, and a roster spot, to not onyl see how Smith comes along but to validate the youth at Wide Receiver. There will be some injury, no doubt, that will open a roster spot as well. While it will be interesting to see what happens, the Broncos have plenty of time to decide and alot will happen in the first 6 weeks of the season.

Ok...your turn.  Bash away!!!

At what point...
are they going to cut Rod Smith? I see he didn't make your roster. Shanny has said Rod has a spot, but with both Clark and Hixon looking decent in preseason and Morgan being the kickoff returner, it looks like you have Rod's days numbered.

Recount....
I keep coming up with 55 players on this list.

Some thoughts - I think Hackney will go to the practice squad.  Shanahan hasn't taken three quarterbacks on the roster for a few years.  I had Young on p.s. too.  But after his last game I think he'll make the team.  I don't think we'll keep 6 WR and 5 TE, so I expect Morgan to get cut, with Clark getting the return duties.

I forgot....
to delete Jackson and Hackney....

The Broncos will probably go with 2 QBs and put Hackney on the PS....

Yes and no...
With Rod being on the PUP list until Week 6, it means the Broncos have time to make a decision.  Sometimes it is made for them because another injury opens up a slot.....

Alot will happen in the 6 weeks before the Broncos have to decide...

So...
I don't know how that works. If a guy is on the PUP list, he doesn't count as a roster spot, but you have to make a decision about him at some point? Not like IR, right?

I believe
They have 6  weeks to make the decision

TE's
Wow that's a lot of Tight Ends.  I thought I was familiar with their offensive scheme and could see the need for 3, but 4?? I probably don't know something, but that seems like quite a bit, especially seeing how thin the safety depth looks.

You can't....
really count Mike Leach.  He's the Long-Snapper and doesn't factor in to anything else...

That makes sense!
Thanks! I should have realized that!

no surprises
I love the NFL. David Kircus was the huge feel good story last year.... and now hes gone.

pretty close to perfect!
I'd say keep Nate Jackson and cut Alexander.  I know it's rough either way, but now that we have a great blocking TE, and because Nate can play WR in a pinch, we're better served by keeping Jackson rather than Stephen.

And with Sapp able to play FB as well as RB, I'd say we can save a spot by dropping Paul Smith (even though he has ST experience).

That said, I like what you've done.

Great job TSG!
