Jaguars @ Broncos -- Game Day Open Thread -- 4th Quarter

     @

Date: Sunday, September 23, 2007

Time: 4:05 p.m. ET

Teams: Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) at Denver Broncos (2-0)

Location: Invesco Field @ Mile High -- Denver, CO

Broncos Seventh Drive cont...

--Time to find out if holding the Jags to a couple FG's will pay dividends...There is alot of time, and the Broncos justs need 2 TD's to take the lead..
--Brandon Stokely is as good as it gets in the slot and the Broncos have another first down
--Marshall is awesome!!
--The Broncos won't be denied this time, and Travis Henry has a Denver Touchdown!!!
Jaguars 20 - BRONCOS 14

Jaguars Seventh Drive --

--The defense has stepped up so far in the 2nd half...We need on more tough stop...Preferrably a three and out!
--A run for 3 yards on first down...
--Lewis has a first down, and the Jags TE has had a huge day today...
--Another catch by a Tight End and the defense just doesn't have an answer for David Garrard today...
--Already in field goal range, the Jags can put this game away with a TD
--Nice tackle by Nick Ferguson brings up a 3rd down....
--A quarterback draw gets the Jags to the 1. How can the Broncos not see that coming???
--The D-Line celebrating is not something I want to see. You've been shredded all day...
--Interference on Paymeh gives the jags three momre cracks at it...
--ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Fumble recovered by the Broncos and they have the ball, needing 94 yards for the win!!

Broncos Eighth Drive --

--6 minutes to try and win...Can the Comeback Kid do it again??
--Jags doing a great job getting pressure with their front 4....
--Fourth and 5 and the Broncos have to go for it...
--Graham can't hold on and will add to it by spiking the ball. Missed opportunities have just killing the Broncos all a day. Graham has got to make that catch...HAS TO!

Jaguars Eighth Drive --

--The Jags have made it very hard on themselves, and the Broncos have done everything they could to hand a game away....
--Randy Cross making sure everyone knows why Shanny went for it on 4th down. The defense has not shown they can stop the Jags, and the Broncos were out of Time-Outs. He really had no choice...
--A Field Goal should end it. A disappointing loss to say the least...

I am going to try and blow this game off....Playing with my daughters always puts things in their proper perspective....Feel free to talk amongst themselves...

That's all you can say. That coupled with Hixon and Graham not holding on to that pass, the Broncos didn't deserve to win.

2-1 headin into

At least we're not Notre Dame.

Did not deserve to win
The offense did some good stuff, but I seriously question the playcalling. The coaching was atrocious today.

Defense, I don't know where to start. Aside from the two fumble recoveries, they were shredded and didn't show one bit of moxie when it came to stopping the run or anything.

Special teams: The Hixon fumble cost the team 3 points that may end up being the difference in the game.

Great Game!
Sorry for your loss, but you've got something there with your young players!  I bet we see each other again in the Playoffs!

What happenned to our homefield advantage?
In our last 4 regular season games we have lost to two teams we have no business losing to at home in the San Fransisco 49ers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. This is completely unacceptable. Look around the league at what the elite teams are doing to inferior opponents at home. We should be counting our blessings that we are not 0-3 right now. This is not a good football team. I hope it gets corrected but I have a bad feeling the ceiling for this team is 8 wins. I can't remember being this frustrated over a Broncos loss in a while.

Just throwing this in...
anyone see how the Raiders won today?  It's not so bush league after all is it?  Hypocrisy as usual from the dark side.

by Donkey on Sep 23, 2007 5:35 PM MDT   0 recs

Hysterical!
Yeah, Lane Kiffin's move at the end of CLE/OAK? All those complaints about how Shanahan yanked the Raiders' chain last week, and they go and do THE EXACT SAME THING TO CLEVELAND!! I was freakin' rolling. Can't wait to see all of last weeks' whiney Faider quotes posted on their own message boards! What a bunch of jokers!

First post, by the way.  H'lo everybody from Montana.  : )

Wow
the knee jerking on here is just insane right now.

Sure we lost, but half the talk on here is downright ludicrous, and mostly false.

Everyone take a deep breath and reconvene tomorrow, so we can look at this team intelligently and not incoherently.

by ohnokoolaid on Sep 23, 2007 5:39 PM MDT   0 recs

The reason...
I have yet to weigh in...

I do respect the opinion's of everyone and completely understand the frustration...

by TheSportsGuru on Sep 23, 2007 5:48 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I am.
Think about it. With no Elam we're 0-3. If Losman and McKown er whatever knew how to hit a guy in stride, we're 0-3. Plus, we have the 3 of the 4 best teams in the Conference coming up next.

by broncodude793 on Sep 23, 2007 5:51 PM MDT   0 recs

I'm never one to make knee jerk reactions
Especially on the Broncos. I thought we'd be fine when we lost to the Dolphins a couple years back and we were. I didn't overreact to the debacle last season down the stretch because Cutler was brand new and taking his lumps and I knew we were going nowhere fast with Plummer. I tend to be extremely optimistic, but unless the front 7 improves I just don't see the 2007 compaign going too well. It could be one of those dreaded rebuilding years.

by Make It Rain on Sep 23, 2007 5:54 PM MDT   0 recs

As Parcells said...
Hey, you are what you are. There were a few key plays that we didn't make and a few turnovers that sunk us. Jags got back to playing like they always have -- tougher than most people give em credit for. It's a tough loss, for sure. Not sure we've earned the right to be a top 10 team, for sure. We'll know more after the next four opponents -- Indy, stuggling mad SD, Pittsburgh and the revitalized Green Bay.

Thanks, broncodude -- I'm glad to be here and am pulling some hair out myself, but I'm not writing these guys off just yet.

Note to sportsguru -- love the podcast, man.  Lucid comments and great forum.  You do great work, keep it up!

by broncosmontana on Sep 23, 2007 6:03 PM MDT   0 recs

i'm not writing the team off,
I'm telling you that the problem resides in the coaching staff. I'm one to look at the worse case scenario and say okay, we're not going there, but unless something happens in the trenches, we're going to constantly get ran over.

It's not like we don't know what is wrong, we do. They do. We know they do. We know what they're going to do and they know we do, but they do it anyways and still succeed.

I look ahead and see what these teams are good at. Addia oppend it up today. L.T. will go off someday. Pitt is a monster. Favre all of a sudden is playing like hes 28 again. It doesn't favor us and what drives me insane is we should have slaughtered these 3 teams, but we didn't.

Hold on to the freaking ball. IT WON'T BITE.

by broncodude793 on Sep 23, 2007 6:08 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Yup, agreed.
It sucks when you know their strengths, and basically what their entire game plan will be, and you can't find a way to stop it.  As the guru said last week, these are the games you gotta have.

by broncosmontana on Sep 23, 2007 6:16 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I am too,
but I'd rather we just have our asses get kicked and the Raiders win it all, because I can't take this close game crap. It is a rebuilding year unless Bly and Bailey turn into fly's on crap so we can put 9 in the box. yea, I said 9.
Hold on to the freaking ball. IT WON'T BITE.

by broncodude793 on Sep 23, 2007 6:03 PM MDT   0 recs

Side note: congrats to #4
on tying Marino for TDs and passing Elway for wins.  Maybe he'll ride off into the sunset like #7.  Probably won't -- and you really have to appreciate how special John's scenario was.  But it is kinda cool to think of the possiblity of another legend following Elway down that rarest of paths.  Anybody remember the sideline impression of Elway's warm up tosses that Farve did for his teammates during one of their games?  Funny funny guy.

by broncosmontana on Sep 23, 2007 6:12 PM MDT   0 recs

Let my clarify myself.
The problem with this team is the coaching staff. They don't prepare the offense or defense. The other team gets great field position. This forces the D-Linemen to break the scheme and try to get upfield to make a play. In reselt, they get ran right through. Then the offense, needing to immediately come back forces some things and puts the D in even more dire situations. They fail again and then a turnover puts the game away for the other team. It should but then we almost make a comeback only to be thwarted by horrible play calling by.....THE COACHING STAFF. Sound familiar?

I will post this in the afterthought diary.

Hold on to the freaking ball. IT WON'T BITE.

by broncodude793 on Sep 23, 2007 6:13 PM MDT   0 recs

Complete misdiagnosis
the players did not break the scheme trying to make a play today (save for maybe Webster, who looks way too out of control), they just failed to execute the scheme.

Some blame can go to the coaches for some play calling, but Shanahan doesn't outthink himself too often and has earned some off-games.  Wanting to fry him for one loss is exactly a knee-jerk.  If his play-calling is such a problem, why is today the day everyone decides to criticize it?

If you want to fault the coaches/administrators for their choices of players, you have a case, and I'll make this case in my weekly story for guru, but at the end of the day, the players failed to execute, not Shanahan, not Bates, not O'Brien.

Gold makes way too much money to not stay with tight ends, the same for Graham and catching passes, the same for Lepsis and protecting the passer.

Shanahan is taking too much heat here for a couple of players that aren't doing their jobs.

Besides, I have a hard time thinking critical about a team with two young budding superstars at QB and WR, and the best pair of corners in football.

Shanahan isn't one to settle.  They'll make their corrections and go on.  There's too much talent to start the "sky is falling" mantra.

Besides, look at Jacksonville over the last three years, and you'll see that they play their best against the best teams in football.  They deserve some credit too.

Hard game to watch
Getting manhandled yet again by the opposing team's running game and horrid special teams once again made it hard to watch this game. :(

by MADness on Sep 23, 2007 6:15 PM MDT   0 recs

My knee-jerk reactions....
somehow I'm still optimistic...mostly because Cutler has been solid, Marshall is emerging, Henry aside from today will have a great year.  I believe the defense will gel in time and will get better.

The bad:  special teams continues to put the team in tough situation.  Atrocious play calling inside the red zone has led to too many 22-yard FGs (or nothing).  The defense struggles to out any pressure on the QB.

Also bad: the strength of their next three opponents means that the Broncos' time to gel and fine-tune things has run out.  They have to start playing up to their talent and eliminate mistakes now.

by Donkey on Sep 23, 2007 7:49 PM MDT   0 recs

Game planning bite in the ass??
My only major complaint is that they never even tried to run Henry against the Jags.  The first three and out didn't see his number called and by the end of the game he had only around 11 touches.  That is not Broncos football, no matter how confident we are in are WR corps.  Why did we get away from the run so fast?  Henry's last few runs averaged around 6ypc, and the Jax D was looking tired, our signature wear-em'-down rushing game would have worked today.

Theory:  Denver D gets a nice three-and-out sequence to start the game.  Denver O opens with a little UNNECESSARY trickery and complication. Shanny thinks it would be worth it to get Jags back on their heels defensively, but Jax is ready and we get a three-and-out to start.  Still not a terrible thing until Jaguars start a drive that doesn't end until the half is almost over.  Whatever Denver planned on doing offensively went out the window at that point for some reason that I still can't figure out.  Denver played like they were two scores behind (which, lo and behold they eventually became).  Baffling.

On the upside WE HAD A CHANCE!!  I'll take that anyday.  We have no right to expect what Cutler has been able to deliver this soon, and we had some guys step up (marshall, dumervil, ferguson) in some good ways.  This team by far is one of the most talented we've fielded in years, and despite the loss I'm going to love watching the marshall catch and run from this game for a while.  We all will.

But if the Denver D doesn't learn to tackle (with apologies to Champ here, of course) before the Indy game...Ugh...
