Broncos @ Colts - 4th Quarter Open Thread

     @

Date: Sunday, September 30, 2007

Time: 4:15 p.m. ET

Teams: Denver Broncos (2-1) at Indianapolis Colts (3-0)

Location: RCA Dome -- Indianapolis, Indiana

Colts Seventh Drive cont.... --

--Can the Broncos defense make a stop and at least give the offense a chance?? We'll find out...
--Can someone tell me why John Engelberger is still in the game?
--Enough with teams not throwing at Champ Bailey. That was a Tight End that got behind Bailey. No one is playing well for this defense..
--The only thing stopping the Colts are themselves. --The bad thing about waiting for the Colts to make a mistake is that they rarely do. Horrible defense. Horrible..
--REMEMBER -- We'll talk about the game right after it is over on MHR Radio
--And we'll have a lot to talk about. This time it is Reggie Wayne and another Colts TD. Colts 35 - BRONCOS 20
--The Colts are 5/5 in the Red Zone with 5 TDs. Those stats = a loss

Broncos Eighth Drive --

--How nice it would be to have a kicker who could boot it into the end-zone...
--The first try to get downfield and the rush breaks it up
--Nice to see Henry back on the field....
--Cardinals beating the Steelers, an upset I predicted...
--Kansas City beating the Chargers....Is everything all that bad in Denver??
--A Denver punt should just about end the competitive portion of this game, only the final score remains...

Colts Eighth Drive

--Dallas Clark has owned every one of our DBs...
--Just trying to kill the clock is eating up huge chunks of yards for the Colts offense.
--All those years of missing on D-Line draft picks, and letting go the ones that did work out have come back to haunt the Broncos...
--The Colts, not looking to completely run up the score, kick a field goal on 4th and short. Colts 38 - BRONCOS 20

Broncos Ninth Drive

--The first contact brings Hixon down, an all too frequent occurrence
--I think Shanny will have to realize that his offense will have to out-score teams if they are going to win games
--Lucky for us the Chargers defense might be just as bad...
--Why is Cutler still in the game??
--A couple Manning kneel-downs will do it....Heading over to the Radio Side.....

FINAL SCORE -- INDIANAPOLIS 38 - DENVER 20

This defense is a joke
Unbelievable! Dallas Clark just beat Champ Bailey. Are you kidding me?

Go Rockies!!!!!
By the way. It's the first time in a long, long while the Rockies have taken precedence over the Broncos on a Sunday.

KC
just tied the chargers.  I think it would make me feel good to see the chargers lose again.

Such a disappointment
Officially a rebuilding year. This defense is so remarkably bad it's unreal. Show some passion, some heart, at least compete a little bit for god sakes. I can't believe how bad we look this year. I'm not used to the Broncos sucking and it's hard to take.

by Make It Rain on Sep 30, 2007 4:37 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

i think the gameplan has been great on
both sides of the ball. The problem is that we don't have the players on defense to get it done.
Rod Smith is a Hall of Famer.

Exactly
Just that last drive, Burton was again getting blown away at the snap and occasionally driven back into Williams, Webster was overpursuing every run play, neither Ferguson nor Foxworth are taking good angels in run defense, and they've found no answer for whoever lines up in the slot.

Personnel, not scheme, adjustments are necessary.

by ohnokoolaid on Sep 30, 2007 4:43 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Webster is out of his depth
I said this after last weeks game.  Webster is just plain awful and he misses his gap assignments all the time.  We will have trouble with every team in the league with him starting for us.

by Tim Lynch on Sep 30, 2007 4:45 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree
maybe we just need to ignore Nicholson's character problems and just hope the talent shines through on the field.

Webster is just too out of control and when we aren't getting support up front clogging holes, we can't have the cutback defender outrunning the play.

by ohnokoolaid on Sep 30, 2007 4:47 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've never been so down on this team
They just look helpless. Virtually no cause for optimism what so ever.

you couldn't run against Denver but you could throw all day...now it seems like the opposite

by Donkey on Sep 30, 2007 4:50 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow, a tackle finally makes a play!
And Thomas looked good doing it.

It's amazing that this guy sits while a useless hack like Burton embarrasses himself.

by ohnokoolaid on Sep 30, 2007 4:53 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

what do you want to bet
that burton is inactive next week and Thomas gets the start.  Youngest starting D-line in the league?

Doom-Thomas-Crowder-Moss
Nice.

Beats a bunch of underachievers.

Engleberger-burton/gordon-adams-rice

Actually engleberger is an OVERachiever, but for him that isn't enough.

by Jeremy Bolander on Sep 30, 2007 4:59 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Adams will be back
he's been decent.  I think Thomas and Adams inside are our best bet right now.

In for a long season
For the first time in a while for the Broncos. It's weird. The Rockies and Broncos switched places this year.

by Make It Rain on Sep 30, 2007 4:58 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Too early to call
roughly a quarter of the way through the year, the Rockies looked finished.  The Broncos will be .500 at the same point.

Because we got beat by the Colts?
Come on...THINK!

With the way our division is playing, we still have PLENTY of time to recover, if at all possible, and make a run.

by WABronco on Sep 30, 2007 5:01 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

No not becasue we lost to the Colts
Because we just look pathetic. We are lucky not to be 0-4 right now. We have the worst defensive tackles in the game. Our front 7 is god awful. We can't stop the run. We have a young QB. Yeah our division sucks, and if we make the playoffs at 8-8 than great. But we will get bounced quickly and embarassingly in the first round. The good news is, I think we're a revamped front 7 away from being extremely good again. Cutler with another year under his belt, and the offense coming back intact as well. Shannahan has to figure it out personel wise, if not give up your GM tag.

by Make It Rain on Sep 30, 2007 5:06 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Technically no
But you should know better than to think he doesn't have the say.

by Make It Rain on Sep 30, 2007 5:12 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

True
We are still missing pieces.  But are the Colts really a fair barometer, if you will?  No, I don't think so.  There's still time.  Cinci went from being one of the worst run D's in the league to being among the top 5 in the second half.

In general, I'm getting the impression that everyone is expecting immediate results from our new coordinator.  Bates has only been able to make roughly 4 or 5 personnel changes, and only one by subtraction (3 draft picks, Adams, Warren trade).  He needs his players to make his system effective.  He had his players in Miami and they were dominant...

by WABronco on Sep 30, 2007 5:24 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why aren't the Colts a fair barometer?
I want to be the best. They are the best. Perfect barometer if you ask me. Anyway, next week against the Chargers is going to tell us all a lot. Even though the Chargers are struggling we've struggled to beat Buffalo and Oakland ourselves so a convincing win next week would go a long way in telling us that the Broncos aren't the team we've seen the past 2 weeks.

The defense is driving me crazy. Hopefully we can get Lynch back next week and make some adjustments in the run game. Do we ever miss the emotional leadership of Al Wilson or what? Never thought it'd be this bad. I hope this years draft and free agent pool are stacked with defensive tackles and linebackers.

Dont forget
safeties, kick returners and wr's.
To watch the Colts game or to not watch the Colts game? Tis the question my heart rate depends on.

by broncodude793 on Sep 30, 2007 7:57 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

True
Not really worried about Wide receiver. But safety is another pretty legitimate concern. Gotta build the trenches first though in my opinion.

And your right about the returner and special teams in general. I don't know what's been worse, the special teams or the defense.

by Make It Rain on Sep 30, 2007 8:33 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair question
Depends entirely on your expectations.  I have to say that I'm coming from a rather "reigned in" viewpoint.  We have questions that a Super Bowl contending team rarely has.

Using the Colts as a measuring stick isn't fair to the team, based off what I think they are.  To me, they're a 9-7, 10-6 playoff contender until proven otherwise.

If this was near the end of the year, and we're 13-2 with serious Super Bowl aspirations, then yea, it is a fair barometer to me.

Two 100yd rushers?
Even with us playing from behind?  I would like to think this would be cool.

meh.

Horrible call
he was throwing it to the line judge.

We don't need flags just because you don't want to pick it up...

by ohnokoolaid on Sep 30, 2007 5:03 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

He got tackled and tossed
it over his shoulder in the direction of the line judge, but it bounced away from him and he felt like he needed to assert some authority for some lame reason.

This new rule is rediculous because it isn't enforced properly.
