Mock Draft Database Info and Comments - UPDATE

UPDATE -- 2ND PAGE FOR FIRST ROUND ADDED!!! -- I am going to use this Diary to keep a running tab on the status of the Mock Draft Database, as well as give you a place to comment on the Mock Drafts.  Feel free to give you thoughts on a particular draft, or player we are drafting, and I'll use some of them in the database.

Due to limitations with the coding of the site, I have split the 1st Round into 2 pages --

Round 1, Page 1
Round 1, Page 2

I have cleaned up the Db, moving the most respected mock draft sites to the top of Page 1. These Mocks also seem to update more frequently. That said, here is where we stand after posting 49 Mock Drafts --

LB says 5, but the player count shows 4
Interesting.  I have no idea who will fall to us based on what other teams might go after.  I'm wondering if any teams above us will trade down (not with us).  That complicates things too.

This was under construction...
When you saw it....I subtracted one pick becuase it was a JR. that decided to go back to school(Maualuga).

My Choice.
I still like Kenny Phillips at #12.

by ejruiz on Jan 16, 2008 4:48 PM MST   0 recs

I am gradually moving this way
I would love to get a stud DT, but it does not look like we can do that at 12.

I have to be honest that part of my problem with Phillips is that he went to Miami.  I just kinda assume that anyone coming out of "The U" will have character/attitude issues.  But as I have been reading about Phillips, he does not seem to have any of those problems.

Phillips
So far he is my top choice, but there are several choices that I would feel excited about.

Michael Oher is returning to school
He has changed his mind after initially saying he was coming out.

He is also the kid profiled in Michael Lewis's book "Blind Side", which got mentioned in a diary a last week.

Phillips
I think I'm with Matt on this one.  I'd be happiest with a big-time DT that could form a partnership with Marcus Thomas for years to come.  Then again, as has been stated here in the past few weeks, it looks as though the Broncos could go after the Packers' DT and wrap up that need with a dependable guy.  If that's the case, I quite like the idea of taking Phillips, but I wonder if we could move down to 14 or 15 and still get him--not to mention nab a 3rd rounder.  Although a first round OL pick doesn't necessarily excite me (George Foster), I can see the reasoning, but I've only seen Clady play once and he seemed a bit of a lumberer.

My Two Cents.
I think it's more likely that Phillips goes before our pick than after.  The combine should even help him further, but the difference between him and the next safety in this draft is that considerable.  Safety, by the way, has proven to be a top 10 type position, if the prospect merits.

Good call.
You may well be right, EJ.  I seem to recall Landry taking a jump from the slots around ten right down to the Redskins (at 6, I believe) last year, but I might be wrong.

Trade Down?
I'm currently intrigued by Pat Sims (DT, Auburn) and was wondering if there was a reasonable scenario in which we would end up with him.  Thoughts?

by ejruiz on Jan 21, 2008 10:24 PM MST   0 recs

He is my choice too.
The guy is a bit raw, but he was still the next best thing in the SEC after Dorsey. By most estimates that I have seen, Sims will go somewhere between 20 and 40 (we pick 43 I think).

A nice trade would be to give Dallas our #12 and a 1st round next year for their #22 and #28. Between Rivers, Conner, Phillips, Mendenhall, Clady, and Baker, some one will slip to #22. Take him there. Then get Sims at #28. That would make my day.

Orange County is hot. Really! Haven't you seen the weather report?

Clady to Broncos.

Big surprise: no Phillips in the first round--at all.  The 'Phil's in there are Philip Merling (9) and the Philadelphia Eagles.

by ArturoBandini on Jan 23, 2008 8:51 AM MST   0 recs

Kiper.
I think his mock is now roundly... well, mocked.  Once the process moves along and his connections in front offices kick in, it will be better.  Phillips will be a first round pick, no doubt.

Don Banks' Draft forecast...
12  OT Ryan Clady Boise State Jr. 6-6 317
With the retirement of Matt Lepsis, finding a replacement at offensive tackle rises to the top of the Broncos' need list. Clady has tremendous size, but is still nimble enough in pass coverage thanks to his quick feet.

They have Kenny Phillips at #16!

Hopeful for a much better 2008!

by mdierk on Jan 24, 2008 11:03 AM MST   0 recs

My Boys.
Both Phillips and Dan Connor seem to be dropping in mock drafts.  Persoanlly, I think Kenny will shot back up after the combine, but Connor might continue to slip.  Ellis and Rivers, the two Trojans linked to the Braves, seem to be working their way out of our reach.  I honestly doubt that Clady falls to us as well.  I think we're in a tough spot and I'm not sure what we should do...

I think we are in great shape
We really can't lose (I wrote a story not too long ago about this).  It looks to me like ANY of the players that are available at 12 that we want are a major improvement for the team, and even if we trade down we get multiple picks.  If we're in a tough spot I think it is because we have so much to choose from.

In fact, I think the draft is deep enough in the positions we have a need for that we are bound to get several picks that should work out well.

I'm not putting too much stock in rising and falling names.  Often times the "experts" aren't familiar with the specific needs of a team (like player type).  In fact, click Guru's link for second round drafts.  Most of the expert sites don't even understand the rotational draft rule for tied teams, and don't understand that we have the 42nd pick.  That why I'm sticking with MHR for most of my draft news.

Another thing to take into account is that rising and falling stock based on intangibles often have little to do with our interests in certain players.  For example, Clady may not look so hot to some teams because they don't need an OT or they are looking at someone else.  But since he has fast feet the zone blocks teams would salivate for him.

Let's say Phillips stock is falling.  It could be because teams want something else.  BUT, the few teams that want him may want him badly.  I only care about how the Broncos rate a player, not the sports media in general.  Following the draft discussion on a team specific site (like MHR) is the best way to determine a player's stock for your own team in my opinion.
