Saw that the Donks are going to pass on Thomas... whew! Dodged a bullet there.

As for the receiver situation now, one possibility mentioned is the kid from AZ, Bryant Johnson. That would seem to be a good move if possible: the guy wants a chance to play more and he's young. Could form a good long-term tandem with Marshall.

Or so I'm told.

I like B Johnson
He was in a bad situation in Arizona and was never gonna get chances behind Fitzgerald and Boldin.  I did  some quick research and he seems to have good size and speed.  He's 6'3, 215 and ran a 10.65 100 meter dash in HS.  His pro day 40 times were 4.37 and 4.4 but he used a speed coach (supposedly he was closer to 4.57 before that).  Still, he sounds like a nice compliment to Marshall and Stokely, if the price is right.

In your salary cap research
have you assigned a particular value to Denver's next few years, as far as what kind of wiggle room we may have?

I am wondering if a guy like Bryant Johnson could be signed to a 3yr or so contract, with a heavy first year, and then significantly lighter hits on the remaining years.  Not necessarily as a form of damage control, but in an effort to capitalize on his production if he turns out to be as good as hinted at.  Or would we be better served to offer a more evened-out deal?

It seems that the first option would be more attractive to prospective free agents, what with Denver cutting 80% of the guys they have signed in the past two years...

I am working on that
I have a spreadsheet that has the details for every Bronco's contract and what the cap values will be for the life of the deal.  It will never be 100% accurate due to workout and roster bonuses as well as incentives, but it should be a decent guideline.  I have a few players to finish up, but then I will post what I believe to be the state of the Broncos cap for 2008 and beyond  (I was thinking maybe the cap value of each player in 2008 and then the number of players and the total cap value by position for each of the next 3 years)

Off the top of my head, I would say that the current players under contract eat up about $98 million of the $116 million cap for 2008.  The team needs about $4.5 million in cap room to sign their draft picks as well as money to sign their restricted FA's (Abdullah, Myers, Foxworth and Paymah) and any unrestricted FA's (Elam, Ekuban, Engelberger)  I am not gonna try to project what type of contract they will offer to each, although it looks like Abdullah will get a long term deal while the others will get one year contracts.

Actually Thomas passed on us,
which I still thank the lucky stars for that. ;)

Agreed
We need youth and OLBs, not old and MLB.

He was the complete
and utter opposite of what we were looking for!

It has been Bill Williamson of the Post who has been noting that Denver is looking at all these free agents.  It isn't hard to figure out what is going on...Williamson needs an easy article so he does what he does best:  state the obvious.

Denver looks at EVERY free agent of note on the market.  It doesn't cost a penny to look, and frankly, I think Denver's scouting department could use the work...
