Javon Walker As Good As Gone

Ok, even I will admit it.  Javon Walker will not be a Bronco very much longer.  Whether it is by by trade or simply his outright release Walker will not be back.  I had hoped that despite Walker's comments that the team and the player would find a way to coexist.  That appears impossible now, which leads us to believe just how bad it had gotten in the locker room.

It is now apparent that the Broncos feel they have a legitimate #1 receiver in Brandon Marshall and will look to add a complimentary player to Marshall and Brandon Stokley, perhaps through Free Agency or the draft. Walker wants to be a #1 somewhere, and that just wasn't going to happen in Denver in 2008.

As was discussed in This Diary, Tampa appears to be the first team the Broncos have had any type of substantial conversations with regarding Walker.  The two teams have played nicely in the past and Walker in Pewter and Maroon certainly makes some sense. If a trade cannot be worked out, rest assured the Broncos will simply cut Walker by March 4th when his $5.4 million bonus comes due.  Either way, Walker's days as a Bronco are over.

Sigh...what a disappointment...
I'm a bit disappointed in this.  I think our offense could have been a monster with Marshall and Walker on both sides and not to mention Stokely for the slot.  BUT...Walker opened his big fat mouth...  I was a big fan of Walker even before he came to Denver.  I got to see him play twice a year when they played the Lions (I'm in Michigan, so they play their games unfortunately).  I thought Walker could have been big in Denver.  Heck I was probably one of the first ones to have a couple Walker jerseys when they started selling 'em not to mention my girlfriend bought me one of them nice grey/orange jerseys last (2007) Christmas.  What a waste he's become in Denver.  I was hoping he would think about what he said some and change his mind.  If he goes elsewhere, I hope he flops just like Lelie did when he opened his mouth. :)

Maybe we can draft the....
kid from Oklahoma who is 6'4 and almost Marshall's size.
We are all undefeated now!

The only teams I see Walker being happy
playing for on that short list provided in the Denver Post article are Tampa Bay, San Francisco, and Chicago.  The rest of those teams have legit #1 Wide Receivers and we all know how prima donna Javon Walker will react to that deal.

I have now lost all respect for that bizatch.  Grow the F up man.

Will He Really Be That Happy in Tampa Bay?
Joey Galloway seems to be ageless and has a good rapport with Garcia.  I could even see him whining there, since Galloway will probably be the clutch/outlet receiver, and is still somewhat of a deep threat.

To be honest, who cares?
If we get something for him then it doesn't really matter anymore. ;)  I think Walker would see Galloway as a non threat because of his age.  Walker saw Marshall as a threat because Marshall was younger and BETTER than him.

Some salary cap info
At first glance, it seems crazy that Denver would take a $6.8 million hit to get rid of Walker when his cap figure for 2008 would only be $5.55 million of they kept him and paid him the bonus money.  But I think if you look at his salaries/cap numbers over the rest of his contract it makes a bit more sense.

           Cap/Salary              Cap/salary               Cap/salary            Cap/salary
Year     current deal            if cut today               cut next year         cut post June 1,2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008     $5.55(7.6)               $6.8(0)                    $5.55(7.6)             $5.55(7.6)
2009     $9.05(5.7)               0                             $8.85(0)                $3.35(0)
2010     $9.30(5.95)             0                             0                           $5.50(0)
2011     $8.95(6.8)               0                             0                           0

From a purely salary cap perspective, I would say Denver should keep him for 2008 and then decide if they want to release him (post June 1).  But I am not the one shelling out $7.6 million to Javon and I don't have a real feel for how he will fit in the locker room.

Walker needs a fresh start
I don't want to over defend Walker, but something that hasn't been mentioned is what he went through with DWill on New Year's Eve.  If I put myself in his shoe's I would probably want to move on as well.
