Big News - Shaun Rogers
UPDATE 2 -- The trade talks are still coming in from multiple sources. Now Dewayne Robertson is in the mix. He is not a good fit with Mangini's 3-4 defense, though he might fit well in a 4-3. Rogers would be a good nose tackle for Mangini, how about a 3 way trade? We send something to Detroit, they send Rogers to the Jets, the Jets send us Robertson. We'd need to restructure that $11 million contract though. Way overpaid!
END UPDATE 2
UPDATE -- Things don't appear to be as "solid" as they were a few hours ago. The article below has been updated with the following --
All expectations are that enigmatic defensive tackle Shaun Rogers will be gone from Detroit by the time the trading period opens 10 p.m. Thursday. The Denver Broncos are among the suitors aggressively pursuing the two-time Pro Bowl selection, and at one point Monday, appeared to perhaps be on the verge of acquiring the 6-foot-4 interior defender. But other teams continue making their pitches. And Denver now doesn’t appear to be in the clear.
The Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all are trying to fortify their front fours. And the Lions are marketing Rogers aggressively around the league before the start of the new NFL calendar. Rogers’ agent, Kennard McGuire, said he wouldn’t confirm or deny any trade speculation regarding his client.
What is apparent in league circles is that Rogers will be playing elsewhere next season. His battles with weight in particular have apparently worn out Detroit coach Rod Marinelli to the point where a change of scenery would benefit both parties. And there are enough competitors for Rogers’ services that compensation should be sufficient.
Rogers, 28, had his best game last season against Denver, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors with 2 1/2 sacks and a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown. He also had a career-high seven sacks for the season. But he faded the final eight games as Detroit went 1-7 and was reportedly well over his listed 340 pounds, which adversely affected his already balky knees.
Denver also is one of the teams that is pursuing New York Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, a former top-10 pick who’s being made available since he’s a poor fit as a 3-4 nose tackle and comes at a hefty price.
END UPDATE
I do not really think this guy is a good fit for us, but it looks like we will be cutting a deal to bring this big man onto our team.
I guess it's a good thing because he did have a great game against us last year.

Both cities reporting basically the same thing. Either everyone is being highly speculative or people within both organizations are running their mouths to the wrong people. ;)
The Broncos are in aggressive discussions to trade for Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. If no hitches develop, the trade is expected to be done as early as tonight or early Tuesday.
It's unclear what the Broncos would give the Lions for Rogers, 28, a University of Texas product.
The 6-foot-4, 340-pounder has drawn the ire of Lions general manager Matt Millen because of weight problems. Millen has said the former Pro Bowl selection could be fined if the issue isn't resolved.
The Broncos' biggest trade last offseason came with the Lions, who sent defensive back Dre' Bly to Denver for offensive tackle George Foster and running back Tatum Bell.

I'm not convinced that this will help in the long run.

It appears everyone here
Mike must not watch a lot of game film, only the game in which Rogers kicked our arse up and down the field. Sorry Mike, that was ONE game!

Oy
Pickups like this are why I have been suspicious of the Bowlen/Shanahan two-headed hydra for a while now. I guess we did rob the Lions blind once for Bly, so I suppose they're trying to do it again. Sigh...

Maybe Denver is seeking Revange?
They said they wanted Wilson, and then they left Denver hanging high and dry...
Well, maybe we will do all the talk, and then back off at the last moment. Yah, that would be nice (and very mature, I assure you).

Anyone notice
On the other hand, we have yet to see what kind of deal they are pitching. I hope that it is a short one, ideally only for a year. Rogers has something to prove next year if he is on a short contract, and we could dump him regardless of how he performs, for someone else to take a long term chance on later.
At best he is a one year option. Is that even possible for Denver to do?

Well, one of the nice things about trading
In theory I would not be completely opposed to trading a fourth rounder for Rogers and pay him the 4+ million this year since we can cut him after the year without any penalties. Maybe even make it conditional so that we send Detroit another 3rd or 4th round pick if Rogers is still on the roster in 2009. (FYI - that $4million is similar to what Gerard Warren's contract called for)

Wow
Simply put, we don't have one starting-caliber defensive tackle going into next year. Compared to other teams in the league, we also have a pretty apparent dearth of talent in the front 7.
In my mind, both Rogers and Robertson make a ton of sense given the layout of our team and our goals. Shanahan is obviously ALWAYS looking to be a competetive team in the tough AFC, and to do that we need more established, talented players....especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Rogers is immensely talented. I find it kind of amusing that he goes from being talked up as being the best and most explosive tackle in the league one year to being a lazy-ass retread who's not worth a dime the next. His work ethic issues are cause for concern, just based off previous experience with these types. But, if we want to take a jump on D and make an attempt to be a playoff contendor, we need to take these types of risks.
In my opinion, the only concern here should be the compensation Detroit would get. Money isn't an issue, and shouldn't be perceived as one. The cap is skyrocketing and that sure isn't going to reign Shanny and his obviously reckless spending in. I actually like that, on top of the fact that he's never been afraid to cut bait on a mistake. I fully expect Detroit to ask for a 2nd round pick, but can you imagine what a boon it would be to pry this guy away with a 3rd or a package of later picks?
And, just to make myself clear, in no way am I advocating widespread additions of free agents or trade acquisitions to patch our numerous holes. We do need to draft and develop at many positions. But, honestly, DT is and has been a giant blackhole that's been sucking our defense into oblivion for the last few years. Given our new DC and new scheme, I think it's a good idea to bring in a guy like Rogers or Robertson to give us that much desired, potential rock in the middle in the short term (as opposed to developing one).

The biggest risk
And even before the season roles around, if we land Rogers, how does Denver approach one of the richest crops of DT we have seen in several years? Balmer, Sims, Laws are all good pickups and will be available when Denver is picking in their prospective areas of the draft...it would be a shame to pass on any of these young men.

Exactly
I think it's a fair addition - of course it depends on the price - everything does.

For a 2nd round pick?!?!?
I would absolutely prefer they get after Robertson. He's younger and there's no comparison when it comes to character. Rogers doesn't just disappear for stretches during a game, he disappears for gameS (yes, plural) in a row. He is a prime example of what the Broncos do NOT need to be building with right now. If they were coming off an 11-5 season with 2 established DT's in place and looking for depth, I could see it. But, does anyone seriously think this should be the guy setting the example for how to be a pro for 2 or more young DT's they'll be drafting this year? It would serve this team's long-term interests better to get someone who may not have top shelf ability, but has a good motor, is a hard-worker and has a lot of heart rather than vice-versa.
