Ted Sundquist Out As General Manager

The Broncos have announced that Ted Sundquist is no longer with the team, effective immediately.  From Denver Broncos.com --

The Denver Broncos have announced that General Manager Ted Sundquist is no longer with the team, effective immediately.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan said, "I am grateful to Ted for all his hard work and efforts on behalf of the Broncos for the past 16 years. Now is the time for our organization to move forward and look at new directions. We are prepared to do so, starting with our ongoing draft planning, and along with continuing preparations for our mini-camps and training camp."

Director of Player Personnel Jim Goodman and Assistant General Manager Jeff Goodman each will have more prominent roles in football operations, while Joe Ellis, recently named as Chief Operating Officer of the Broncos, will assist on operational and administrative issues related to football.

Egads, I hope not...
From the PFT guys speaking on Sundquist:

"Our guess?  Given that the Broncos dumped Sundquist before the draft, the Raiders might quickly come calling, if for no reason other than to find out what Denver is planning for the rookie selection weekend."

As for Sundquist
This is really a shock to me.  These last few drafts have seemed to go really well.  Also Sundquist just posted his own blog on the Bronco's website and he mentioned Shanahan, but never in a negative way.

I wonder who we will get to take over? Someone inside the organization?  Or, maybe A.J. Smith :)

I'm shocked too
and for the same reason, that the last several drafts have gone well and everything I've read has seemed to indicate that Shanahan and Sundquist got along really well together. I HAVE wondered why the last three drafts have been so much better than the four preceding them. Has there been a shift in who makes the personnel decisions, and if so was that towards or away from Shanahan? Who made the bad decisions from 2001-4? Sundquist? Shanahan? Bowlen? Some combination of the above? Who made the decision to bring in a defensive guru last year when our personnel obviously didn't fit his scheme? Who was the driving force behind signing all those expensive free agents and who's behind the clear shift in direction? Does all this have anything to do with Sundquist's departure? I guess I'm wondering, and probably everybody else is too, WHY Sundquist is leaving and/or being forced out. If the latter, what is he specifically being blamed for? Oh yes, I'd love to see A.J. Smith here, especially if Bowlen lets him BE the general manager and leaves Shanahan to concentrate on coaching.

Thats pretty sad that you would.....
eliminate a great discussion.  I guess the truth hurts for Donkey fans.  I thought that Donkey fans had thicker skin, and a better ability debate, but it appears that you are just scared to have a debate, especially when the logic is so sound and backed up with so much evidence.  

I don't think I have ever seen an entire discussion taken off a blog.  You have to be pretty embarrassed in your team to do something like that.  WOW!  At least Raider fans would never puss out on a discussion, looks like the Donkeys aren't the same.

definitely, we don't remove diaries as
as a general matter of policy.  Anyone who wants to go at it with you can enter at their own risk, and broncos fans who just want the news won't be bothered.  I highly encourage diary entries from you Sneaky.

In fact, I have a request, if you can fulfill it.  A lot of Broncos fans have an intense distaste for Al Davis, but I think they could gain an appreciation for the current state of the raiders franchis if they understood better just how influential and GOOD Davis used to be.  Who better to enlighten the masses than a raider fan?

...would also be appropriate in the next University story, where I'll discuss zone blocking and put some emphasis on cut blocks.  I'll cover the legality, as well as ethical considerations.  In a University story I always leave an open call for questions or comments relating to any aspect of football techniques or tactics, so there isn't a limit to staying on topic (though there are reasonable, civil limits).

A diary on the matter with an opposing opinion would be terrific, and a welcome addition to the site.  

It's not (and never has been) about "group think".  I wouldn't go to the raider site and bash the raiders for crippling Darryl Stingley for life under a comment thread dealing with the hiring of a new punter.  The only reason I would leave a comment on their site would be to express condolences for a death, injury, or illness, or to express congratulations for a wedding or birth.

This is as bad as it could get, unless ...
... we bring in the Patriots' or Ravens' GM.

Really, many of us thought that Ted was the force behind the recent upward trend in our draft. This just can't be good, and a month before the draft too.

I assume that Shanny and Ted just didn't see eye to eye on personnel/draft strategy moving forwards. If it was me, and I really thought that Shanny was making a huge mistake and wouldn't budge, then I would give an ultimatum. My way as GM or fire me. Why get all the bad rap for someone else's mistakes?

I am just really nervous right now.

Its for the best
if shanny is the real problem than nothing will get him out faster than exposing him without the complicating factors of multiple decision makers.

If Shanny isn't the problem, then excising conflicting parts is the right way to go.

Either way what we are getting is going to be pure, undiluted Shanny Lightning.  It'll either go down smooth as silk or rougher than potato moonshine.  No more in between, and hopefully no more confusion.
