Finally, a good NFL rule!

Not sure about a rule, but...

I disagree...
If a guy wants long hair, who has the freaking right to tell him to cut it??
If a guy doesn't want to wear his seat belt, who has the freaking right to make him pay the state money for not doing so?
If a guy doesn't want to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, who has the right to make him pay the state for not doing so?
Pretty soon, everyone will need to wear the same color clothes, have the same hair cut, wear helmets while walking along the street, ect ect ect. Screw the nanny state and their undeclared war upon COMMON SENSE! :P
Back on topic here, obviously that touch a nerve with me, but I don't see how the NFL can regular length of hair. Safety concern or not, it's the kind of risk that NFL players must choose to either live with or change their hair length.

There is a difference...
While I am in 100% agreement with you on public policy, the NFL is a private business and has every right to make their own rules. They have to look at it from the standpoint of what is best for business. Now, this rule is debatable in that sense, but it's their call. I, for one, support that right. It's one reason why, even though I personally don't smoke, I support a business' right to allow smoking in their establishment. (I won't even get started on the completely unsupported and overblown BS known as the "dangers of second-hand smoke")
by MN Bronco on Mar 21, 2008 10:37 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I quite smoking 3 months ago
I do agree that exposure to second hand smoke at a bar or other public place is totally overblown. Second hand smoke is a deadly killer when it is prolonged exposure.
I am so glad I can play basketball again without being near death afterwards. :) Chantix! Take it to quit smoking, it works! I smoked a pack and a half a day and took Chantix for just three weeks and haven't needed any medication since I stopped taking Chantix. No patched, pills, gum...addiction is GONE baby!! ;)

I need to correct a confusing sentence above..
Change that too:
My wife and I never smoked indoors because we have a kid...regardless of wether or not our daughter was home or not. ;)

It might be overblown for us patrons...
but not so much for the employees who have to work there day in and day out to make a living. I applaud the anti-smoking cities for becoming anti-smoking for that reason.
Well... that and so I don't have to wash my clothes after hanging out at a bar for 2 hours.

I like the rule
To me the long hair detracts from the uniformity and aesthetics of a football player, the same way that overweight linemen's bellies and David Carr's white gloves ruin the image.
I like the look of a team that is in unity, each soldiering forth for the other, with each one's claim to individuality being made solely in their actions and accountability on the field. To compare, I watch tennis a lot, and there are lots of wild hairdos there that I never give a second thought to.
There is a reason the uniforms and helmets and socks and gloves are all the same (barring for minor things like visors and what not). I never understood why anyone would want to grow their hair out, making themselves standout among their teammates. You'd think the nature of your job was more important than your hairdo... The beauty of a teamsport lies in that many people doing that complex of an action towards a common goal, and doing it together. The uniforms are symbolic of that, and the hair seems to be symbolic of its antithesis.

for a roughneck, hydro plant building
I might just have to grow my hair out to unbelieveable lengths now. Then tie it back in a pony tail like some stoner. :)

Individualism is numero uno!
Belongs in a diary, which I will write just as soon as I get some other things cleared off my plate. :)

And you get an A+ for the hair "tuck rule" comment further upthread. Still smiling from that one!

Yea, I used to be a Conservative...
Remember, $10 Trillion doesn't seem as big until you spell it out. $10,000,000,000,000. Welcome to our national debt ladies and gentlemen. :)
I guess I am not a libertarian..more of a "small government" conservative. Not many of those kinds left in the Republican Party these days.
I still say that if some moron likes having hair coming out of his helmet then so be it. The NFL should make "hair tackling" legal and encourage other players to go after it. You'd see a lot less big hair around the league right quick. ;)

Big hair
I agree that the GOP has left its roots of economic conservatism (and has again selected a half-conservative candidate for pres.) On the other side, the dems are moving away from classical American liberalism and more towards radical leftism. I have a hard time with libertarianism (beyond some strange ideological problems) because they always put someone up for national office with troubling backgrounds. (Don't even get me started on R. Paul). Even with a masters in poli sci, I have grown sick of the political silliness in our country by all sides, and find more comfort at MHR than political sites.
With football I have a team I can believe in, a team I can dislike, and much in between. With politics I find more and more hate and less and less academic exchanges of differing opinions. I've dropped all of the time I used to devote to political sites, and come back home to bluer and oranger (sic) pastures.
That's why I didn't care for the recent troll infestation (all of that blind hate), and a reason I really hope a lot of the political talk that is creeping in dies out quietly (even as I spend a paragraph on the subject myself). : )

Ditto...
I won't even talk about the Dems....I'd love to deport their asses back to the former-Soviet Union.
In any case, I'll end this side bar for now...otherwise I won't be able to stop running my, uh, mouth(fingers?) for a while.

Elam wears Red and Black
Even though I would have liked to see Elam stay in Denver, and Morten Andersen stay in Atlanta, I think it is OK that we didn't match the offer.

a few things
I am real concerned how the dems are leaning towards socialism and following the radical left. Its a bad move. I am for less government and more social freedoms, and all the pc BS in this country is bugging the crap out of me. What has made this country prosper is less govt in our daily lives.
