With The First Pick In The 2008 MHR Community Mock Draft...

The Miami Dolphins select.....

CHRIS LONG, DE(Virginia)

G.M. -- Hercules Rockefeller -- Since our attempt to fool Atlanta into thinking we're taking Matt Ryan here has failed, we're going with the stud DE from VA.  He's the safest player in the draft and a perfect fit for our 3-4.  We like Vernon Gholston's "measurables" but we're betting on him being the next Mike Mamula.  We know we're thin pretty much everywhere on offense, and we love Jake Long, but we need help immediately and O-linemen (even as good as Long is) take at least a year or two to develop.

Signed,
Bill Parcells

The first pick is in....Give your thoughts in the comments.  The St. Louis Rams, represented by ramsfan is on the clock!

Chris Long is the obvious choice,
but I just can't help but think he will never be as good as his father was.  Unless he is of the Peyton Manning/Eli Manning vareity who makes their father look like a second rate hack at QB.  Or is Chris going to be like Jack Elway, not even close to the greatness of the father.  ;)

True, but Howie is a Hall of Famer
That is a high standard to live up to.  Chris can be a multi year Pro Bowler which would justify his choice at number 1 overall, and still never be the player his dad was.

Good solid choice.  If you are a bad team with a high pick, they key is to not miss completely and get a complete bust.  Chris Long was one of a few players in the draft that met that criteria.

A little hard on the kid aren't ya?
He probably won't be as good as his Dad, but even if he's only as good as Jason Taylor this is the right choice.

I wasn't being hard on him...
I only said what if.  ;)  He could be the Peyton Manning type or the Jack Elway type.  I should replace Jack Elway with Chris Simms since Elway is too young to be beated down. ;)

The only thing I would disagree with
Is the comment about lineman taking time to develop.  Top 5 tackles can step in right away and help - look at D'Brickashaw Ferguson or Joe Thomas.  Still, can't compain with the Chris Long pick.  But just saying...

by MattR on Mar 27, 2008 10:21 AM MDT   0 recs

ok, but
for every D'Brickashaw Ferguson or Joe Thomas (two guys that I think it's way too early to make a judgement on), there's a Mike Wiliams or a Robert Gallery.

It's a crap-shoot like you said.  Make sure you're not giving $30M in guaranteed money to a bust and consider yourself lucky.

Busts happen at every position
I wish I knew the secret to avoiding them :)

But the two OTs I mentioned definitely helped their teams their rookie years.  I guess my point is that a top 5 OT has a pretty similar chance of contributing immediately as a top 5 DE.

Not that I wouldn't have taken Chris with the pick.

I agree, just look at the absurd
trade rumours for Dewayne Robertson.  A #4 pick who believes he is worth $11 million a year, but by all accounts he is a bust.  He wouldn't have been considered a bust if he had been drafted in the 3rd round, but he was the #4 pick overall...he should have been dominant.

I am glad we didn't pick him up, even half of $11 million is too much for this guy.

Interesting Pick
Given that Jason Taylor might be in better shape than Lance Armstrong, its hard to argue that this is a distinctive need for the Dolphins.

That said, Parcell's isn't going to blow his pick on someone who isn't going to deliver on the ginormous contract he's going to get.  Long is arguably the best guy available in the draft and DE/CB are easily the two toughest positions to fill on defense.

I think that Parcell's will take whoever he thinks is the best guy available, regardless of position--as he should.  Good pick.

Just a feeling,
and a baseless feeling at that, but I think the Dolphins deal Taylor during the draft.

Traded Down?
I was wondering if the Dolphins would trade the #1 down for a bunch of lower picks.  They need help in so many different areas; the Chargers did that with M. Vick pick which worked out pretty well.

I'm sure
that Zappa(Atlanta) was getting some pretty interesting emails about trading down.

I hope he saved some of them! ;)

I wish my sig was as cool as mdierks!

Actually,
I didn't.  lol  I looked at the draft charts, but after Atlanta aquired Oakland's second round pick I noticed that I have 3 picks in the first two rounds. lol  Also, I think I've got 5 or 6 picks in the first 100 if we go that far.

I had
no offers.  Granted, I didn't make any, but I didn't get any either.  I'm betting the "real" Dolphins stay put at #1 anyway.

Another Reason.
Personally, I think that Jake Long was the way to go, but Chris Long is definitely a solid choice.  If you consider that they're about equal as prospects and ignore the depth of need at their positions for Miami, then you have to go with the guy at a more prominent position.  DE's get a lot of media attention and fan adulation.  They put up measurable stats and take part in exciting plays.  They can mark the end of plays and drives.  It's a good move for a fanbase that has a right to be upset about their management.
