The Loss Of Jason Elam Isn't A Big Deal....It Just Isn't!

For those of you who listened to MHR Radio last night, a lot of this will be re-hash.  Feel free to move on to the next post.  If not, then I hope to bring some enlightenment to the Jason Elam situation.  The Broncos, both internally and externally, have been getting killed for letting Elam walk.  One of the most consistent kickers in NFL history, and one of the last link to the Broncos' "glory years", Elam was an obvious fan favorite.  He has become, it seems, the ultimate example of everything that is wrong in the Broncos front office.  A pariah of sorts, with his departure signaling a `gloom and doom' scenario.  I suppose it is to be expected, coming off one of the most disappointing seasons in recent Broncos history, with Elam being responsible for a majority of the bright spots.

While I hate to see any of "the greats" leave the team, we also must keep it in perspective.  My first thought when it became apparent that Elam was unlikely to return was simply, "who cares, he's a kicker".  That may seem like an ignorant thought, the thought of someone who doesn't know much about football.  Kickers are vital, just ask Patriots fans.  They aren't that critical, however, that any team should overpay to keep them.  Even Jason Elam, as consistent as he has been over the past 15 years, becomes expendable at some point, and the Broncos made the right move in letting him leave.  It is better to part with a player 1 season too soon than 1 season too late.  Ask the Chiefs.  Elam is a perfect example.

Hopefully I can explain.

Star-divide

First, we'll start with the stats.  I chose to look at the 4 years prior to Elam's arrival compared to Elam's first 4 seasons in Denver.  David Treadwell was the incumbent kicker from 1989 - 1992.  Below are his numbers for each season, looking at field goals only -

David Treadwell --

1989 - 27/33 - 81.8%
1990 - 25/34 - 73.5%
1991 - 27/36 - 75.0%
1992 - 20/24 - 83.3%

Total - 99/127 - 77.9%

Notice that Treadwell's final season in Denver, 1992, was his best, percentage wise.  Overall, Treadwell made close to 78% of his field goals as a Bronco.  Solid numbers to say the least.
Now let's take a look at Jason Elam's first 4 seasons with the Broncos -

Jason Elam --

1993 - 26/34 - 74.0%
1994 - 30/37 - 81.1%
1995 - 31/38 - 81.6%
1996 - 21/28 - 75.0%

Total - 108/139 - 77.6%

Surprising.  The numbers are nearly identical, with Treadwell actually outkicking Elam by a chain link.  Now, I'm not saying that David Treadwell is a better kicker than Jason Elam.  Not at all.  What I am trying to show is that the Elam wasn't that much better, as a great kicker, than Treadwell, who most don't give a second thought too.  Don't confuse longevity with greatness, especially in football where the two are closely linked(see Brett Favre).

"But Guru...Elam won four games for us last year.  If we don't get solid kicking it could be the difference between making the playoffs, or getting a home playoff game!"

Maybe, but not likely.  Case in point is Jason Elam's 5th season, 1997.  The Broncos just happened to win the Super Bowl, winning two road playoff games before beating the heavily favored Packers in SB XXXII.  Elam must have had a solid season, right?  Let's look -

1997 - 26/36 - 72.2%

Whoa.  1997 was Jason Elam's worst season of his career to that point, yet the Broncos were World Champs.  The Broncos, of course, had a lot of other things going for them, mainly John Elway and Terrell Davis.  Despite Elam's struggles, the Broncos were able to finish 12-4 and win a Super Bowl.  Not bad for having a "bad kicker", at least that season.  If the Broncos don't make the playoffs, or are relying on their kicker to win game after game after game it is an indication that they aren't a really good football team, which was definitely the case in 2007.  The only reason the Broncos were in the situation they were time after time in '07 was because they couldn't hold onto leads(Oakland/Pittsburgh) or underachieved until the 4th Quarter(Buffalo).

The loss of Jason Elam is more about emotion, more about trying to hold onto the past, than X's and O's on the field.  I am fine with all that.  I love watching the America's Game DVD's as much as anyone.  But there comes a time when you have to turn the page and move on.  Jason Elam had become a one-trick pony  -- (pun intended) - becoming more and more a 40-yards and in kicker.  Kick-off responsibilities were pulled a long time ago, forcing the Broncos to use their punter in a dual role or waste a roster spot on 3 kickers.   When the Broncos were winning 10-13 games a season, they could afford to do that.  As built right now, they cannot.

Whether they let Matt Prater give it a go, or bring in Olindo Mare, whom they offered a contract to yesterday, the Broncos will likely go with a place-kicker who can also kick-off, and do it well.  For his part, Mare was still leading the league in touchbacks as recently as 2006.  Prater boomed 75% of his limited opportunities last season into the end-zone.  The Broncos defense will be better for it.

For one second, let's assume that the Broncos' kicker, whoever it is, misses a few more field goals than Elam usually does.  While that is a number we can grab onto, one that we cannot grasp is how many points a kicker can save by pinning a team back at their 20 over and over again.  Don't believe me?  Look at the Broncos offense, owners of the worst starting field position the past two seasons.

As for Elam, I wish him the best.  He has gone where all great kickers go to extend their career.  A dome.  Elam knows he cannot last forever, and he knows that the pressure in Denver was only going to intensify.  By going to Atlanta, for more money and years, Elam gets the best of both worlds.  9 games in a controlled environment, for big bucks, in a town where a Georgia practice gets more pub.  Not a bad deal.  I hope he continues his streak of 100 point seasons and kicks until he's 50, like Gary Anderson and Morton Anderson, just not for the Broncos, for that money, where he can do nothing more than kick 38 yard field goals.  If the Broncos take care of the rest of the roster, the numbers show Elam can be replaced.  To their credit, the Broncos did it 1 season too soon, instead of 1 season too late.

Emotional.
I think we all have a sometimes irrational liking for certain players.  I don't think anyone is upset because this hurts our team now or in the future, but rather because he was a link to past greatness (both for the team and for him individually).  Elam was always a Bronco and now he won't be; while that may make football sense, it still stings a little bit.

Hmm...
I don't agree that Elam was, by any stretch of the imagination, an average kicker.  For his career, he's hit 80.6% of his field goals.  Inside the 40, he's missed 16 of his 276 attempts in his career.  Make no mistake: this is a hall of fame kicker.  He's had an outstanding career.

How's he been lately?  Well, in the last 2 years, Elam has been more accurate than all but one kicker (Ryan Lindell).  I don't need to embellish you with how many game winners he's hit for us over that span.

I live in Washington, D.C. and am surrounded by Redskin's fans.  To see that team struggle (some years I think they'd have won 11-12 games instead of 7-8 if they'd had a decent kicker) with finding a solution at kicker has me a little bit nervous.

Now, I don't agree that Denver made some kind of an atrocious management decision.  Elam said he wasn't going to allow Denver to match the highest bid.  They made their offer, Atlanta made their offer, and Elam took the highest one.  At $4 million guaranteed for a guy who costs 2 roster slots (because he doesn't kick off), that's WAY too expensive.  Would Denver have matched, given the chance?  Bowlen's behavior suggests to me they would have, but we'll never know.

Let's all hope that they give Prater a shot.  Olindo Mare was nothing short of atrocious in a dome last season.  He's got one of the best legs in the league on kickoffs, but so does Matt Prater.  In fact, Prater lead the league in touchback percentage last season, albeit on 11 attempts.

I never...
implied that Elam was 'average'.  I was just pointing out that the difference between an "average" kicker and one that is perceived "great" is alot thinner than alot of people believe.  It was definitely nice to plug Elam in at kicker for 15 years and forget about it.  But the time has come to move on, and I'd rather do it now than later...

It's not just
losing Elam in itself that hurts...obviously, there are the sentimental facets, and we all identify Elam with the Broncos - it's been fifteen years, after all! But we've all grown very accustomed to having a strong-legged, consistent and clutch kicker. Now, where are we going to find a suitable replacement? It doesn't seem there's one in the draft. Worse, that guy was very clearly available last year - Colorado's own Mason Crosby (who went for a mid-6th round pick). I don't think this is so much second-guessing, because I'm sure there were plenty of us (including myself) who saw him kick for CU and thought "My, what a perfect replacement he will be for Elam someday. What? His contract is up next year? Perfect, let's draft Crosby for kickoffs and next year he'll be our guy on the cheap!"

Great piece...
I'm not fully convinced yet, though.

But it makes sence, that if you have to rely on your kicker to win a game, you're not a good footballteam - not good enough at least. And with Broncos in sort af a rebuildmode, it would be silly to have to get a new kicker in, when the primeyears are kicking in in about 1-2-3 seasons...

You have accomplished one thing, though: I now see, that Elam wasn't a ideal fit for us (anymore). I still think we need a quality-upgrade on the position, but i do feel better about the release of Elam.

From Denmark, so i excuse my self for un-knowing-ness...

A not wonderful comparison
Would be going to Jay Cutler half way through 2006.  better to get the growing pains out of the way in a year we are not gonna be Super Bowl competitive (or at least it looks that way right now)

Bronco fans have definitely been spoiled by 15 years of Elam, but some of us remember back past Elam (and even David Treadwell) to the barefoot wonder Rich Karlis.  In 1986 and 87 the Broncos reached the Super Bowl with Karlis as the kicker.  He was 20 for 28 (71.4%) in 1986 and 18 of 25 (72%) in 1987.  Karlis was truly a heart attack to watch, clunking crucial kicks off the uprights (some went in, some didn't).  In Super Bowl 21 he had the dubious distinction of making a 48 yd FG to put Denver up 3-0 which tied a record for longest in a Super Bowl.    He then missed a 23 yarder on his next attempt to set a record for shortest miss in a Super Bowl.

I join the Guru.  I will miss Elam and wish him well.  But his presence or absence will not make or break this team.

I knew you would have a take...
But Elam's stats the year we won the Super Bowl show that you don't need stellar placekicking to win big.  It just needs to be timely.

Having a Super Bowl caliber team helps as well....

see my comment above
It is almost like Denver needs the K to have a crappy year to make the SB.  In 1977, Jim Turner was 13 for 19 (68.4%).  Treadwell was 27 of 33 for a decent 81.8% in 1989 and Elam had a season in 1998 that was the exception that proves the rule going 23 for 27 (85.2%)

Should I be rooting for Matt Prater to hit 18 of 24 all year?  Is that the key to a Bronco Super Bowl run?

In all seriousness there is probably something to be said for having that extra push to score a TD and not settle for a FG.  It is just natural for both the players and coaches became a bit more conservative knowing that three points was automatic with Elam.

Yea, I had a take....but
you've started to turn me over to the dark side.  I'm not nearly as upset over his departure as I feel I should be. lol

I am in the who cares
He is a kicker club. I do realize the importance of a good kicker, but he could not kick off. That bothers me. Also, I dont understand why the Broncos can never get kickers to boom the ball of of the endzone at home. If we are a mile hi, then use it tou aour advantage. I think that if the Broncos defense would not have blown double digit leads 3 times at home there would not be the uproar over losing him. I believe in the long run the Broncos wont be hamstrung with a contract on an aging kicker when the defense needs help and they need to get younger. Also who would ever have said the Falcons got younger at the kicker position w/ a 38 y/o kicker?

Great post Guru
I agree 100% that it was time for Elam to move on.  We can't spend roster spots on kickers who can only kick FGs.  And the move is good for Elam (as you point out) because he gets the money that he deserves.

The aspect about Elam that I loved (and no one else seems to be mentioning) was that a fan gets a lot of confidence knowing that his kicker booted a 63 yard record tying FG.  I was never panicked if we were just outside of FG range.

I wish Elam well.  He did his job very well and he's a straight up guy.  But setting aside emotional value, letting Elam go was good business.

off topic
I noticed that this article spawned an american idol advertisement featuring David Archuleta...my first thought was "Did Guru mention Adam Archuleta in a kicking article?"

Actually it looks like the mention of "David" from david treadwell reaped this particular award.  Isn't there a better hot topic than idol for the word David?  Is this the best we can do?

kickers
let's see. karlis and treadwell? rich karlis missed, i believe, 2-3 field goals in the first half of the '86 super bowl against the giants, and later, on first and goal from the 5, we went for it 4 times and failed because we were trying to make up for it. the team was thoroughly deflated, and we got our butts handed to us in the second half. thank you, mr. karlis. david treadwell missed 3 field goals in the '92 afc championship game at buffalo, a game we lost by 3. this was our last shot with the early elway teams, wade phillip's defense was lights out, and we may have actually had a shot in that sb. this game got wade the head coaching job, but alas, our non-clutch kicker did us in, again. kickers are like lawyers, you hate 'em until you need 'em, and then you better have a good one-see new england and their dynasty, anyone remember matt bahr?... as far as 1997, bug bunny could have kicked for us, because we scored touchdowns. those days are over, and, like most teams, we need a clutch kicker to even make the playoffs. we don't have one, now. matt prater? this was a bad move(as was the myers fiasco), and our special teams may now be dead last in the league, overall. do we even have a punter, by the way? i just don't think you save money in this spot, it is too important, sometimes game-deciding. hopefully we'll draft some kickers this year, but this is just another example of special teams not being taking seriously enough, despite all the rhetoric. kick/punt returner, anyone? i didn't think so. scott o'brien, special teams guru? no

In reading
all these comments a thought occurred to me, Matt Prater could possibly be putting footballs through the uprights consistently at dove valley right now. Dude has a beast of a leg and he wasn't to bad when it came to placement on kickoffs. I understand it is a different kind of accuracy for kick offs than field goals, but don't you think dude should get his chance to prove he either sucks or is a beast? I mean he was on the roster with Elam so my guess would be like Rod Smith, Jason Elam talked to him about what it takes to make a kicker, worked with him because he realized that he wouldn't be there forever and helped him out. Here are the boys stats:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/stats?playerId=135826

I know how this looks but here are Jason's:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?statsId=2495

the 1st two seasons are comparable to one another, even if Prater's were in college (Jason is so stinkin old I couldn't find his college stats) Jason also played for Hawaii in college. Who is Hawaii's history have they played that they whipped the snot of or even had to use a field goal to win that was worth mentioning? Jason came from an iffy school and became great, Prater comes from a better school and looks to be cutting it up like Elam. You also have to account for a learning curve. There is no factory that kickers are made in and shipped to the NFL, they have to miss a few early to make them all later on in life. Simple math says a 1/2/3 yr kicker will never be as accurate as a 15 year kicker. Give the boy a chance thats all I'm saying

Elam's college stats
I don't know if the images are online anywhere, but you can find his stats in  the KUKA‘IAU Cave on Mauna Kea.

They are on the wall right before the hunter-gatherer section of paintings, among the "recreation" cave paintings.  He's not the one with the demon horns.  He's the one with the little halo and all the tick marks beneath him.  I believe the tick marks are his stats...
