Oh No, Not Again! Marcus Thomas Arrested For Suspicion Of Cocaine

Broncos fans will wake up Monday Morning and quickly learn that one of the players the team expects big things from in 2008 could be in a lot of trouble.  DT Marcus Thomas, the team's 4th round draft pick in last year's draft, a player that many believe had first round talent, was arrested in Florida early Saturday morning for "suspicion of possession of a controlled substance" and spent the night in jail.  Thomas, what was kicked of the Florida Gators team that eventually won the National Championship for, in large part, testing positive for marijuana multiple times. Officially, Thomas was kicked off the team for "failure to follow team rules" stemming from a trip home to Jacksonville, but the drugs played a large role in the situation getting to that point.

According to Thomas' agent, Richard Burnoski, Thomas received and passed a drug test upon his release.

"I don't think charges will be formally filed," Burnoski said Sunday night. "But the damage has been done. In the court of public opinion, this looks horrible. Marcus knows it. He has been very upset. He's depressed by this. He's embarrassed. He never wanted to let the Broncos down."

Burnoski said police found a trace amount of cocaine in the middle console of a car in which Thomas was the passenger.

Burnoski said Thomas, a Jacksonville native, was coming back to Denver and was having a going-away party.

"Marcus was drinking, but he did the right thing by getting a ride," Burnoski said. "He had no idea there was drugs in the car."

Burnoski said that Thomas took a drug test after his release and that it came back negative. Burnoski said the NFL and the Broncos will be sent the results of the test.

According to the report By Bill WIlliamson --

While a football player at Florida, Thomas sought treatment for drug use and passed almost 20 weekly tests leading up to the draft, He was considered a top-10 prospect but fell to the fourth round. The Broncos traded this year's third-round pick to Minnesota to select Thomas at No. 121 overall. He became a starter and was expected to be a major part of the Broncos' defense in 2008.

Thomas said several times last year that he had learned his lesson and didn't want to jeopardize his chances of NFL success.

"Honest to God, Marcus didn't know the cocaine was there," Burnoski said. "But because of the past, people will have a hard time believing him. But I do believe he will not be charged with this."

While Burnoski believes Thomas will not face charges, the Florida Times-Union has a different spin --
Denver Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas was arrested in Clay County and charged with possession of a controlled substance during a traffic stop early Saturday, according to Thomas' attorney and an Orange Park Police Department arrest log.

A full police report was not available at press time Sunday evening.

Thomas, 22, a former University of Florida and Mandarin High standout, was a passenger in the car, according to Charles Truncale, Thomas' attorney.

"He [Thomas] was in a vehicle in which a small plastic baggie containing what appeared to be a trace amount of cocaine was found. He [Thomas] did not possess it, nor did he have knowledge of it, until the stop of the vehicle. That's what happened. He is not guilty of the charge from which he has been arrested," Truncale told the Times-Union.

Truncale said both the driver and Thomas were arrested because police didn't know which man to charge.

Thomas recently finished his rookie season with the Broncos after being selected in the fourth round last April. He was suspended for most of his final season at Florida in 2006 after he had a positive drug test, then for violating curfew and drug rehabilitation class provisions of a contract he signed to remain with the team.

Thomas played in all 16 games for the Broncos in 2007 and had 20 tackles.

I am not one to give the benefit of the doubt, but I will use restraint this time.  All we know now is that Thomas was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over, and what appeared to be cocaine residue was found in a baggie in the center console.  Thomas then passed a drug test.  If those things are true, which I assume them to be, then Thomas is only guilty of them same thing he has been guilty of plenty in the past, hanging with the wrong types of friends.  Urban Meyer believed so greatly that it was Thomas' friends, not Thomas, that were the cause of his transgressions that he forbid Thomas from going home.

From all appearances, Thomas seems to be a good kid.  Let's hope his realizes, and FAST, that the NFL will not wait forever and he had best realize that these so-called friends are nothing but bad news.

I just hope we don't have a knee jerk...
I agree that as long as he passes the drug test, then we shouldn't cut him.

If Shanny just cuts the guy tomorrow because of the "zero room for error" thing, then we will be in worse shape than we are now.

That said, "WHAT THE F*** IS HE DOING BACK WITH THOSE IDIOTS!!!!!" Honestly he seems like a nice guy, but dude is a moron.

Orange County is hot. Really! Haven't you seen the weather report?

I agree with Guru
Let's let this play out before we make any judgements.

On the one hand, I appreciate the guy passing a drug test.  On the other hand, in some jobs you just can't get into a car with a friend who uses drugs.  It's not a matter of fairness, it's PR.

As a teacher, if I had been an innocent passenger in a car pulled over where drugs were found I would fully expect to lose my job.  "Appearance of evil" can be a factor in some jobs.

I could go either way on this one.  But I think the best thing to in a lot of these cases is to wait a few days to see what the coach says.  I trust Mike's judgement on these things.  He has gone to bat for guys (Henry) and booted guys, and showed wisdom in how he decided (in my opinion).  I imagine I'll support whatever Mike does and says on this one.

Whatever happens, someone needs to yank this kid into an office and give him some fear.  Better yet, maybe an older guy on the team should take this kid under his wing and "explain" how things need to be.  Sometimes a mentor can go a long ways towards saving a career or saving more important things.

polygraph?
If he passes the drug test, which the article seemed to suggest that he did, I have no problem believing he knew it was there. Who would carry a bag containing "trace amounts of cocaine" to a party (if he passes the test, it'll be pretty obvious that he wasn't using it), and then take it home with him in someone else's car?
I don't expect Shanahan to cut him as a knee jerk reaction. After Shanahan's lie detector stuff with Kircus and Henry last year, I wouldn't be suprised if Thomas gets offered a round with the polygraph.

This is junk
I know the guilt-by-association issue and think this was an incredibly stupid thing for him to do. Why is he even going back to Jax at all? Dude, move to CO and stay year-round.

That said, the police found a trace amount of coke in this little baggy inside someone else's car. That means they found the baggie and had to swab it to find anything in it. He didn't have any in him so it couldn't have been him.

The only thing he's guilty of here is stupidity.

Or so I'm told.

I am thanking my lucky stars...
The first paragraph had me freaked out, but to find out the dork wad who he got a ride home with is the coke head makes me feel alot better.

I see nothing but embarrassment for Marcus Thomas, hopefully he high tails it back to Denver and stays there for a year or two!!!!!!!!

It's time for Marcus.....
to lose the "friends" or "homies" because this could have been a lot worse.  Marcus, move on and leave the "friends" behind.

Half-joking, but
I keep waiting for the story about a Bronco being arrested for soliciting a prostitute.

That being said, these stories are tiresome. Everyone makes mistakes, but learning about Player X this week, Player Y three days later, and Player Z the next week . . . something is wrong.

He needs to get smarter, quickly
In the grand scheme of things this is not that big a deal, assuming the facts are as described by Thomas's side. If this was someone viewed as "high character" it would barely be a blip on the radar, but Thomas has to know that he is on a short leash and has to make sure that he is not even putting himself in potentially bad situations. He made a comment when he was drafted about knowing he had two and a half strikes against him (or something like that). I think he is lucky that he is a DT and the Broncos are desperately thin there. So this will probably end up being strike two and three quarters and not strike three (which would have been much more likely if Thomas was a different position, like RB)

The most important thing
is that the Broncos provide support for this kid.  This team is his new 'friend' and obviously he needs it very badly.  If Denver gets after him and chews him out and then leaves him on his own to sort it out, it won't end well.  He places a high regard on these old 'friendships' of his, so asking him to give them up will be a losing battle.

It would be much better if he could establish new friends in Denver, ones that didn't put him at risk with no regard for his career.  I think the organization is on this track, and that part of taking Stephen Harris in the draft year was to give Thomas a bit of familiarity with someone, to get over any issues about leaving Florida.  I'm sure Shanahan will address Marcus, but I hope he also thinks to keep Marcus close within the organization.   But the organization can't live his life for him.  The players need to reach out to him now, and I would love to see an article in the near future about how somebody, maybe DOOM or Moss took him in and wants to look out for him.  It doesn't have to be a veteran or a star, it just has to be a human being.  He needs that.

This isn't about the Bad Bronco.  This is about yet another person's life coming this close to being a meaningless collection of minutes hours and days, to be abused by others and never constructed into anything worthy of being called a human life.

As a Broncos fan, I'm sick of seeing it, and I haven't even seen it as much as some...

I wish my sig was as cool as mdierks!

Absolutely agree. Very well said.
He needs to get some offseason workout buddies, on the Broncos or elsewhere in the league, so that he won't be tempted to go back to hang out with his old friends.  Unfortunately, the Broncos don't have much in the way of veteran leadership on their D-Line at this point, especially with all the turnover last season.  Hopefully this year, the young core can come together and look out for one another, on and off the field.

Right on the money
I'd be willing to bet that was at least part of the reason for bringing back Eb.
Or so I'm told.
